Dozer
24-04-2007, 01:25 PM
Round 3 of the IXS Gravity NSW state downhill series will be held at Mt Coramba in Coffs Harbour again on the June long weekend (9th & 10th) in 2007.
Riders turned out in mass numbers from all over the country in 2006 and the event will be remembered for not only the rain on practise day but for the awesome experience of riding one of the best tracks in the country.

To get the ball rolling and inform you of some of the happenings, I've attached a "work in progress" event flyer.
Entry will be $80 for senior riders and $60 for juniors! Day license permits will be available for those who don't have an MTBA full year license.

More details will be posted as I confirm a few things but rest assured........Coffs Harbour will be the one event that you need to attend in 2007!

*Online entry is now available! Please click here (https://commerce34.pair.com/tzone/events/nswmtb/downhill/index.php) to enter online.

Crozzo........it is the 9th and 10th.:p I belive that the "can't purchase a day license" only exists when racing in the single event state championships, not the actual series. You can buy a day license........

To get to the mountain from the south.........
-Stay on the Pacific Highway and go through the city centre of Coffs Harbour.
-When you go over the big hill you will see the Big Banana on your left as you head down. Get into the left hand lane as the road flattens out and hits the 80km zone.
-Turn left into Bruxner Park Rd about 1km after the 80km zone starts.
-Follow this road up the winding hill and stay on it as it heads downward again into the thicker forest. After about 6kms of winding road you will come out on a flatter area and you'll see a bus shelter on the right hand side of the road. Turn left there into Mt Coramba Rd.
-The road is bitumen briefly around the homes then it starts on dirt road. Please drive slowly and quietly around the homes and up the hill. Parking will be organised by the volunteer fire brigade so please abide and say G'day to them, we thank them for helping!
-The pit area is located half way up the hill (same as last year but with more parking!).

To get to the mountain from the north.......
-Stay on the Pacific Highway.
-When you go through Sapphire Beach you'll head up a steep hill with a speed camera watching you so don't speed! Jump into the right hand lane as you enter the 80km zone and turn right into Bruxner Park Rd. Follow the above directions and you'll be all set!

I'll post more relative info as it becomes available. Keep in mind that we are having an after party again but at a different venue to last year. We will be at The Coffs Hotel which is in the centre of town on the Highway. We will be screening MTB films in our own private room, we will have a great dinner menu to choose from and the bar is well stocked! Juniors are also allowed to the after party as long as they nominate a guardian to watch over them. This could involve paying me $20 when you get there to tell the bar staff that I am your guardian..... . Juniors can't drink alcohol so don't!
There may also be some prizes to give away at the party so come along and enjoy the night.

Dozer, might be an idea for the pub to run an armband system to identify those who are of age and have provided i.d. to prove it.
Pubs cant risk getting caught out for underage drinking...massive fines for all involved.
This would be a tip for you young'ns to bring legal I.D. if ya wanna have a brew or 30!

Online entry is now .......online. :o Click on the link in the first post of the thread and lock it in!

Some may remember at last year's event that we had some drama's with parking. We will be doing it better this year because we have more room to park cars closer to the pit area. At this stage we are planning to have all of the vehicles which are setting up tents etc parking above the pit area in designated areas and other vehicles park below and outside the pit area. We are trying very hard to avoid parking anyone at the bottom of the hill and shuttling them to the pits. Shuttle vehicles will be used for shuttling riders to the start of the track only.

26 days to go folks.

Just an reminder that online entry is now open. There will be a $30 late fee again for those who don't pre-enter so we're encouraging everyone to take advantage of the $30 discount so to speak.

Doing a pre-rego will not only make your entry cheaper, but it will help us determine the size of the field we need to cater and organise shuttles for - Yes, if you want shuttles to run as fast as possible, we need to know how many of you are coming so PLEASE PRE-ENTER.

NSWMTB appologises for not having the sponsor tab in previous online entries, but this has since been sorted so that's another reason for you to pre-enter and support your sponsors who look after you.

If you're coming up with some mates or family who aren't riding, please ask if they can volunteer for a small part of the day. Every bit helps.

If you're coming from Canberra, Newcastle, or Western Sydney and would be keen to help us tow trailers to the race, we would greatly appreciate it. Please contact me at dh@nswmtb.asn.au for how we'll compensate you for your efforts.

Yeow!

Dozer, so the trak is the old one? No extension?

The same track with some slight variations. The extension isn't finished and it isn't race worthy.........too much of an uphill for a race run! It would've packed a 30 second uphill pedal at the end of the current track and the run would've been close to six minutes long..............riders would be buggered.

