Hey guys I am thinking of upgrading to disc brakes what is a good wheelset? :D

jays_5000

Why not just upgrade your hubs?

It would be cheaper, or do you want to upgrade your rims at the same time, because in that case a new wheelset would be cheaper. :D

It would be cheaper
Not always... say
$120 for both hubs (and that's a cheap set), $64 for spokes, and $70 (very cheap quote) for the wheelbuild, it's not that cheap, especially when shops can get prebuilt wheels using similar hubs for the same price that'd cost you to do the rebuild.

if you're made of money either crossmax sl, crossmax sl or spinergy xyclone. if not then mavic make some cheaper ones as well which you can't go wrong. for a disc wheelset crossmax enduro are $1000, then there is also another one about $600 or $700 called crossland or crossride or something. the bonus with all the crossmax wheelsets is you get tubeless (i think it's a bonus anyway, some people don't). the problem with all but the cheapest mavic wheelset is they use their own style spokes so if there is a problem it takes a while to fix. having said that the are very reliable wheelsets. hope this helps.

Tubeless wheelsets are also heavier than standard... So tubeless rims are not necessarily a good thing. Unless you're going to actually run UST tubeless of course.

I run Mavic X223 rims, Formula disk hubs and WTB spokes... works well for me. :D

I was thinking of getting this off Bryn what do ya think and how much is it worth?

REAR white industries over sized hub 500 new (disc compatible) to a SMO rim. Both of these are extremely strong. QR and will come with skewer.

Um hello anyone out there??????

Cúl-Báire
12-01-2004, 05:20 PM
Depends what you want it for really? What comes down to is Weight VS Strength; are you a rim buster or pussy foot about :P Also to consider what type of riding you are doing. I wouldn't use the SMO build for anything like Enduro or XC racing, but It would probably make a fine trail/all mountain wheelset .

Also a note, you can get away with light weight rims if the spokes are strung extra tight, although when a wheel goes, it goes :P

Goose
12-01-2004, 07:44 PM
yeah I am not into racing. I just do xc on the trails no jumps or anything like that.

12-01-2004, 07:51 PM
smo is a no go

Rik
12-01-2004, 08:59 PM
SMO's weigh 920g a rim.
To put that in perspective, I had a front XC WHEEL that weighed 970g, and that was disc compatible too (could go lighter with a rimbrake-only wheel).
Don't touch the SMO... find something that's more practical.

gee thanks guys..

How would you feel if someone sold you something that was inappropriate for your purposes?

Don't touch the SMO... find something that's more practical.

I have 2 of them, both with hookworms, yet my bike is still lighter than my mates stock One25.

They feel a tad heavy when you first get them, but it takes you about a week, if that, to get used to them.

I can still bunnyhop, bunnyhop - manual as high or maybe even a little bit higher than I could with out them.

They are a really tough rim, when I first got the hookworms and was messing around with different tire pressures, I rimmed out quite a few times, on the edge of metal lips (not coping) on a funbox at my skatepark and there is no evidence at all of a flat spot.

I don't want to get rid of them.

Rik
12-01-2004, 09:08 PM
You're deluded, this is the XC forum!

I've owned a set (just sold them), great rims if you're abusive, but damn that weight. And you've got hookworms on them! holy crap, talk about lead-weighted gyroscope.
Although I shouldn't say much considering I own a set of doublewides right now, and have a kujo on one

jays_5000
12-01-2004, 09:12 PM
great rims if you're abusive,

That's why I don't want to get rid of them... I've turned 2 axels into 5 in less than 24 hrs, yet the wheels are still in perfect shape.

How would you feel if someone sold you something that was inappropriate for your purposes? yeh i know rik i was joking. i didn't know you wanted them for xc until now goose..

Goose
13-01-2004, 05:59 PM
Ah IC but that is what toowoombarider wanted them for too. so how much where you thinking of selling it for though. Just curious? PM if you want.

Well guys what do you think about this one then? Mavic X-139 / Formula hub wheelset Strong, disc ready wheelset. Perfect upgrade material or for a second wheelset. http://www.phantomcycles.com.au/Content.asp?S=Details%20@ID=1182

Not bad for the money, not bad at all...
Nothing fantastic, but I'm sure it's competant.

Goose
14-01-2004, 04:13 PM
Well they are sold out anyway. So what would you guys recomend to a person that is not going to race or do great big jumps and thrash the bike around?

LordNikon
15-01-2004, 07:55 AM
All depends on your budget...

My advice would be to shop around and see what you can get for the money you want to spend, then ask for opinions on those options.

Goose
15-01-2004, 07:22 PM
That is the problem I don't know whats out there.

What do you guys have on your bike for XC and tell me the price if known. Someone was going to sell me his wheelsets for just under 1,000.

