At Mandy's request, here is a new thread about the Women's Weekend at Thredbo.
For those who aren't sure what it is, you can check out the website here: http://www.rawnrg.com.au/rawnrg/instruction.asp?a=8&secID=44&secname=Women%27s+Camps&callcontentID=81
It's a training camp over one weekend, usually in March where girls can buff up their skills!!! Maybe some of the chicks that have been before can shed some more light about their experience at Thredbo!!
I've never been, but boy am I hanging out for it!! So I will definately be there! I'm just hanging out for the dates to be released so I can take some time off work around that weekend (probably after the weekend... to lick my wounds... ;) )
So who's thinking of going?
roxy12

ive been told its march 11-12, in which case i should come up... maybe drag a friend up
ah my bad there 2006 dates, so i gues itl be roughly that anyway
Mandy

Consider me there!!!! Do they get heaps of people or is it fairly small????
TerraNik

Yeah I assumed it would be either that weekend (10th/11th), or the one after (17th/18th), because otherwise it would clash with the Oceania Championships at Thredbo.
roxy12

so did anyone know roughly figures that they usualy get?
14 in the first year, 4 in the second year, not sure about this year's.

Fi, girls, was the person who set up the Womens Weekend in the first place and ran it. :D
Here's the thread about last year's event, if it helps http://forums.farkin.net/showthread.php?t=48377. As far as I know, Stacey (who I believe is on the mtb-oz-chix list) will be running the chix stuff next year, so if you're interested then I would suggest letting let her know early so they can hopefully pull off a well organised, successful weekend. I guess you can contact her through the Raw NRG site.

I emailed the NRG website about 2ish weeks ago to try and sus out when they would be holding the weekend.. but I never got a reply. :(

Actually Fi, according to Stacey, she is leaving for North America in the next few weeks for 1 year, so I don't know who will be running the show. TerraNik, you probably haven't heard from RawNRG as Colin Battersby has been away on hols. I too have been trying to get in contact with him so will try again tomorrow. Keep trying. :)

so whats the deal with the weekend? do you have to be a pro to go or is it more beginer style?

It's aimed at any women at any level... including beginners. I think they just say that off-road riding experience would be beneficial, but other than that it's open to anyone! I think someone mentioned before that there was a lady that had hardly ever ridden a bike before and she went to the weekend and did fine!

Put it this way...... My first ever mountain bike ride was doing downhill at Thredbo with Fi as my instructress. No joke if I can do it with no experience then anyone can. Sure on the black run I get off and walk sections that I am not sure of or that are very wet, like snakes and ladders, but otherwise I ride the rest.

Default RawNRG Women's weekend
Hi,
Thought i'd better send this as a PM and keep my male presence from tainting the chick's forum!
I worked as a RawNRG Instructor up until the end of the 05 season. The "Learn to Air" jump and drop session for the 05 women's weekend was to be led by myself, however got rained out - due to the overall bad weather, we had a limited group of around 6. In previous years (with better conditions) the weekend has attracted over a dozen female participant

Default Re: RawNRG Women's weekend
This really comes down to the average skill level of the whole group. Obviously the guides will plan to keep everyone happy and boredom to a minimum, however extremes of either end of the skill spectrum make this more of a challenge, especially with smaller numbers of participants.
With the small group in 05, my lesson plan ranged from basic jumping to advanced midair control/landing and tricks. I could really only narrow things down after seeing the ability of the group for myself.
Inevitably most riders will have different forte's in terms of different aspects of riding, but it's a safe bet that the team at RawNRG will do their best to ascertain the skills of women as they register for the weekend, and plan activities and clinics accordingly.
The best thing to do would be encourage as many women as possible to come down for the weekend and make the activities as fun and satisfying for everyone.
Contact RawNRG directly for definitive answers closer to the planned date.

Bethany

if i go ill have room for another person and bike if it helps.
Im kinda bit scared of signing up. Never riden real downhill, dont know anyone going...

I will definately be going and definately wanting to hitch a ride with someone. Ill go halves in petrol too. So if you do have a spare spot let me know. It will be good to as i dont know anyone so the drive there is a great chance to get to know another mtber girl :)

*feels a rode trip coming on!!!!* Unfortunately though I had a think about it and realised that we wouldn't have enough room for another person. It'll be pushing it with 3 of us already with our bikes!!
Maybe before Thredbo us Sydney girls should meet up for a ride to get to know each other. It'd certainly make Thredbo have a more relaxed atmosphere if we have met each other before!!

You don't need a DH bike to ride at Thredbo. Yeah, it's going to make things a little easier but the track is totally doable on a hardtail. In fact for a weekend like this a hardtail is a great idea as it will make you think about your riding more and you will most likely get more from the sessions.
thanks Dougy. are you one of the instructors at thredbo?
bringing hardtail sounds good though the bike is not the best. its got one of those plastic rst forks
perhaps if it breaks then i will hire a bike and won't have to carry anything back to brisbane  but never ridden a dh bike so probably couldn't control it as well - they are probably 10x as heavy too.

Trust me, at 6 or so minutes on the dh at Thredbo, hardtail is a very hard slog there. It might be worth it to hire a full suspension bike for the weekend and for your own sanity. :D
Dougy

The RST forks probably wouldn't be the best as the track does tend to be hard on lower end gear.

Hiring a DH bike would be a good idea but if it came down to "if I have to hire a bike I can't afford to go" then I'd just stick to what you have. The course isn't usually a full-on DH race deal where you are punching out full runs down the Cannonball it is more about skills and bike handling so everything is done in sections. If things are tight you could always bring your bike and just hire for a day or so just to have a go.

