Just some chick who's on the site...
I thought it would be good timing since we just had the new "Gils only" section installed.
Sorry about it being a day late, I'm on holidays so give me a break!

1. Who are you (name, bikes you ride, age, job)
Im Kristina Shiel, just gone 19. I’m currently riding a morewood izimu and dobermann pinscher, still have my first huffy 24” mountain bike out back!
When I do work, which seems to be very rarely lately, im a disability/aged/frail carer, currently looking into a permanent career with Yooralla.
2. When and why did you become a member of Farkin?
Ahhh your asking a big one there, it was last September I believe, just after I finished uni, had been at work (bike store chain) and seen my boss who happened to be a down hiller selling stuff on the site, so thought id check it out. Unfortunately I went to Farkin.com first. I quickly erased that mistake ;). I believe I joined up that day because I couldn’t view pictures of people riding without signing in and not knowing a lot about DH or anything on that side of riding, pictures seemed to be the best place to try and figure out what the boys at work were on about!
3. The inspiration for your user name was what exactly?
Hahaha no inspiration, my dogs names roxy and my favourite numbers 12, needed something I could remember as I didn’t think id be visiting to often, boy was I wrong!
4. Why are you still a member?
I barely work and have no life outside of bikes? Partly, but it’s also funny to listen to some of the crap guys just say sometimes, amuses me. Plus im addicted to information, I love hearing about the good and bad about new products.
5. What was your favourite ride of all time?
Haha um your asking the wrong person here really, after my first race (nov 25th 05) I turned my hand to a metal factory and couldn’t ride for 4 months, I didn’t even get to go to Buller! But out of the 8ish different tracks ive been to down here (bring on the nationals!) I’d have to say best dh track to be Barjarg and Eildon, and my favourite xc ride way back in my lycra days, was a random trip with 4 boys were we got completely lost in Bunyip state forest, was awesome took us 4 hours to get out! Came across heaps of different types of obstacles id never tried!
6. 3 trails you must ride before you die:
My friend who actually introduced me to my first dh ride is over at whistler at the moment and the way she talks about it makes me so jealous, so id say there as one. Id love to adventure through cairns just see what’s there and as im still so inexperienced il leave the last as my open spot to be filled by which ever track tantalizes my taste buds!...........but I really do want to ride Buller, I feel like the only person down here who hasn’t…..
7. What is something about you that few people know?
I’m dyslexic, I have mild autism, ah I was a national xc runner, not because I liked running, I hated it I just wanted to get out of class.
New development, Im an xxiv team rider now!
And just because I ride doesn’t mean Im a lesbian damn it!
8. What is the earliest you have woken yourself up to go for a ride?
Mmm ahh back in 02 I got up at 6:30 to ride to Philip Island on the bike tour ? I’m not a morning person.
9. The latest you’ve been up riding?
Haha I used to go to random rides while I was going through some sleeping issues, used to just go out at 3am and mess about. No I didn’t get up! I hadn’t been to sleep!
10. Group rides, 2/3 people rides, or solo rides?
It depends what it is, sometimes I like to get out and go solo, just take in the surroundings, just time to think.
However when it comes to DH theirs nothing more I like then being out with a group of boys and threatening there man hood! Makes them feel a bit insecure…. Just for fun;)
11. What’s the riding culture in your neck of the woods like?
Well it’s a culture in the woods……. Or so the Robin Hood re inactors said as they were running around screaming with swords in a local forest were we were track building!
Were I live exactly there’s basically nothing but the surrounding areas are pretty cool, alota kids on stps….. Nice illegal DH track 10 minutes away that attracts a lot of people. Everybody wether they know each other or not are usually very social and helping, like most DH scenes I guess? Other wise there’s isn’t much about where I live, we don’t even get old hybrid riders here? Wait we gets lots and lots of roadies on Sunday! But they don’t talk back………
12. What does your other half think of mountain bikes?
Well he says he doesn’t think……haha nah hes an “elite” or so he claims rider…but even if he objected I wouldn’t listen….No victorias favourite rider Josh Lansdown is very supportive, constant winging about doing xc riding (he calls it training)! He just doesn’t shut up!
13. What does your boss think of mountain bikes?
Boss what’s a boss? My Last “full time” job thought it was great, they also thought I was insane but I guess that comes with the territory.
http://forums.farkin.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=47557&stc=1&d=1159868853
14. What is on the desk you log onto Farkin from?
Wow were do you want to start?! Left to right Phonebooks, answering machine, fax machine, newspapers! ashtray (not mine), stapler, lots of papers, speakers, dictionary, camera, boost chockie bar wrapper, more books, printer, another ashtray, 2 boxes of books oh and a credit card.
15. What’s it like being one of maybe a dozen female Farkers?
There’s a dozen! It’s been good talking to a few of those girls on msn lately.
Um it was intimidating in the beginning but now I just give guys crap.
Ah my msn contact list tripled when I joined firkin, most very nice people with the few well I think you can guess what I mean there.
I like to think that just being here can help with the further encouragement of female riding even if it is minor.
18. What do you think needs to be done to get more females involved in MTBing?
More publicity. This girl’s only forum has been great itself bringing out female members I hadn’t even noticed before. It really gives a voice and is a real sign of encouragement for female riders.
Personally I’ve found with the average dh race in Victoria there have been on average 3 female riders, only being by myself at 1/7 races ive done since I started down hilling a year ago. Which isn’t bad considering, but it isn’t good.
What I plan to do within Victoria even if it only attracts 4-6 female riders is start women’s dh days here, just make the female dh population more noticeable and just to add that feeling of support.
My first dh race was my third downhill ride altogether, and I know or me it was one of the most intimidating experiences I’ve been in, not knowing anyone, and being leered at by big bad guys…..ok there not so bad but you don’t know that first! But that’s just half the point my first race (club race) I was only helped out by one guy, who wasn’t a club member at all, I had no idea what was going on or how things worked, the club member who even signed me up gave me bugger all help. In the end another female rider pointed me in the right direction.
I believe a women’s ride day prior to this to introduce the processes and general running as well as actually having someone to direct any questions I had to would have been fantastic. A lot of women aren’t going to want to throw themselves into a race like I did. My aim is to try and build up the awareness of women in down hill. There are plenty of ride days for xc so I figure why not give it a shot?
16. Last time you got approached by the police?
Ah 4 months ago, I gout randomly pulled over for a roadworthy, I got done for a small stone shipped headlight, one parker (during the day), and one p plate. I think he was having a bad day.:(
17. Last time you yelled at someone?
Last night, yelled at my boyfriend and my dad for trying to help me in my "what do I do now my cars blown up situation"! How dare they help! Haha women do silly things….I can’t explain it
18. Last time someone yelled at you?
Hhahaa ah I fell asleep in ah what you might call trade school one day, I woke up facing the widow, and there was this little white fluffy dog with a puffy tail! I couldn’t help it, I just had to tell everyone, I didn’t realise they were in the middle of a conversation about palliative care(dieing patients)…… it went something along the lines of
Blah blah blah.SHORT ATTENTION SPAN blah blah blah TAKE CLASS SERIOUSLY blah blah blah. They felt bad when they found out why I was falling asleep for no reason…. I was actually passing out haha
Mum yells at me all the time, but that doesn’t count.
19. Who would you like to see become a member of Farkin?
I’m going to go with Greg Minaar haha um because ive had Honda is awesome drilled into my head by an old man asleep on the couch, and because hes hot!
Thanks Kristina!
