hey, i was just wonderin if anybody could help me. i was wondering what people think is the best combo of gears to have (what tooth chain ring and rear cassette thingo) on a xc singlespeed. any ideas would be helpful.
Go to the singlespeed site on mtbr for all the info you need.
People will say 2:1... but really, start from there and find your best combo, it all depends on your legs and the terrain you ride.

singlespeed dh!
I use a 34 on the front, and then have 16, 17 and 18 teeth for rear. This way I can choose a gear for where I'm riding. I mostly use 34:17 around Sydney.

I ride everything from fast singletrack to long hills.
My combo is 36:16 for everything.
I can spin out to over 30 kms if I want and can maintain enough cadence to push through slow and tight tracks.

you must have knee tendons made of spectra.

Yeah, people have commented..and the guys I know who ride SS with me run more like 2:1 or higher but I dont like it.
I dont mind pushing the cranks hard when going slow and am just as happy to spin like a goose along bike paths....

I run a 36:16 and find it great. I do know a lot of racers seem to use 42:18 but that also depends on terrain, fitness endurance ect. My mate runs a 46:16 and I reakon he is fuckin nuts. But he still smashes me on most uphills. Mind you he does weigh only 65kg and I am a bit heavier at 96kg.
I run mine at 36:15. I mostly use my ss to comute. With that gearing I can power up all the hills and I'm getting pretty good at spinning with it too.

I just rode my single speed for the first time on the weekend at Helensburg, south of Sydney, reasonably steep up and down, and used 32:18. It fits in my vertical dropouts without the need for a tensioner. I have dodgy knees so wasn't keen on going to some bigger gear to start off with. For that terrain I think it was perfect. If it was flatter I might want to go to the 17 or 16 but I am used to spinning from the road bike, so maybe not. Somewhere like Kowen I might go for a 34 or 36 with a 17 or 16 out back. Haven't had enough experience with it yet, but had a blast and can't wait to do more.
id suggest just to buy a normal 24 or 29 speed derailer system because its so much easier to ride up hills and for descents you can use a high gear its not a compromise

It wouldn't be a single speed if it had 24 gears Rexy.

Hey Rexy, thanks!
I was wondering why I spin out so easy on flats and on hills I have to stand up all the time....

Vvvvvrrroooooommmmm!
I think what the commander was laughing at was the '29 speed' comment. Do the maths! I do believe 29 is a prime number so you'd need a single chainring and a 29 speed cassette!. Your rear dropouts would have to be spaced about a kilometre apart!
I run a 32 - 16 to achieve a 2:1 ratio but and find it sweet for all climbing but am going to try a 15 for a bit more top end.
I run a 44:16. It's spastically high, I'm gonna have to gear it down - I can't get up hills for shit!
I've locked in my favourites... 36/16 offroad, 39/17 onroad. My knees won't take much higher, and I find these ratios perfect for the said tasks. Did Oaks trail(yeh, mad ride:roll: ) and didn't have to walk once at all.
