confidence is the key.. if you like the look of the drop then you'll have no probs doing it.. if its sketchy, then there is a fair chance you'll stack it and you'll need to be sure about your line and what you plan to do..
keep it within reason though...
hmmm, usualyy for me its a spare of the moment thing, ill just hit it, or think meh if i stack it will be funny

Facing and overcoming you own personal fear.
There is nothing like it....
Before attempting a drop you haven't done the first time, ie one that SCARES you personally, be it 3ft or 30ft, here's the plan:
(Assuming you are armoured up with a decent helmet)
- Clean, brush the lip(launch point) free of loose rocks.
- Check your landing and run out area beforehand.
- Get your line and speed dialled, but no more than 2 run ups. Anymore and you are just procrastinating and wasting physical and mental energy.
- If you are still procrastinating, then try the countdown technique.ie Subconsciously countdown 5,4,3,2,....1 and go on 1.
A good self induced slap in the face does it for me before I launch those 12inch gutters.

my advice to you all...think about keeping your feet on the pedals. i was hucking a 5ft. to fat on concrete on my ht up at bullert (small but nice) and was clipped in at the time. not having to worry aobut my feet i didn't think about them. when i hit the ground my foot came out of my fucking shoe and i copped a seat upi the ass. my mate said it was the funniest thing he had ever sean. to me it was the most painful.

If I am hucking to flat I always wear the lace up ankle braces if I am trying anything stupid, and get on the balls of me feet well in advance of launching.
I know what you mean. I have weak, skinny ankles and I'm still carrying niggling injuries from years ago.

my advice to you all...think about keeping your feet on the pedals.
if i'm worried about my feet staying on the pedals, i wouldn't be trying no drops... maybe you should ride with flats for a while to get some fundamental techniques down... your nuts are on the line!

i just go and attempt it, no thinking whatsoevar.
if you think about bad thoughts like whats going to happen to me at the end of the drop, will i land properly?, will i stack? what will happen to me? These a negative thoughts, you should keep your window open on positivity.

i was gonna hit this drop but i was told to hop off the roof. but i was up there for like 15-20 minutes looking at it and sweeping glass off the run up. i would have gone straight away but since im one of the very few MTB riders in Benalla i was told like 20 times that i was going to die by dumb kids who dont know shit about bikes and riders capabilities.
there was one kid that was saying "oh my god your gonna die". ten seconds later he was chanting "do it do it do it".what a fucktard.
I was at a rodeo on saturday and i was at the gates where they let the bulls go, fuck i was pumped, just by the positivity coming out of people around the gates, the coments like"it yours" "your gonna do it" and the look in his eye, then the gates opened. this guy was on the biggest bull by far it was like about 100kilos more than other bulls. then the sign of relief when he left the ring.
so i reckon people shouldnt comment unless it is positive. people shouldnt coment unless they know what theyre talking about.

start thinking that it will end badly and it will, but think of the cheers you are going to get from the crowd when you hit the landing nice and smooth. Be positve and you will make it.

bad thoughts lead to bad things , stay focused on the good
and nothind bad will happen ( most of the time )
but at 31 years young ,, still hucking big drops , gone through a few bones, stitches and plaster ..
keep your outlook positive and take crashing as a good tutorial
not a bad thing ..

In the words of the mighty Yoda "...there is no try, only do!" You must believe you're going to make it when pushing things to your limit (whatever that may be) or failure and pain will follow. Personally I see it all in my head before starting my run in, including a nice smooth line out of the landing.

Yeh the exact same thing is happening to me at the moment, people are sayin its a death wish, make sure you film ur death and shit, its not good for confidence. I want people sayin its easy, i showed it to thomas vanderham via email and he told me it was easy, thats like the only person that has said somethin positive except my mate who im doin at wif. My parents r telling me not to do it, it just shits me coz they aint experts!
for some reason when i imagine myself doin a huck i always see myself not only pulling it clean but i get sooooo much confidence in my head i see me styling it as well...not that i style it 1st hit..but..it helps when u over do it in ur head 1st so if u do it straight forward then its much simpler than wot u imagined at 1st if u get my mixxed up drift??
well first i roll up to it once or twise....or more  . i like to see someone do it smooth just before me and then pick your line, swear at the jump/gap/drop and then go for it!!

uhh... while im charging or whatever at it, i usually talk to myself about what i need to do. so on the run in im like: weight back, gritteeth
friends think im strange.
ahh well...