Dozer
16-05-2007, 11:53 AM
Seeing as people will ask, here is a fairly lengthy description of the track we will use for the race. I took this post from last years thread and I've edited some points to make it more "now".
The start area will be on the crest as used in the "06 race. For those that know, the top rock section will not be used (and is closed) because it isn't easy for everyone to do. This section doesn't have any B lines for less experienced riders so we canned the use of it. I'm not building B lines because it will take another year to cut through the lantana. Please don't ride the top rock section. It is dangerous.
The first section of track runs straight down over reasonably smooth single track. It then turns left into a high speed slippery corner. (Note - this section has a new line which may be used.....we'll see). This then leads into the run up for the 30ft gap jump. The landing is short and slowing down for the next turn after the jump has been fun for some. If you can't clear the jump, you don't want to be short, ride around it if you doubt it. This jump has a B line around the outside of it.
The next section goes into tight, steep single track with scattered roots and rocks. There is a pallet drop (5ft) which can be rolled and there is a B line around this obstacle which is easy but slower. (Note - this section may have two seperate lines before the pallet drop to define the A and B lines better). The landing turns right straight away and rolls you into a double made up of small logs. This can be rolled fast or jumped. The next left hander is tricky with roots running diagonally across it.
It then runs steeper over a small drop into a bermed right hander, then another log jump into some narrow fast stuff. The next turn is a berm blast right hander which is great to hit fast.
The track then winds over several logs and rocks into a fairly steep chute with only one way through: straight over rocks and small roots. (Note - there is another new line to be finshed before the race which may be used here instead of the straight section). The end of this fast steep section has a 90 degree right hand berm into another lefty. This then rolls (or jumps) over a small rock section and out into the fast bit.
The fast bit has a fairly fast kicker which is good for style points, there is a good fast pedal here into a small kicker which turns left over a crest. This corner over the crest is great, it kicks you in the air while your turning into the lefty and throws you down into a fast rocky descent.
The next turn is a big braking spot which will have some nice braking ruts into by lunchtime Saturday. The next section is an S bend (left right) over some roots and rocks. Then you gas it out of there into another faster left right set of berms. This section mentioned is great fun, use your tyre grip there (trust me ;)).
After these turns there is several lines but only one will be used. The section has a bermed long left hander and loops around in a nice off camber right hander. Then you ride in between two stumps which are really slippery in the wet. A line has been made here where you can go left and drop off a 3 foot log or keep right and roll over the log on the pallet. Either way, you then ride down a steep and rutted embankment about 8ft high. Plenty of people have gone over the bars here so keep off the front brakes.
Now for the fast bit.....
After the steep roll in, you have a short fast pedal into the steep fast section. This section is flat out with three water bars leading into a massive G force left hander which eventually levels out. People have hit  80km  through this turn so be in your biggest gear for the pedal into the table top.
The table top is great. If you get right into it, you can down ramp it easy or even flat land. The down ramp is about 35ft away and very smooth. A good speed jump will get you over or a massive air will get you there too. This jump is a table top so rolling it is no worries.
The next jump to follow is also a hit it fast or hit it slow bit. You can boost over it or pump through it into another small kicker over a few rocks. Watch the very close trees around you though when you in the air!
The next section is a small bus top type rock garden. It is a quick right and left into a really narrow and fast sometimes even off camber part. Some people have jumped over this section and failed to rejoin the track, a few laughs.
The trail nears the shuttle road at this point with a nice stump jump. This can be rolled slowly with minimal air or hit fast and land on the big G out flat at the bottom. You can use the B line and not hit the stump jump also. Straight after you land is another kicker which is a flat landing, this then runs next to the road with a couple of little stumps to roll off.
The trail then runs onto the road (behind the bunting of course). Biggest gear here people and pedal hard up the fire road and over the crest. There is a small rest period here for those that want it. The next turn is a fairly quick lefty over a small kicker.
In the past (pre 2004), the trail has not turned left here but kept going down and includes the rock garden and step down. This section is no longer part of the Mt Coramba trail and is not to be ridden. The land owners are very angry at people going through there so please never use it. Use the trail I've described here or we won't ever be allowed to even ride here. Please be responsible and have some respect for the land owners and the reputation of downhillers.
Back to the action. The next section is fast and flowing. I built this trail a few years ago and some have called it the best part of the track. There is a fast right hander which pushes you out into a slippery clay cross over with an old 4WD track. When you cross this road, it tightens up and there is a left hand turn over a 2ft log. Then you go through a series of right and left hand turns with amazing grip. The next steep chute drops you off another 2ft log into a very slippery and off camber left hander. This turn can be hit on the inside line, the middle or the very outer edge, either way, you will almost come off because it ends with a big G out that wants to punch you off your bike.
The trail then goes into more of the above mentioned flowy stuff. It is really tight and has a nice drop which depending on how fast you hit it, ranges from 4ft to 8ft. Then there is a long left hander which gradually travels uphill. A little bit of pedaling here will get you over the crest and into the downhill again.
The bush in this part isn't as thick as the rest and will be dusty. There is a sweet right hander with a massive berm, then a similar left with plenty of drift . You then ride over some uneven water ruts and down into the finish straight. There is a double (for those that want to double it) with a small kicker and down ramp. Then the trail has a long timber rampthat drops into a low section with another little kicker. The trail ends here when you pedal out and onto the fire road and onto victory.
I believe this trail has basically everything. I guarantee you will want to come back again and ride here because it is just so much fun. The race is on the long weekend in June so we're expecting plenty of smiling faces by the end of it. Following the race on Sunday will be the after party, don't miss that one!

