View Full Version : Front-wheel spin off.. stuff
Hey there peoples
Just after a bit of advice.
For some time now, i've been wanting to master the impressive trick of doing a 360 off a ledge/drop/whatever. Say for instance you're on something 2-3 ft high, and want to spin off it, rather than just hop off on the back wheel.
I can get 180 on the front wheel on the flat, then another 180 on the rear. However every time i try to do it off something, i seem to just get the spin on the front wheel, then land the back wheel losing all my momentum.
I'm thinking you have to put a fair bit into pushing off the front wheel before the back wheel lands, bringing the front around.
Anyhow. I want to have a go off something a bit higher, like about 3ft, and just throw everything into it (that's how i learnt 360's off a jump :)), but i'm scared of buckling wheels (and bones).
Cheers

Yo, I'm a bit late on the reply here but the 360 spin off is pretty simple. The first thing is to practice (on flat ground) a spin on the front wheel like you're doing already but as you come around, hop with the front wheel as if to move it off an object. If you can do an endo, and as the back wheel reaches the top then hop the front wheel a little then you're off to a good start. Practise this a bit on flat ground before trying it off anything bigger than a curb.
If you're doing 180 rockwalks then thats a good start but to make it all the way around you just have to commit and prompt the turn around by turning your head, upper body will follow. If you've got some skills already then a flick with the hips to flick the back around can help but after a while you'll be pulling 360's no sweat with only small movements.
Keep practising and once your front wheel hop gets bigger and more confident you can use the 360 spin off technique to actually get up stuff, I know that sounds like bullshit but like you did for the spin off, start with spinning and flicking off the front wheel and up a curb, then a park bench, then a picnic table. You just have to make sure your rotation starts in precisely the right place.

ripper 1st post keep it up!:)
Hey there
Thanks heaps for that reply.
I'll get into practicing that ;)
I watched Ryan Leech's Mastering the Art of Trials yesterday actually. It should prove to be pretty helpful. Lots in it. Alot to take in. Think i'll have to watch it again for sure.
Well thanks again :D
Oh btw. with the rockwalk, i find i often have to do a bit of a hop during the 180 rotation on the back wheel. Any advice on how to make this transition smoother (other than getting a frictionless rear tire ;)). Just i find it kind of inhibits my transition into gettin another spin on the front weel.

I've also had heaps of trouble with this. Been riding years and never really mastered the 2nd 180 rotation on the rear wheel...
Soo... also awaiting some help on this... ha ha

I got nothing sorry.....
Try posting it on http://www.observedtrials.net/vb/index.php? and I think you will have more luck than here.

OK dudes. here we go
on the rw rotation (2nd 180) on flat, spinning without a hop will come naturally after you practice it enough. just give it a bit more swing/preload on the front 180 first, that will give you enough momentum so the rw 180 doesn't need a hop.
a good way to learn, also, is to release the rear brake whilst spinning and give a slight kick on the pedal.. careful.
with the drop 360, its different because you're using the front wheel alot more than on the flat. so lean into the front and do the endo 180, then look over your shoulder and swing the front off the wall using your shoulders and arms.. keep them relaxed though! and remember to push the back wheel down using your legs
the harder you "push" into the front and preload your weight at the start of the move, the quicker you will spin. this is particularly important on lower things (like 1-2 ft) where you dont have enough time/space [continuum lol] to spin. Saying this, the higher it is (eg 5' +) if you spin too fast and not smooth enough your back wheel won't be happy. don't do a really high endo either, not necessary..
common mistakes (from experience)
not throwing the front off and away from the wall
not committing to the spin-- ie half-assing it or bailing out halfway through the front 180
not throwing the front fast enough off the wall
not looking over your shoulder and using your hips enough
not pushing the back wheel down -> flat landing
...the worst thing you can do it not commit, not spin, lean too far back and fall backwards either onto your feet (hopefully) or worse, onto your back. this hurts
well sorry it was so long. but in all honesty its not a hard move, i learnt this fairly quickly when i was about 17. and could do it on a bmx too.
good luck and i'm sure you'll be right!! :)
useless trivia: won a local bmx street comp (mtb frame snapped) using this and other "trials" tricks. that was 2001 i think haha
Thanks heaps man!
Good post :)
