If you want the best protection at the cheapest price, go to a motocross shop and pick up an MX helmet. The Oneal 601 (I think that's the number...) is what I own. Great helmet!

Pros:
The BEST protection - hell, it's DOT certified - that means it's street legal! (You could use it for a real motorcycle helmet.) They're about 5 times as tough/durable/safe as a FF MTB helmet.
Cheaper. A MadMax2 retails for what? $300? $350? I got my Oneal for less than $200. Nice graphics and styling, too.

Cons:
Heavier. But you can't get that kind of protection without some weight (unless you go for that pricey carbon fibre...). You'll only really notice it if you have to do quick side-to-side head movements (like looking beside you - not really a concern for most riding situations - you just focus forward...). I don't notice the weight at all, really.
No venting: Again, this is another sacrifice for safety. So wearing it for extended periods on hot summer days is going to be sweaty. But I usually take my lid off for the pedal/shuttle back up the hill, anyway.

Another thing to note is... go to a BMX race. Look at the riders. Only a few have MTB FF helmets. Most have MX FF helmets. And this is for the most intense kind of racing there is, IMO...

Do yourself a favour. Go to an MX shop just to look around before you commit to any purchase. You'll probably be surprised at how much cheaper armour is there as well.

Well, in that case... I guess it comes to the protection issue. Still, I'd stroll through an MX shop for a look around, anyway.

ok this is kinda stolen re-worded from another site/forum

"therwas a write up years ago which explained it.It has more to do with the fact that a moto helmet has thicker foam designed for harder impacts as u stated. On a bicycle generally you crash much slower and softer, which upon impact the foam of a bicycle helmet helps to absorb the impact of the fall.Due to the harder foam of a moto helmet if you were to fall it dosen't absorb the impact as much as a bicycle helmet would, which still leaves the possibility for your brain to suffer an impact.

so what i guess it's trying to say is that moto helmets are better for major crashs (really fast/really hard 50km/h into a tree stuff) but not as effective at saving your head for your regular mountain bike crashes.

oh and i have a 661 full bravo

What type of helmet do you have in the photo?

hahaha

Personally I would go the route of a motorcross helmet, having ridden BMX for the last 13 years I have tried many different helmets, but the best protection was a helmet I bought a motorbike place. Trust me I have fallen on my face on many occasions
