or maybe that mountain biker does heaps of road riding and needs a bar shaped like a road bike handle bar, becuse he cant get used to the mtb handle bar?
just guessing.

I think he wanted a lower, more forward position, and it looks like the bars are specific to that purpose.

Another possibility is that his bars came loose mid lap...

have seen it happen.

They look like handleber moustache handle bars, some US single speed riders use them, they sweep to the rear.

I'm sure I've seen that bike somewhere before.....I'll have a look when I get home tonight.

Mountain Biking Magazine

"So, imagine you're a previous NORBA US national champion, an Olympian, and a high profile professional racing for the most well known mountain bike race team in the sport. It's the last race of the domestic season. You've had modest results all year and aren't a contender for the overall podium spot or the US National Championship. You're about to race the short track. What bike do you use? Your team issue hardtail? A full suspension? If your TRAVIS BROWN (Trek/VW) you roll to the start at the Durango STXC race on a custom, fully rigid Trek T1 singlespeed with moustache handlebars and a titanium fork. And you finish in fifth place, you best short track finish for the year."

You can get the bars here:

Seems like you get a lower position and a nice wide grip for cranking on climbs, kind of like built in bar ends on a drop bar.

Kinda like the Bullhorn bars from the 90's....