Ok, whatever you say chief...
I used to be scared shitless of stacking, but now I don't really think about it, the more "practice" run-ups you take, the less likely you are to hit something. You just gotta hit it. Out of all the new things I have tried in the past month I would have stacked maybe 3 times at most. Just go for it.
think happy thoughts ..... never think about stacking.... fire up and do it.
the glory is there down at the bottom. thats what i thought at the top of 20 footer at liz rock. and you know it worked made it clean as. video always helps with making the decision to go.... worked for me....

I find if at stand at the top of a drop checking it out I will end up not doing it if it is big. Best way is just do it straight up. I only started doing decent drops 6+feet (decent for me) a couple of weeks ago and am loving it.

Nothing worse than someone saying "just be careful" before you attempt it.
or say, oh shit we didnt clear the landing halfwa through

I've got a local track with a number of stunts to clean. Recently I hit the largest jump, which was an all or nothing beast with a verticle drop at the lip into a pit (where all the dirt came from). It took me many run ups before I hit it. Every aborted run up was shitting me more and more, but I wasn't going to let myself back out. Every time I thought I was going to do it I was sharply aware of my fingers on the brakes and I knew I was just going to use them. So finally, I had to reach a point in the run in where I just went "fuck it" and consciously took my fingers off the brakes. My mind just blanked as I went off the lip and the next thing I knew was that I had landed. However, I was so psyched out that I ploughed into a small sapling, removing one more obstacle from the side of the trail. :D I hit it up five more times after that just to make sure that I was doing it. The adrenaline hit from the first jump was intense.
The bottom line is that deep down I knew that I could do it. I just had to break through the fear barrier.

I just try and think happy thoughts like in that peter pan movie, then you think less off stacking and usually pull it of smooth, if you think to much about the proper technique and all and dont do it naturally, youll nail yourself in the dirt. no one likes dirt for lunch, id know.
just put your feet on and pedal, the only thing i concentrate on is the line, if i can get that right the rest seems to pull off. its exatally what happend to me first time at red hill, i was following my friend down the track, i didnt even know what i was doing, but i just thought fuck it. didnt realise what i had done and how stupid it probably was till i saw the track again when i had my wits about me. if oyu live in the omoment you wont fuck up. oh yyea, i also have a habit of not doign run ins, cos they just put me off even more

my riding mate tells me that he has already done any new huck that we come accross. i know he is probably bullshitting, and he knows i know, but i go harder to make him proove it to me.
if i stick it, he does it.
it's all about believing it can be done, and that your buddy *might* be getting better than you. pride is a mother of an incentive.

eyah, i love doin drops and shit but im not the bravest of all people, and i count down as i am rideing up to it 3,2,1. go if i dotn hit it on 'GO' i brake and run up again, dudes i ride with hate it it can tkae me half an hour to do one litlle drop when i had done a igger one next to it.
ithink landing anyhitng well is all in the mind!
I either run through it in my head, pulling it clean, if this doesnt work and i cant envision that then i trick my self by saying ill just do a run in and as i approach i just say "meh, fuck it" and go!

all u need is a camera, thats y i hit a 2m drop on my apollo with bent forks so if they snapped it would look cool, but with my new bike because its only 3-4months old i dont really care bout stuff like if the fork breaks i get new 1's for free if the frame breaks i get a new frame so on. counting down is always good it works well and also just going its only gonna feel like a 3foot drop or something and that way it should be a nice smooth landing because u are doing it like its small. forget about the brakes - theres no such things as brakes as u are going for it otherwise u fuk yourself.
Tomas

I know this is the same for a lot of people. I just say simply in my head, as mentioned above, 'Fuck it'. Get my finfgers off the brakes, peed ion the pedals, yank her up and bend thoes legs like they were 12" shocks.

if its big i just go. it might be scary but 99 percent of the time you are just making excuses not to do it
but if its really big i say to myself, if i dont do this how will i improve. The thought of me not improving is just unbearable, and plus if you try it now then its out of the way for later.
I just think - Whats the worst thing that could happen? - probably i fall off and scratch my knee or something like that. That was until i copped the ugly end of my handel bar in my eye socket :x . Now i wear goggles huck anything :D :D
Timmy Bee
19-06-2004, 01:04 PM
yea, i ussually think, whats the worst that could happen, and ofcoarse i scale it down to a scratch, but it could realy be death, meh.
mostly i think, how the hell would i ever become pro if i cant even do this, then i hit it. ha.
but i usually ride with my coasin and we are about the same skill level so if he hits it ok i generally know ill be able to do it.
