View Full Version : BMX as mod? dumb noob alert!

I appologise in advance for the noobish stupidity of this, my previous and, undoubtedly, future questions :) ... but could one theoretically turn a regular bmx into a mod bike or would that be on par with turning a regular mtn bike into a stock?
Is the geo/weight/etc of the frame radically different, or with the right bits could it work just as well?

Won't work good, better off buying a cheap rhino, around $300 or less second hand

Mmm... not sure who Chris is exactly, but there was a 20" rhino for sale on here, I told him repeatedly that I was interested, but then I think he sold it elsewhere.
It's so hard to find an affordable mod around anywhere
I'd imagine you could learn basic trials moves- trackstand, backhop, etc. with a slightly modified BMX (smaller cog for one thing) but the geo is fairly different, so you'd be much better off buying a cheap mod, because then later on down the road when you buy a mod it might save you having to relearn some things.
Took me at least 6 months of looking everywhere before I found a halfway affordable mod :o

Yeah they are so rare! I mean unless you wanna spend $1,000+. The other slightly niggling problem in the back of my mind is, would a mod, especially say a Rhino, be too small for me? I'm 6' tall, and while I expect it to be small, I know some mods come in long and short sizes... hmmm does anyone happen to know the geometry of a Rhino mod???
My thinking is maybe start on this frame and I can always change it down the line.

Got it in one.... I ride a stock but can tell you this wouldn't work very well. The geometry is too different. plus you would need new brakes (requiring V mounts on the frame and fork, new stem and bars, probably a new fork, new drivetrain components.....
It just wouldn't work. The difference between MTB and a stock is quite big but the diffence between a BMX and a Mod (mod is for modified) is as big or bigger.
Check out http://www.observedtrials.net/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=13 and you might be able to pick up a second hand bike. Although if you are 6 foot then I would consider a stock too...

I'm 6', and I ride a Monty X-Hydra, which is a short mod I believe. It does feel a little weird, but you get used to it, and it's the easiest thing in the world to throw around. And once you're on the back wheel it feels fine :D

Hup your timing is fantastic, I just lined up a sale to buy a rhino mod and was wondering about size... again :) Hopefully I'll get it this weekend. You just made me feel better

Awesome dude, welcome to the world of trials :D
I assume you're already a member on otn, but if not, www.observedtrials.net is a great resource, and you can hook up with other NSW riders through that.

Yeah I just joined observedtrials the other day. I just like sifting thru posts.... if you search long enough someone else has always asked the same dumb questions I wanted to :)
I don't think I'm ready to hook up with other riders yet though, I really still have to get the basics going alot better. I watched a few clips from trials-online.com and that was helpful. I'm also thinking of getting Ryan Leech's DVD.
All this rain recently has stopped me going bush, and so I have just been going to my local school yard to practice this stuff on my stp... but now it's all I can think about, I just wanna get down there and practice more stuff, bugger the DH bike hehe.

This is a good DVD to get the basics from, like trackstanding/hopping/ups/drops, so I would recommend you get it. It will speed up you learning curve...

So I ordered the DVD, and just picked up my Rhino mod from DNF (another farkineer). Wow I'm gonna have to learn to ride all over again, it feels SO different to the STP. The steering feels super twitchy too, and it feels a little small... I'm guessing a longer stem will fix both those problems.
Which brings me to my next problem... where can I get one? I have seen echo stems 160x25 (the rhino is small and I'm 6' so I think need something pretty darn long) but I looked on biketrialsaustralia.com and they didn't have any stems at all. Anyone know where I can find something or they maybe have one they wanna part with?
So if it's not raining this arvo I'm off to learn to ride all over again

You can probably find a good cheap second-hand one- the Australia section on OTN usually has for sale posts from people in Australia, cause no one wants to ship things from America.
Yeah, it feels really awkward at first, but it becomes easy enough to get the hang of. The best way to learn is from other people though, so I'd suggest getting out for a ride as soon as possible.

Went for my first ride yesterday arvo... after some initial wobbles trying to get used to the feel of the bike, and feeling like a giant on the thing, rode for about an hour and while I couldn't do much to begin with, I was doing more and feeling better before long :)
Yeah just everything felt better, more stable, easier to make little pivot/hop adjustments, easier to rotate back or front wheel, side hope are on both sides now rather than just to the left, and I could pivot up some things as well
Have sooo much more to go to even say I have the basics down, but man is this ever addictive!

Mods are easy to learn on, I rode mod's for around 8 years and I am about 6 foot tall apart from looking daft on it I could ride it better than the stock I am currently riding.
