Hey all, i do XC mtb and am considering getting a trials bike, and start from scratch, and "learn trials". I love watching it, and now i want to do it! Spill your heart (sounds touching!) and tell me anything you want, if you think it might help me... Bikes? Skills!!!? Techniques? Basics?
Thank you!

I got a trials bike jsut for messing about at first, but yes it did help me with balacing and moving the bike around, it also worked the muscles in my back quite thoroughly.
I started on 26" because i thought it would be more similiar to mtb, but 20"is supposed to be easier to learn on.

Cool! I know the deal in XC, but its actually kinda cool knowing nothing about trials, and starting from zero, and learning something new! So you say 20" is better? Probably easier to move the bike around? Oh and it might sound stupid, but having the tyres so flat and squishy.... How often do you get flats? Is it an issue with Trials?

Best advice I can give you is to find some people (who ahve been doing it a while) and ride with them. You will learn heaps about the sport and figure out pretty quickly which way you want to go (stock/mob etc, style).
My suggestion as you are near sydney would be to hook up with the sydney guys on a weekend of wednesday night ride. Stick with your XC bike until you have learned a bit about trials because if you go out a buy a bike you can bet that you will want a different one after having done it for a while.
Pinch flats are not really an issue with trials (due to wide rims or something). It happens but not often (I have pinch flatted more riding XC than trials).
Check out http://www.observedtrials.net/vb/index.php Specifically the AU section for rides.
Good luck.

20 inch is easier to learn on, but 26 inch will make it easier to transfer your new found skills to the mtb.

Thanks! What do you mean by 'natural' (I'm up for some 'natural') is that like.... rocks etc, as compared to concrete / city? Other than that, good to know theres a trials site.. Even better!!

Natural is natural obstacles like rocks, logs, etc. The other option is street or man-made. Natural is generally a bit more difficult at first but is heaps of fun when you get into it.
Natural is where its at! Just thinking about all those rocks on our endless coastline gives me a ________!
dude if you live in sydney, the rocks everywhere are great
i only got a trials bike at christmas time, and last weekend was my first natural ride......
its heaps of fun
you could come ride around in manly with me because im still learning, so it would be maybe a bit easier to learn with a learner?
cheers
