well, if your absoluetly sure off u aint gonna stack use clips. if you occasionly stack (EVERYONE), then use platforms, so u can bail.

i have jim cleickleci spesh edish hot pink odyssey platforms which i took town to a bolt shot to get some longer pins for. with the longer pins (say 4-5mm longer) they perform so fucking good it aint funny. always up for something new though. i ride platform street and clipless downhill, again it is personal pref..i like clipless cause im a roadie so yeah, it is up to you. gus, ever thinking about marketing these little beauties?!
go for some platforms. dmr make 10mm pins which you can put in most pedals

l'm using a set of dmr V8 platforms for street and general messing about, and clipless on the cross country bike.
Only had to replace 4 pins in the dmr's before l started to use a little bit of lock tight on the pins.
peachy

use to race downhill with clipless xc pedals on a xc bike. eventuall u become so used to it, that before u stack u naturally clip out
but i use platforms now because so much KEWLER and i don't need to put on the same shoes. AND PLUS clipless shoes cost a lot, and since i only have one pair its hard to match my shoes with my bag and what i wear

most of the free riders use platforms " u dont get as nailed when u stack " go for the bmx pedals they are always the go like primo or snafu.
im running snafu's at the moment and there bloody strong, good pedals usally only last me a year the these have last neally 2 years and get sealed pedals, alot smoother.

u dont need to pay dmr's exuberent (cool word) prices just to get new pins. just go to a hardware store or something.

Is exuberent kinda like exhorbitant?
exuberant: lavish, effusive;full of vigour
exorbitant: exceeding the bounds of custom, propriety or reason, especially in amount or extent
go platforms & buy grub screws from hardware shops

i swing both ways... spds/clipless are good for drops and faster riding, flats are beautiful for ragged riding, and clips are deathtraps

yep, but if they say husselfelt stay well clear of them....more slippery then a slippery thing.
Primo tenderisers are fantastic; got some on sale for $40 and very happy with them (like the concave design)....

Stuff Flats or clips - GT beartraps with removeable cages so you can sharpen them up, as good as being cliped in. Just dont cop them in the shin, u will need stiches

Aye, I've got the Truvativ pedals at the moment, but they're the ones without the screw in studs. I think I need some shoes with a chunkier sole on them and some more aggressive studs. The ones at the moment are pretty small, and easily rounded. Will be going to a SPD system soon though, heaps more confidence ... atleast I know I wont slip off the bastards.

yup i got the husselfelt pedals and they are crap as, very scary when riding espically when ur used to your feet not moving, so ive changed them for some SPD clipless and its so much better.

I just scored myself some Atomlab Aircorps...I tells ya, those things are rediculously grippy...you wont be moving your feet with those things. For platforms, they arnt cheap though, at around $280, they'll put a good dent in the pocket for pedals sake. You wont regret buying htem though. They look the shit and are really really grippy, not to mention painful.
Flats i would say, I am running wellgo's with the two extra pins in the centre, with some pretty large pins. They grip hella tight.

spd all the way...
I used to use flats for everything, but kept farkin my shins. So i bought shinnies and it was all good till my dog (rest in peace Taff) got hold of one of em so i had an excuse to try spds.
Went clipsless and got so much better control, power speed so now i use em for everythin. As for crashin, as peachy said u get into the habit of unclippin before u stack. I find movin with the bike and makin the bike move a whole lot easier with clipless than with flats.
Oh and if u have to ride up the hill to go down again u'll be wishin u had clipless :)

I used to ride in clips (which were great) but switched to flats about a year ago in an attempt to improve my technique. It is working - slowly slowly. In the mean time my shins have copped a hammering. Am looking into getting some pads - I just need some cash first!
I have a pair of V8's and a pair of V12's (both good - but the V12's are definately nicer!)
I need new pins for them. What is all this about getting the pins from the hardware store. Do they sell grub screws the same size?

DMR V8's are awesome pedal, but if you like youre shin surface smooth, and a normal colour, you should probably get clips, but i still reccommend the V8's, or V12's if your loaded
Golem
02-04-2004, 01:39 PM
it is possible to get replaceble pins in packs of 8 or something close, and they are very cheap, you should be able to get them where you bought the V8/12's originally

Im using fishbone's at the moment, work a treat.
I've got some DMR V12's as well, but the fishbone's are probably better.
I used to have some wellego's, bent them after a couple of weeks.

i have a pair of Kona Jackshit's that came with me bike. they r nam and u can replace the pins (with help from loctite) mosh half-stepos r cool as well. but at the moment i am running clipless and have fallen off alot less. it sort of makes you want to stick to the ground and go faster though

don't go dmr v8's they bend toooo easy if u enjoy a bit of hucking. Pay a bit extra for the V12's

Got a set of crank bros. mallet c, and they're the best of both worlds!
IMO, if you're going going to be doing some climbing on your ride, its definitely a bonus to have clips (increased efficiency etc). Makes hopping easier too.
However, having said that, it did take me about 6 months to be fully comfy being clipped into the bike; "training" the brain to clip out when the bike comes to a standstill, rather than panicking and trying to pull the foot upwards.

I have "HTI" platforms, which are distributed by (don't laugh) Trekking Fox, and cost me $17.95. I spotted the same pedal body in dirt works' catalogue with a different axle and sticker, and it was $65 or so...
awesome value platforms, 2 years old and no slop yet, replaceable pins, the works!
HOWEVER, the day I find some new-old-stock original 1980's Shimano DX platforms (not for ebay prices) , I'll be all over them like a rash, they are the original and best.
mtngoat, you got batwings?!?! they still make those gnarly old things??!! They were all the rage about 5 years ago.. mine were pretty grippy but I went through like 3 sets in 3 months because the cage clouted rocks and stuff and smashed apart - finished one rocky DH run with the alloy body just a few pieces of cage about 1 square inch hanging onto the cage bolts, on one crank....

take one foot off to slide corners,

lean back too much while manualing and need my feet on the ground, etc etc.