A few good videos have been posted previously in this thread courtesy of the Yup Boys, have a look at the helmet cam runs. Squid also posted Sam Davies awesome clip from last years race........hit it!

You can pick up your plate on Sunday but why miss a day of provided shuttles?

Awesome-o, thanks for that.

I'd love to be able to ride on saturday but as i can't yet drive myself it depends on dad's work etc. On the note of shuttles - how do the ones that will be operating hold your bike? Mine has saint cranks so if its with crank holders, how do they get around this? (surely a large amount of people racing would have saints too so i assume there is a way around it).

Thanks heaps!

Im prity sure that it will be the same as last year where they had some trailers that had crank holders and others that would hold you bike in a different way.
There will be away around it though so you'll be alright.

Online rego closes Thursday before racing. But do the organisers a favour and enter before this. Having a rough idea of how many riders are coming is a big help in organising amenities and shuttles. IF 90% of people rego in the last 2 days it's not much help.

Surely you have to plan time off and accommodation. Entering a little earlier won't kill you.

Just did some investigating and found that if you select Under 17's as your category, you get $60.00 as your total, although Under 19's and Junior Hardtail gets $80.00 as total.

Does this mean Junior hardtail riders (under 19 on 31/12/2007) do not count as Juniors? I sense some irony.

The track will be open to ride on the Friday before the race! Obviously it is private shuttles though.........
I will be doing some small things that day so if you see me just cruise past, say G'day and enjoy your ride time. Everyone who is racing the evnt will want to spend as much time on the track as possible so it is open slather for the bulk of the week before hand. Like I said, I'll be prepping the track so just take it easy if you see me working (hopefully you'll see me before you hit me or my cane knife!)...........
The attraction of this event is the track so come along as soon as you can that week and have a blast! If anyone wants to lend a hand from out of town with putting up bunting or any other jobs, feel free to join in.
This is a race for the people, a celebration of all things cool.;)

26 days to go folks.

Just an reminder that online entry is now open. There will be a $30 late fee again for those who don't pre-enter so we're encouraging everyone to take advantage of the $30 discount so to speak.

Doing a pre-rego will not only make your entry cheaper, but it will help us determine the size of the field we need to cater and organise shuttles for - Yes, if you want shuttles to run as fast as possible, we need to know how many of you are coming so PLEASE PRE-ENTER.

If you're coming up with some mates or family who aren't riding, please ask if they can volunteer for a small part of the day. Every bit helps.

Just a reminder to everyone..........PLEASE PRE ENTER! The online entry system is here (https://commerce34.pair.com/tzone/events/nswmtb/downhill/index.php). We are expecting some big numbers to show up so please get your entry sorted before you arrive. If you pre enter you save money and you save time standing in the line up on the race weekend. This is a very important facet of organising a race as it makes the initial set up so much easier! Please pre enter!
Also, if anyone would like to volunteer to do anything at the event, please let me know and we'll reward you.

Nah mate, it is payment on the NSWMTB online entry site as you enter or you'll pay $110 if you have to register on the Saturday. If you don't have a credit card, maybe you could give the cash to someone who has a card and they can work something out with you.

In saying that, pre entry will close on Thursday 7th June (next week) before the event. There is a bit of criteria available for dogs that want to enter the event:
A) The dog must enter in the correct sex category (male or female).
B) The dog must enter the correct size category (small, medium, large or "I've got a fat arse because my owner couldn't give a rats about me" class)
C) If a dog catches another dog on it's race run it must not slow down to sniff the other dog's arse. This is strictly forbidden.
D) Dogs who have entered are not allowed to hump the legs of any humans. This is also strictly forbidden as it may prompt some male human competitors to hump other riders legs.
E) The big issue..........If the dog fails to adhere to the strict "No shuttles unless you stand proud in the back of the ute" policy it will be shaved to make it look like a poodle. This in turn would make the the dog not look like a dog at all and it would have to leave the premises with a guardian driving a crappy Mercedes sports car.
A courtesy "dog shit removal" agent will be on site to take care of any turds that your dog may drop on the site.

