i think it was donkay that said something about how trials riders are very 'different' to other riders in another thread.
the truth is that it is a pretty different style of riding and i've found its not real popular making it hard to discover and/or take up as a sport.
Anyways what im interested in is how all you guys got into trials? how did u discover this awesome sport?
hope to hear some good stories...

I started out after seeing a mate do some little pedal kicks, and that same night seeing a story on Talon Weaving (Ex aus trials champ i think????) on tele and thought, "shit yeah, that looks awesome" and went to get a bike about a week after that.
Also, the internet was a huge help once i knew what i was looking for, and its here where i met alot of more experienced riders to hook up with and soak up all their knowledge.
Talon Weaving ey? Might even be a relation to someone on this board... maybe. ;)
I used to ride my BMX up and down a drainage ditch when I was a kid, and I would try to ride over rocks and logs and stuff all without putting my feet down. At that stage I didnt even know Moto trials existed, I was just doing it for fun.
Then when I was about 20 or so, I saw/remembered/took notice of moto trials and thought, hey, why dont they do that on pushies?
I got the internet a year or two after and discovered that they already did it on pushies and it went from there. I remember calling Paul Gerloff to ask advice because his was the only Aussie trials site out there.
Wow, I guess I type too much.

i used to ride MTB with these guys joe brewer and jake and then one day they both went and bought these things called trials bikes and i thought thats cool and then i kept riding MTB for about 4 years and then couple of years ago i saw them riding again and though damn theyve got bloody good maybe ill start and now im back riding with them again. top shit though
i used to be all about street ridin, but then i started doing more tech stuff on the street and i think Drop In has helped influence me a lot, especially season 4
Props to Shawn Denny for influencing me to ride trials!

I was racing XC for ages until I was 18. Then I moved to Sydney where there isn't that much accesible riding and was looking for something I could just walk out the front door and do.
I think that's the thing I like most about trials. Even at the level I am riding now I can still stuff around on a curb or a little wall for a while and learn stuff and get better. I don't need to drive out to the bush or have a skate park near by to ride.
Plus the guys that ride seem to always be really nice people. That kinda drew me to it aswell. I find that other MTB disciplines have a load of idiot posers amongst the seriously good riders that kinda detracts from the whole getting out and just having fun riding bikes idea. You don't get that with trials.
Get a trials bike, you'll love it :D
I think the defining moment for me was seeing Ryan Leech in the Kranked 3 premiere at the Metro theatre in Sydney, it just looked so extreme!
I think once you get some of the basics down in trials it becomes so addictive.

I used to ride freestyle BMX for about 5 years until I broke my wrist and then heel in quick succession. I had always liked the tricks/technical side of riding more than racing and when my LBS had one of the first Raceline Rhino mods which was heavily discounted because no-one knew wtf it was for I bought it on a whim and haven't looked back since.
Once you get to a certain skill level everything opens up infront of you and all these objects that you never noticed before look like something that has to be ridden on....

I had been doing a little bit of trials on my MTB for a while and watching vids of Ryan Leech, the Martyns and Hans Rey but I decided to get into trials properly after seeing Ryan Leech doing demos in Vancouver. Came home and ordered myself a Norco Team Trials and started riding more.

im not sure if i can be classed as a trials rider.but when i first got into riding i saw a dude,von'v-dub'williams doing it on third down,by thor wixom.i was like  .so i jumped on my $400 bike at that time an tryed hoping around,i failed misserabley.as i got more into riding i then saw ryan leech and hans ray doing it.by this time my bro had bought a duallie for dh so thats what we got into.he had 1 finger breaking so the first thing i did was a back wheel bunny hop.i was stocked.at the start of thi year i got my first legit bike, all to my self, which yes, just happened to be a stp zero.i had also owned manifesto and was ditermind to be able to pedal kick across my back yard.with so many times trying i finally accomplished it.now when im not dh and just want to much around i go tail tap stuff and do bunny hops to the front wheel and bounce every where.so fun.im happy i accomplished my goal :D

some nice stories here guys! i've just bought my first trials bike off ebay, an Onza T-pro. it was $550 which i thought was a bargain but im still kicking myself for missing out on getting an Onza T-mag (he claimed it was the only one in oz) for $600. so looks like i have a lot of learning to do...and come to think of it, i dont have a bloody clue how i've ended up with a trials bike! i know its what i want though...

Well for me
I did a fair bit of regular riding when i was young, i then noticed my brother practicing trials alot, with backhops, kicking and such. But this was on his regular mtb, many parts on that Nishiki bike broke so he had to replace it soo many times. He then bought himself a Rhino 20" and yeah, i sometimes took that bike out when he wasn't around and learnt how to backhop watched his vids of 'Revolution' and got into it.
Pretty much, I just thought to myself "gee that looks different and pretty cool, i'm gonna try that"

I got into it through my housemate Jase. He rides just about anything including DH. We went out to the park for a ride (me on a massive XC Trek) and to my surprise he started jumping his bike all over the place. It looked so controlled. I loved it straight away and started looking for the right bike.
I went in headfirst and bought a Kona DJ bike and modified it for trials and XC. It is pretty indestructable.
I am still learning and havent passed the 6 month mark. I am still picking things up quickly enough. Understanding the techniques can be hard unless you can see someone do tricks.
Its completely addictive. I notice sometimes when I drive over a speed bump I pull up on the steering wheel like I could manual the frigging car!

Nice to read some storys of other dudes riding trials in Aus! I am so itching to meet some other enthusiastic trials riders...
About two years ago I started trying to do pedal hops out the back alley of my work on my lunch breaks on my cross country giant mtb, and kept on doing jumps and the odd bit of trials style rding till I broke the frame and wanted somethin stronger, so I bought a norco 4hun for the strength.. (Not having any idea what a trials specific bike was)! Bad mistake that was! Two pedal kicks on the 4TUN and I was rooted!
I was a little sceptical about getting a bike with ridgid forks for street oriented trials, but thought I would give it a go anyway and bought a mongoose trials bike and loved ridgid feel. Riding still progressing I thought it was time to upgrade my ride and now ride an onza woodstock which is just awesome!
I feel like a fair outcast riding trials in Bundaberg as for the last couple years I have had the only trials specific bike in town that I know of and one other bloke has just bought the mongoose frame from me and has gone on a couple of trials rides with me since, but no one else here seems to know what trials is all about!

It would be great if you guys from Bundaberg could make a road trip down to the Brisbane/ Gold Coast area for one of our comps. We have sections for every level of rider and fun is had by all :)
You can find out more about the club at http://www.expressivebikes.com/bbtc/bbtc.html
There is a forum as well.

OK... how can I put this nicely?
Meelo, ALL your posts are absolute crap with little more than one-liners adding nothing to the threads you're replying to and written in MSN/SMS abreviations.
And for the love of God do you even think before you type something? I mean, what the hell is this?
