Hey guys i want to know if there is any tips on how to land on a flight of stairs. Im scared shitles about stacking on a stair case.

The faster you go, the smoother it is.
Get some practise, find the tallest single-set staircase around, and bunnyhop off the top down it, with your bike angled so you land both wheels at the same time.
Keep your body loose, and enjoy the ride.

Practise it, as I said, go fast, it isn't hard... you'll get the hang of hopping down single sets and soon work up confidence to go bigger on them, and eventually stairgaps will be an easy affair.

yer thats good advice, rik" the faster you go the smoother it will be"
becuse if you go slow you can feel each bump and that shakes the hell out of you.

Little word of advice, before attempting a stair jump, make sure you have strong/straight rims, nothing worse than going into a jump with semi-buckled rims and receiving a nice big flat spot on the rim.

If you got something decent then no worries, but yeah, just watch out.

theres a mint drop to stair tranny outside the central library in civic square, it's a 4 foot 45 degree runoff drop onto stairs, how should i go about it?

i think you should bunny hop like 1 metre before the stairs to land on them. It depends on your speed on how far in front you should bunny hop to land on the stairs

Yeah, basically its like landing any tranny. make sure you have your weight WELL back when it transitions to concrete or whatever at the bottom of the stairs, with all the speed you'll be carrying.
And closer spaced stairs are easier to land on.

if ur really only just starting out, practise riding down the stairs fast b4 u attempt airing onto them.

hit it like anything else, its smoother on a hardtail, esp larger stair gaps, the stairs are a mental thing, its like hitting any drop, put ur mind to it ull do it

Find a small set.
Go fast and just roll into it. The worst thing u will do is case the set of stairs and feel a bit of a crunch.
hit it like this dude:

so wat do u guys reckon, hardtail or 8 inch dully for stair gaps,

Rik
22-01-2004, 12:28 AM
Well naz reckons hardtail with 8" is the way to go. But he's a little... yeh, odd.

A big dually is a good way to learn, if you case your rear wheel it'll absorb it, whereas you do that on a hardtail and you get bucked, and will superman to flat  ;)

bryn
22-01-2004, 01:04 AM
i reckon hardtail to..

naz

hardtail is the only way,
the rear suspen, packs up too much n sounds like its bottoming

Techno Destructo
22-01-2004, 02:29 PM
Heh, I think if you own a dual, then that's definitely the way to go. Less stress on the bike, nicer landings, less "bucking" if you come up short.

I would have rather had a dual suspension for stair-gaps, but I only own hardtails, so whatchagonnado?

Just like most things, stair-gaps do look more impressive when you make things more difficult for yourself.

Maybe do your first gaps on a dual, and when you get more comfortable with the whole routine, switch to a hard-tail?

naz

rob...seriously i rekon its worse on a dh bike, my suspension use to pack up and not rebound enough n continually bottom my rear it sucked, hit it on a ht n floated down the stairs!!!
start small...

having never ridden a duallie i can only assume that a duallie would be easier, purely coz its hard on a hardtail. Dono though, hardtails are easy to work in the air so its probably easier to set the bike up, just land both wheels together and hit it with speed, should be fine

Just hit it but like they said keep your bars straight...i have Dice twofours and suspension soaks it up pretty well....

I jumped bout 1 3rd - half way down the stairs behind ocean world and it put a 4 inch long caved-in-side-wall on my back rim...which is to be expected from dice rims. Cheap cunts they are!

big_pete
31-03-2004, 07:32 PM
and i was thinking about buying those rims!
stairs ive heard are big big big bike brakers

What sort of tyre pressures should you run for this sort of thing? I am always getting pinchflats when I do a bit of urban assault.

Rik
31-03-2004, 08:03 PM
The idea is to not assault the urban, but to ride it. Run high pressure, as high as your tyres are rated to. I cannot fathom the need for low pressure on hard surfaces.

NightRider
31-03-2004, 08:09 PM
I only have a mini-pump at home, and tend to be lazy with dropping into the servo to crank up the tyre pressure. I end up with flats as a result. I will learn. One of these days...

I have Maxxis DH tubes, with the Butyl casing and double track rims...At 15 PSI, you;ll never get pinch flats.

you may not get pinch flats but ull most certainly get flat spots, i agree dice fucken suck, trailpimps :) 521 crack something hectik
i run 30-40psi stair gappin

Yeh...its only on the back rim...which happens to be a *shithouse!* dice... The double track is still holding up to everyhting so far. And, i also have the luxurious, ahh...err...luxuary, ( :P ) of 8 inches in the rear...so that must contribute to the lower pressure.

Personally i find that going over the stairs faster and having my mind set on landing smoothly gets me over with not much fuss. I let my tyres off a touch just for a bit more comfort but other than that, thats all i can say.

Just be ready for what you expecting to produce out of it :)
