Okay, this weeks lateness has no excuse. I forgot what day it is to be honest. anyway, better late than never! It's even later than i hoped thanks to the very slow upload rate of the two <200KB images... *sigh*
I am having no luck with the hosting of the photos on Farkin. I'll add them later. for now, enjoy!
This week i have Bazza up for display. he's got a crapload of posts but noone knows that much about him, i certainly don't, so here he is, in all his glory!
1. Who are you (name, bikes you ride, age, job)
Matthew Barron, Matty B, Barron, either or. Balfa 2step HD, Orbea 105’d roadie, beasty cruiser bike with mad sweet butterfly bars, 27 inch wheels and a nexus 8spd rear hub, 19 turning 20 in a couple of months (I expect gifts), run my own business (North Noise) as a tour/band promoter/organiser/whatever else you want to call it. I used to work at Toys R Us but quit, got a job with Anaconda in bikes there, still haven’t worked a shift yet hahah. I am also a full time Uni student studying Tourism Management and Marketing, I like to be kept busy haha.
2. When and why did you become a member of Farkin?
Back in the 03 days, I moved across from DNF because that started closing down and the answer was to move to Farkin so I did! I was on it mainly because of the trail information and chit chat but also to sell and buy parts for my bike! Does anyone remember my Kona Stinky?........Bazza’s big day of hucking anyone hhaha.
3. The inspiration for your user name was what exactly?
It was a high school senior thing and I was really stuck for a name so I just used this one! I wish there was a massive story behind it like the Queen forgot my name and just called me ‘Bazza’ instead or something.
4. Why are you still a member?
Good way to kill the time, pretty much spend 99.9% of my time these days in off topic and there are always good reads coming up (Don’t leave Johnny!)
5. What was your favourite ride of all time?
Probably my first run of Kuranda and finishing the run right down the bottom going WHOLEY CARP LETS GO AGAIN LETS GO AGAIN. Love that track so much.
6. 3 trails you must ride before you die:
Kuranda again
Spend several weeks over in France/checking out Europe
Last but not least probably riding somewhere people don’t usually expect like in India or Russia or even doing some XC miles through a wilderness reserve in Africa and riding beside Zebra’s and Elephants and avoiding getting eaten.
7. What is something about you that few people know?
There is a reason few people know these things!
8. What is the heaviest thing in your house?
That would probably be my 4 foot fish tank full of beautiful tropical fish (Angels, Gouramis, Clown Loaches, Bolivian Rams, a massive rock and at the moment a really bad algae outbreak!)
9. How did you come to own that thing?
Had a customer at work that I helped out a fair bit and he offered the whole lot to me at a damn good price so I bought it! Ended up still costing me around $500 to get all set up but was still a lot cheaper than what I could have paid!
10. What is the earliest you have woken yourself up to go for a ride?
Once woke up at 5am to go out for some downhill runs before it got hot! (Didn’t end up getting to the track till like 7-8 hahah) Done several 6am wake ups for road rides now though.
11. The latest you’ve been up riding?
Probably some of the old night rides we used to do, got home at like 11pm or so, but I have had some drunken rides in the early hours of the morning if they count!
12. Group rides, 2/3 people rides, or solo rides?
Solo road rides, downhill depends on what I want to get out of the ride and if it’s organised! Sometimes 2/3 people days are good for just chilling but other days its pretty rad to go out with a bunch of riders.
13. What’s the riding culture in your neck of the woods like?
Culture? Say what? There are several good people up here doing a really amazing job, the first big huge shout out would have to be to Mossie would does the most amazing job up here! Without him I think DH in Townsville would be long gone or XC for that matter as well. Paluma Push and RRR racers are always getting bigger as well as the annual Townsville to Cairns ride so the profile of riding in the area is only getting bigger and bigger. Andrew Roberts also deserves a mention, great track builder and rides like a maniac.
14. What does your other half think of mountain bikes?
Doesn’t matter what they think I will just call my bikes girl names just to make her jealous. Other halves are over-rated. Material possessions is where its at.
15. What does your boss think of mountain bikes?
I am my own boss! He thinks that I need to get better time management and employ cheap overseas immigrants to drive me up for shuttle runs of the local tracks.
16. What is on the desk you log onto Farkin from?
It’s so full of crap atm. Uni is going nuts! Lets start with the CD’s I have Parkway Drive – Killing with a smile, Punk o Rama 4, Limp Bizkit – Significant Other, Carpathian – Nothing to lose, Pro Team demo (mad good band) and about 20 others. 3 coffee cups, 3 glasses, one half full of red cordial with a dead fly in it. Devo toy, my He Man and the masters of the universe toys, uni books and text books everywhere as well. About 28480588 pens and box cutters and screwdrivers and other assorted bits and pieces and an empty tiny teddy packet.
17. You’re a promoter aren’t you? Care to explain what exactly you do?
It all started back about a year ago when a friend and his mum were getting bands up to do shows here and I enjoyed the bands a lot so I got into the promo side of things (posters, fliers, word of mouth stuff etc) while they did the organising. Eventually because of the job they were doing (crap and annoying the hell out of a lot of people) I took over more and more of the organising side and than they moved away from Townsville and I took over with Parkway Drive pretty much being the first gig I had major control of. After this I ditched the old name Townsville Mosh (long story behind that name, it’s basically a joke) and renamed it North Noise with some new aims and outlook on the future. As far as what I do is get in contact with either local bands or Australian bands (hopefully build a big enough base to attract internationals) and see if they are keen to travel up here to do shows. I usually have a look and ask around a fair few people (dodgy market analysis) to see if people are into this band. If the kids like them than I will develop a proposal incorporating overheads, cuts for local bands, cuts for North Noise and for the touring band. I mainly work on door deals and most bands are fine with this! Once I have the band locked in North Noise works very closely with the local PCYC here and I give them a call and book the venue for a date that the band are happy with and than I book the PA and all the extra bits and pieces and than start up the promo machine! Promotion will range from banners on fences in public areas, through to about 1200-1500 fliers that I hand out to kids at schools to hand out at their schools, to about 30-50 posters that I get local business to put up and plaster around the place (works well at Uni’s) than of course the old myspace gets used a fair bit as well! I also try as hard as I can without being intrusive to get kids word of mouth going and getting them to sike up their friends about coming to a show and hoping this continues and a good word of mouth system sets itself up. Than of course I have the gig, usually have the bands crash at my house which is pretty rad, put the show on and hope everyone has a mad good time!
18. The best bit and worst bit about being a Promoter is:
Best bit – Meeting and hanging with some of Australia’s biggest bands and watching kids go nuts, have mad times and walk away with a massive grin across their face.
Worst bit – Relying on people to get stuff done and it not happening!!!!
19. Last time you yelled at someone?
I yell at people a fair bit come to think of it, easiest way to get attention. Actually yelling at someone other than getting their attention was probably my little brother.
20. Last time someone yelled at you?
No one yells at me. Everyone lovessssssssssssssssss me.
21. Who would you like to see become a member of Farkin?
Grand Master Flash.
