Ride a hardtail, and get some new forks.

you need heavier springs (or a new fork).

Riding smoother? Stay loose, use your body to absorb impacts, look 10m ahead of you, not down at your wheel. umm someone else might have some better tips....

To be smoother, you gotta look for the lines.. know what line you are going to take the whole way down the coarse. Don't force the bike to do something.. rather guide the bike and work with it. Look up tips on proper technique in cornering and think about how you can concerve energy at each section. Let your body be and extra 7inches of shock. To be smooth is all about concerving energy.

Dude ride a hardtail for a few weeks then go back to yourbig beast. You'll be amazed at the difference.

Yeah I rode a ridgid for a month ... ive been riding a HT for the last year .. mostly DH and jumping .. Tonight ... Yes tonight .. I will be picking up my new frame .. an 03 Kona Stinky..

So hopefully i am still able to ride ok ... but ill let ya know that riding a hardtail will help you out. although .. you probably dont want to spend money on buying a hardtail... try going over sections over your favourite track .. prace the 1 section .. trying each time to get around that corner faster .. how to use your weight to throw the bike into corners .. how to manual into rock gardens and then pedal out mid manual .. that kinda sheet.

practice is all it is. - *dom looks at himself and thinks .. i should take some of my own advice haha get smoother*

ride a hard tail on every dh track you have every ridden . for a month or so and the ride your brains out on your dh bike on every thing.but when you get back from your ht ride sit on the dh bike so it still feels normal.

or buy a dmr ryitham 24' and start racing bmx every now and then. you'll get well smoothed out.

Study Zen, Take up Tai Chi I hear it makes you real smooth. Also makes you real slow too. It's a trade off super smooth and slow or wragged and super fast.

yeah, what they said.

A hardtail will make you search for much smoother lines. Youll find yourself beside the worn line and steering clear of braking bumps and stuff.

Also look for transitions to land into on jumps, it will smooth out the landings if you dont already do it. Ive got a hardtail and i find myself on the backwheel alot, pumping ruts and manualing over stuff, it helps heaps too.

Try to keep your speed on corners, sometimes a little more speed can smooth out a track a little.

Hope that helps a little, ill try to think of some other stuff

Concentrate on being smooth, not fast. Go slow and speed and smoothness will naturally come.

Riding around the rough lines on a hardtail definitly wont make you smother or faster. How can you learn to ride rough stuff when all you're doing is riding around the rough fast lines. You'd be very surprised at what you can ride through and over on a hardtail. Just pick the same lines you would on your bouncy bike and practice. Do that for a few weeks then go back to your other bike. You wont believe how smooth your riding.

i reckon waxing is deffinitely the way to go for smoothness, it dosen't have the bad regrowth that shaving can bring.

learn to ride.

yeah i have to agree with lindsay.

most professional downhillers have had experience in BMX racing and slalom which has given them the skills and smoothness that they use on their duallies. it pays off to do the hard time. ht's will improve your spontaneous thinking on the track. its all about being able to think quick and smart. if you can do that your riding improves regardless of how physically fit you are. duallies kinda give you a subconcience that you dont have to be aware of anything on the track because you can simply ride over it. (that is only if you go straight onto duallies)

trust us HT'ers on this one...

fastrider gus

yea.. fark duallies man.. im keeping my HT. its workin well and im busting bigger than the majority of duallies around.. so ill stick with the HT..

gus imagine the stuff you could do on a duly. if you can do 25ft drops on a ht than you could do twice as bigger stuff on a duly

Not necessarily, with 99% of people it's fear holding them back, not skill. Making something easier for someone won't necessarily make them less scared; Gus may be capable of landing even giganticer stuff on a duallie but if he's scared of going any bigger than he currently does on his ht (not saying he is, just a hypothetical situation) then a duallie may not help at all.

Besides, duallies break easily.

I reckon build a full rigid. I am doing that now just for a thrash bike. I am not real fast though, so can't comment too much. But when you ride rigid you learn smoooove, you also learn PAINFULL HANDS at the bottom of trails. Try not to skid? Sometimes me and my mates have races where you can't pedal. Sounds stupid, but it teaches you not to brake so much through the rough sections, and ride smooth through corners. Dunno :?
Smooth with the ladies   Peachy U R the bom. So smooth with the ladies but still hangin out on Farkin? Is this where you pick em up

that sounds alright the non-pedalling thing. just take the chain off or something. cause pedalling is just a reflex with most people...or its just me

After having ridden a rigid for half a year, I reckon a hardtail with a 3", unplush fork is the way to go for learning smoothness. It makes you smooth without causing extreme pain to your wrists (mine are still recovering from the rigid forks - no joke).

ive started riding on 2 inch dualys and got my da bomb sputnik last week. havent had a shot on it yet but you can get smooth on a dualy. only pedal a little at the start of a track when practising and use your breacks only when u have to u will automatically find lines that are smoother and when it comes to racing you be miles ahead.
like fuzzy said u can always go thought the steps it also works well too.

lol - nah i'm only kidding i'm really bad with women, or shall i say at my age "girls." I only say shit like that cuz its funny, its the opposite of what i am. Doesn't matter, i'm still the shit 8) 8) lolz jj

Yeah you can't expect to suddenly get smooth (unless u're uber skilled) as fuzzy says take the stages 1. rigid 2. hardtail 3. duallie... although i don't think having a Rigid is really that necasary (can't spell) cuz all it does is smash your wrists. you need a bike with probably 3-5 inches to start off with....
i'm sure everyone here started off with like 3 inches travel around. How much travel did you guys start with anyway?

this is so right man.
i own the porest f*ing bike ever; its a '01 giant rincon (i can sense you laughing) i rode it stock for about a year untill i bought race face DH cranks, maxxis minion 2.5s, new wheels on dice smo's and so forth. but when i was riding it stock with its 1.9 tires and i got onto my cousins 222 i was insanely smooth because riding my junk ht i was always so scared of damaging my bike i HAD to flow with it. SO jump out to toys'r'us and waste $100 on a pile of crap and be afraid!