Thanks Binner, you left me no choice but to post that after your efforts in last years thread!;)

Please don't bring your dog, that ^^^^ is all a joke...........

That is correct. You will recieve an email confirming the purchase. If you are worried that it didn't go through, just check your bank account status via internet banking, if you can't do that, ring your bank and check the details.

If it didn't go through, try again.

At last years event we had some issues with parking that were out of our control. This time around we are going to be doing it a bit different.....
As people arrive at the event, you will be instructed to park in the available positions up the hill past the rego and pit area. We have a fair few open spots that will house a few cars so please adhere to what the parking marshals ask you to do. When those spots fill up we will be parking cars in the next available spots down the road.
We don't have one car park for all to park in so please keep this in mind.
You will be able to drop your gear off to set up tents, pit areas etc but please do it promptly and move your car to the instructed positions. If we can get the parking sorted and organised, we can get you on your bike earlier.
Thanks for your co operation!:D

Don't forget the official after party is at the Coffs Hotel in the town centre of Coffs Harbour. just out of interest, for private shuttling on friday and monday (i take it track is open monday?), how are the legal issues for riders in utes, trailers, etc. i know its a public road, but are there cops about?
im all for having a good time riding however we get to the top, but don't want to get caught in the back of a ute, long weekend, double demerits, loss of license etc. or see any other drivers losing their license.
we don't even think twice about jumping in the back of utes at ourimbah, no big deal, similar track/shuttle situation, we've only seen cops there once, and they didnt take any notice.

so, do cops go there? do they care? do residents complain? just wondering folks.

All the time i have been riding up there i have not seen one copper at all. As long as you wear your helmet or something is should be fine. The residents that live near the mountain are right at the bottom of the mountain and will not see anything unless they come up for a look but they still dont worrry about things like that.
Every weekend that we go riding up there we all just jump in the back of the utes and dont think twice about doing it so you will be fine.

You sure can mate, it is open as of now.

-Please adhere to the parking directions when you get to the event. We have room to park a fair few cars up the hill past the pit area so please listen to the marshals and park where you are instructed.
-When you drive up or down the hill please leave room for cars to pass on your right hand side (two way traffic rules apply).
-The pit area may get congested early each day so please drop your gear off and move your car as soon as possible.
-We don't want to have any people parking too far from the pit area but we may have to. If we run out of room in the car parks you will have to park below the pit area. Keep in mind there is no shuttle picking up spectators or entrants past the finish line and you may have to walk a few hundred metres back up the hill (it is a beautiful place so enjoy the view as you walk back up......:o).
-The event has been prepared a lot better than last year but some things may be a bit of a hassle and hey, shit happens. We hope you enjoy your time in our area and I hope you love the event! Drive safe, have a good time and make sure you come and say G'day!

The track is so good. It is going to be going of!!!!
We put so much work into it on saturday.
Be carefull on your first run down the track cos there are some changes. On the first run in to the 30 footer there is a big wooden ramp going of to the side. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALOOK AT IT FIRST BEFOR GOING OF AND THERE IS A NICE SIZED DROP OF THE OTHER SIDE OF IT !!!!!
I just dont want to see people get hurt of it:rolleyes:

K from what the little rain guage thingy is telling me that is out the back of my house we have had 7 ml of rain from 5pm yesterday arvo.

Slip and slide is about right.
Rode the track today after abstaining during yesterdays pissing down rain.
It's not muddy yet but very slippery compared to what is was like early in the week when it was dry.
Shuttle road was even a bit slippery.

When heading north from Coffs Harbour you stay on the Pacific Highway. You will go through town past all of the shops and up the big hill. The Big Banana is on the left as you head down the hill....
When you get to the bottom of that hill be in the left lane when the 80km zone starts.
Take the next left into Bruxner Park rd. Stay on this road...up the hill.....the road flattens out a bit and winds slowly.
When you get into a bit more open space you will see a bus shelter on the right hand side of the road. Just after that is the turn off to the left into Mt Coramba Rd. Please drive slowly near the homes at the bottom and stay on this road as it heads up the hill.
There is a section half way up the hill that goes gently downhill, you will notice a large turning area on the road. Near that is the end of the race track, you'll see the timber ramp on the left.
If you drive right to the very top and look towards the sea you will see the rock section. Follow that down, up the small pedal and into the single track.
When the track comes out on the fireroad again make sure you go up the hill to the right of the shuttle road. Just as that hill crests you have to head left again into the single track. It winds down to the finish there....
