Gday folks,

I bought a odysee evolver with kool stops and they are good brakes, but they are lacking that extra bit of stopping power im looking for (or used to on my other bikes), so i was wondering what peoples thoughts were on if i was to use a grind on the rim? or if there are any other things i can do to improve stopping power? The brakes are set up well, as well as they can be i guess, on an Alex DM24 rim.

Any ideas?

I wouldn't
If you have the money, go a chrome rim, also you can use liquids on your rim that grip heaps well such as "Simple green"

chrome rim definately, make sure rim and pads are completely clean, everything is aligned properly etc.

as for putting stuff on your rims, i recommend simple green. its a sort of household cleaner thingo.sometimes hard to get but well worth it(pretty sure bunnings stocks it).

Also, clean your rims with windex. gets em super clean and might add in braking power.

if all else fails put coke on your rims;)

what lever and cable are you using?

you might just have to wear the pads in.
its annoying but this may be the case.

dont put shit all over your rims, that just make it work for a few minutes, then you got all shit you need to clean up after.

at the moment im brakeless coz my brakes were annoying me (same as yours), and i was running them on just a grey alloy rim like you got. i used to have chrome which worked so well, but this was good enough, like you can still fufanu etc on them.

easiest way though, is invest in a chrome rim. but go for a decent chrome rim, one that has good hard chrome. like odyssey hazards etc. but even something like a rhynolite will still do.

I'd be steering clear of odyssey parts if I was you. They used to be a very good company, but lately everything from them has been of shit quality.

I bought a hazard wheel, the chrome had come off after 1 day, got it warrentied, the new rim lasted a month.

Dont bother with grinding, not only does it weaken the rim but depending on what pads you're running you can make the brakes worse.
Chrome rims for sure, anything else just becomes a dust magnet glazing your pads and screwing with your brakes.
Use as little spring tension as possible.
Have pads alligned flat, i have found toe-in/toe-out doesn't help, it may make the brakes modulate better but modulation is learnt, and also your brakes feel different when your going backwards (ei. fakies, tail taps etc).
Have the straddle cable as straight as you can get it, or you get squishy lever feel.
Boil your pads if you wish. lol.

As for odyssey parts being shit, how can you judge their other things based on one of their products?

yes, odyssey all parts are shit. so shit that they back items like forks/bars/crank arms with a lifetime warrenty

Rims? ok, everyone I know who has bought odyssey rims lately, the chrome has rubbed off very quickly.

Cranks only have warrenty on the arms. The forks are ok.

The newer stems all froze up or slipped.

The tyres, I know alot of people who have had their tyres come off the rim when berming.

Pedals? hahaha unsealed jcs die after a few hours use.

That is alot of their line fucked, most of the products that fuck up don't have good warrenty.

Odyssey is good for its warrenty, and they used to be awesome for their parts. But they are slack lately.

And to all you people who have been riding bmx for what a month or something, and think you are godlike and that odyssey is the best because its the most mainstream brand, fuck off and get a clue.

It shows in their attitude first and foremost. This guy obviously lives with at least 3 soapy fingers implanted knuckle deep in his arse. He has a voice that sounds like a set of bagpipes getting run over by a Mazda rotary and I swear I can hear it when I read his posts. When people like this appear, I just ask a few people who know them and it's imediately confirmed..., most of his "mates" don't like him either because he has such a big and stupid mouth!

Plus, Odyssey farkin ROCK!

You should be able to get evolvers to work pretty rad...

Get a good, linear cable. fill the outer with silicone spray.

Get some koolstop pads, boil them and use a file to rough up the pad surface.

Dial in the arms with an equal amount of spring tension.

Chrome rims. Clean them with a solvent (windex, simple green etc etc etc).

Should be working far better after that.

With brand new koolstop eagle claw pads, soak them in boiling water for 5mins. This will get rid of any oil in the rubber. Then get some sand paper and make the pads level. This means sanding the 'clawed' in end so that it is level with the rest of the pad.

Align your pads and make sure that both pads are equally distace of the rim. You can do this by playing around with the spring tension on your brake arms.

Have fun
Mark

P.S Dont use simple green with koolstop pads it will f**k them up!!!!! You can use windex on your rim to clean the surface. Best option is to get a chrome rim or one of the new black odyssey duralectra rims. (black rim with hard braking surface like a chrome rim)

Bullshit!...haha such crap!

And as for cleaning rims dont use anything...but paper and a bit of pressure...just clean pads with paper or ruff them up with abrasive paper! chrome rims..work a shit load better and you can tell this when they honk! by that i mean when you ride and tap your brake they blurt out a awsome attention seeking sound! also if you dont want a chrome rim try a Dual Electra..as the paint will never come off..well at least not for a while!

Cheers for all the advice and ideas guys, duly noted!

But, ive gone the tight ass route and used a nice light grind on the rim, and the pads are holding up fine and the stopping power has increased by heaps. Recommend it to anyone that likes a nice back brake that works when you want it to!!

try cleaning your rim and pads with dettol it disinfects them and makes them insanley clean and it dries sticky so it makes the brake work so well my pads stick to my rim if i hold it in and let it go when im stationary but not when im ridinbg

Like everyone has said, just give them a good clean, and as I said before, if you need them even stronger use simple green etc. Are you keeping the rim you grinded or getting a new one?

Also, Melbourne Rider, I thought you hated mtbs (as you said on ozscene) so why are you on here?

Simple green is like an all purpose cleaner, comes in a spray bottle (just like windex). Makes brakes insane.
I got my fix from Bunnings Warehouse.
I use a little bit of it on my rims occasionally it just gives the brakes that little bit of oomph, but as wookie said, i believe it fucks up some pads.

After hearing many rumours I tried the coke-on-rim theory. I found that it made the brakes AWESOME for a 1 - 2 hour session then it wore off. So I put some more on. Process repeats, I have good brakes, I am happy and I get to drink lots of Coke. Sugar-high increases my awareness and makes me more alert, riding style improves. Over-excited state of mind results in approaching and meeting new riders and making new friends. New friends fun to ride with and also like drinking coke too.

okay so the last 3/4 was a little exaggerated. But I definately recommend trying the Coke theory.. nothing to lose!

well i agree with everything other then coke, havent tried and never will
windex is a winner for me, tried stainless polisher, didnt work. i then tried windex and bamm good breaking instantly