Ialso was going to guy balfaboys rims but they got sent to syden by accident so that went out the window. He had Sun Rims CR18 Rims black formula disc hubs For $300.

LordNikon
15-01-2004, 07:43 PM
I'd be very careful of buying 2nd hand wheelsets. Get into your local bike store and chat to them. The wheelset you were looking at looks good, but personally I'd go for the X317CD rims, with formula sealed bearing hubs.

mavic deemax or d321's

LordNikon
15-01-2004, 10:36 PM
We're talking a cross country wheelset here Psycho...

Deemax and 321's are specifically DH and freeride products.

15-01-2004, 10:37 PM
For xc I use mavic x221's with xt hubs.
Not sure if they're still available new.

®ider
15-01-2004, 10:38 PM
hmm i think you should go X317 on XT hubs or something.
or go for some crossmax XL rims if you got money to dish out.

Just as an addition to the suggestions, I'm contemplating building Velocity VXC's on to Aireal hubs, should look pretty good (wank factor ++), plus from reports they're light, quality rims.

Goose

If there is damage to the side wall of the rim can it be fixed? I saw dom was selling his with some damage.

Mavic X317 with XT hubs/Avid mechs I have read this from another forum.

Goose

I am thinking of getting some made for me as you never know what damage to the wheels have been.

What do you guys think of The XT disc hubset spokes (DT s.s. plain guage silver) velocity's rims?

DEVLIN
20-01-2004, 05:08 PM
Go new. Velocity make great rims. Their Aerohead would be a great choice. Maybe Sun Rynolites if your and bit harsher on your rims. You could look at American Classic MTB wheelsets. They are light weight and pretty well built. Not expensive either.

I was thinking the VXC DISC. http://www.velocitywheels.com/MTB_rims.htm

yeah, meant to be retailing around A$900. very good value. ring jbcycles on (03) 93291833. this is the only shop listed as a dealer on the american classic website.

Also check out Stans No-Tubes Wheel set. They do an awesome new rim that seals UST and std. tyres with a new shape to the inside of the rim.

They weigh 633/751 grams front/rear with American Classic Hubs. Benefits abound here and I am seriously considering a set of these over Am Classic for my race wheelset.

They are US$550 direct from Stans. They can be used with or without their rim strip. They suggest anything under 40 psi needs it. Which for me I usually run about 30 psi so an extra 57 grams a wheel for the strip. The only issue at the moment is getting them from the States. Maybe Saul will have them in stock soon. Give him a ring and ask him.

"A concentrate of Tubeless UST technology on an "affordable" disc wheel for daily cross-country riding.
High performance and efficiency :
A Maxtal, SUP rim, combined with the new Fore concept, provides a strong rigid product. The strength of the Mavic bearings is exceptional. A better grip due to the possibility of riding at lower tire pressure than with a tube.
Lower risk of flats :
The absence of an inner tube, rim tape and drilling inside the rim wall greatly reduces the risk of flats. If there is a puncture, it can easily be repaired with a patch on the inside of the tire.
- Weight : Front : 865g / rear : 1045g.
- Black anodized, Maxtal, SUP welded rim
- Fore technology, valve hole: 6,5
- 8 and 9 speed, HG compatible, steel freewheel body
- QRM Mavic quality bearings
- 24 front bent spokes and rear crossed spokes
- Zamak spoke screws and brass nipples"
From: http://www.cyclelink.com.au/category47_1.htm

$999 RRP - Make me an offer. These are brand spankin', in-the-box new!

Hey Goose

I have a some Mavic Crossrock Tublless UST 24 spoke wheels with disk hubs you can have for $160 These are in great nic

But

There is always a but :!:

The rear requires a new hub which you should be able to get for a round $200.

The Hoops are prerfect as are the spokes and UST nipples. I'll even throw a couple of 6 inch hayes rotors in if i can find em.

I don't care if I don't sell em, Just thought I would try and hook a brother up.

Cheers

SW are they for XC though? It will cost me $460- $470. For the wheels to be made for me. So if I can keep that down I will say yes but will have to wait till mid to late feb before I can give you cash.

Goose
24-01-2004, 04:30 PM
I have read they are a heavy rim. But I will get em and use em for spares and or wack some slicks on em and use for urban riding.

Goose

These wheels dont seem heavy to me but then again they dont have tires on yet.

LordNikon
01-02-2004, 01:20 PM
Cross Roc wheels are not heavy... but they are if you use them as standard rims (eg. put tubes on them). Use them as they were intended Goose, with tubeless tyres.

Goose
04-02-2004, 04:52 PM
I heard that tires are limited and price is higher.

LordNikon
04-02-2004, 07:38 PM
True... there aren't as many tyres available here, but you can get pretty much any kind of serious tyre you might want in a tubeless version...

If you've got the rims to run tubeless tyres then you may as well, it's a big weight saving.