Inko, your bike weighs not much less then my Trance 2, the one I rode the other day. It is a XC duelie, but it handles me throwing it around just fine. I swapped from a Hardtail over to it with no worries. I reckon you would be fine after seeing you ride. If they are set up properly for your wieght then theres no prob. Remind me next time we go riding and you can have a tool around on mine.

Um, you could fly to Sydney, and then fly to Canberra... (I don't think you can fly directly to Canberra from NZ). Then, it is about 2.5 hours drive from Canberra to Thredbo, but there are coaches like this one (http://www.mountainpass.com.au/Home.html) that you can go on, if you don't want to hire a car. Or, you could hitch a lift with one of us girls leaving from Sydney if anyone has any room!!!
Bethany

has anyone actually payed for it yet?
oh and yakinaway itd be best to catch a lift with someone or get a direct flight cause the coach up there is heaps expensive and the flight to canberra wouldnt be much better... I could maybe take you... Kinda depends cause im takin Mandy so thats already 2 bikes and gear.

Check out Virgin ... I think they have a 32kg max per piece of sporting equipment, and your bike counts for 5kg of your total 20kg. Although the Bullet would be fine for Thredbo, good for trail riding there too.

Hi All,
I've been to the last 2 women's weekends at Thredders and they are great fun.
It's supposed to be for all skills but I found that they mostly cater for the beginner. The second year around I spent most of the time with one other girl who was exactly at my level and we left the group quite a bit. Both years there have been a couple of girls that really had no riding exp off road and they ended up giving up after the first run.
All in all though it's a great weekend and you really get a chance to improve your skills which is always a good thing!!!

Hey girls
Im totally into a girls weekend of riding. Chix are usually super supportive of each other and it make for a cool day out on the hill.
But i've been riding for like 8 years, do a bit of DH racing and do alright; but my jumping really lets me down - so that i what I'd be looking for in this weekend - is to get some jumping skills.
It feels like this weekend may not be 100% for me - considering I live in Melb and have to haul my arse all the way to Thredbo for it...
Thoughts from anyone who has done it before? Instructors?

I have never been - this will be my first time - but on their website (http://www.rawnrg.com.au/rawnrg.net/instruction.aspx?a=8&s=44&c=81) it says it's for riders of all skills. This is what they say,
"For the more experienced riders, including those who have already ridden the Cannonball, this is a perfect chance to learn new skills and improve your existing ones in a non-competitive environment. The Terrain Park, Fun Box & Wall Ride offer challenges to riders of all levels and are the perfect place to improve your drops, get an introduction to jumping, and test your balance all under the expert instruction of Raw NRG staff"
So by the sounds of things you would get a chance to improve your skills in jumping... But I'm just going off what their website says.
Maybe Fi can shed some light?

Sorry, I haven't been involved in this since the first one in 2004. What I would suggest is that you ring Raw NRG, get the name of the person who is coordinating the weekend and speak to them directly about how the weekend will be structured. Let them know what you want to get out of the weekend. In the first year, I asked ppl to fill out a form prior to the weekend outlining what they wanted to learn/achieve. I don't know if they are still doing that - but I think it's important for the coordinator/instructors to know what your expectations for the weekend are and they can then structure the weekend accordingly.
Look forward to hearing how it goes!

Thredbo evacuated in face of fire

ONE of the nation's top ski resorts is being evacuated because it is under threat from an approaching bushfire.
The Hermit Mountain fire has more than doubled its size in 24 hours and Rural Fire Service and NSW National Parks and Wildlife crews are preparing for it to approach Thredbo by nightfall.
“The fire is approximately 12km from Thredbo now, but if weather continued as expected it will be 6km from Thredbo by nightfall,” Ailish Pope, an RFF and Incident Management Team spokeswoman, said.
“We have trigger points in place to relocate staff if need be.”
All visitors have been told to leave the ski resort, which straddles the NSW-Victoria border.
The fire was sparked by lightning on Friday and was burning in inaccessible terrain.
“The fire has burnt about 1400ha on the Victorian side of the border and about 3200ha on the New South Wales side,” Ms Pope said.
“Fire crews are being supported by 6 aircrafts including an air crane.
“The NSW Fire Brigade is also on standby to provide assistance if we need it.”
Susie Diver, Thredbo resort spokesperson, said 700 to 1000 visitors had been evacuated as a precaution and staff had been told to wet down all surfaces.
"The next two days will be telling," Ms Diver said.
The Alpine Way is now closed to all traffic aside from residents and emergency personnel.
The Kosciusko National Park and the Geehi and Swampy Creek Campsites have also been closed for public safety.

Fires quelled by torrential rain - Thredbo re-opens!!
We've just been informed that the National Parks and Wildlife Service will re-open the KNP from 11am this morning - great news!
We anticipate that chairlifted mountain biking will begin again after the current weather system passes through - probably Tuesday morning. Stay tuned and we'll keep you posted.
Once again thank you to all of our friends who contacted us over the last few days!

hey bken barbie where in Nz are u Im NZ based.....
in dunedin but travel to wanaka, queenstown nasbey and the north island riding
heya I been all over NZ but am back home in Aus now; just realised the dates for the women's weekend are super awkward (between Nationals and a familiy holiday) - looks so unlikely that i can make it now. boo hoo.
we started in ch-ch and then went to wanaka, queenstown, nelson, wellington, rotorua and woodhill. WOuld have been so good to have both and XC bike and a Dh bike was there was so many cool things to ride on a BIG bike but had to suffice with just the little XC bike for this trip.
Have a RAD time up in thredders. Travelling with your bikes is such a great way to spend your days. having chairlift access for riding is even better! Gauranteed to put a smile on your face.

Yeah there's quite a few XC trails, actually outnumbering the lone DH track!! Some of the girls went and did an XC trail or two during the weekend.
