Depending on your skill level and agresive anture will depend on how easy the transition is.
XC skills transfer over to dh quite well (probably sumthn to do with skinny tyres in techy stuff!) so if your competent it wont be sucha shock.
Were abouts are you from? Im sure the girls here will beable to help you out and poiint you in the right direction to get started. Best to find out which tracks will be better for begginers and go from there.
Do you have DH bike or suitable hardtail or are you going to give it a bash on the xc bike?
Glad to here you want to turn to the dark side, welcome to farkin!

Hey Jess,
Where do you live? I'm from Wollongong and there's lots of great DH tracks here and I've only just begun downhill myself.

Hey
I am also looking at getting into downhill. I have also been riding xc for a little while now and really enjoy it but would like to try something different. My partner and I recently went over to NZ... we went heli-biking and spent a few days doing the chair lift runs at Coronet Peak... it was so much fun. There are only two tracks at Coronet Peak atm as its only new... one is the Super D and the other is the downhill track. I tried both tracks... I must admit the downhill track was difficult as it was the first time i've riden a downhill track. It wouldn't have helped that I was riding an xc bike  I am planning on buying the new bullit at the end of the year... that is the best bike I can find with good standover as I am quite short.
I haven't riden any downhill tracks in Australia yet but am really keen to get into it. I live in Brisbane and don't really know of many good downhill tracks that are open to the public... except toowoomba. Does anyone know of any others?

Hey Jess,
where u from, i'm from canberra and only just started as well...
i ride mount stromlo majura pines etc, but i go to wollongong on the school holidays and on the odd weekend aswell and they are some of the best tracks to start on as long as u r not like me and go up a mountain for the first time and get a peice of slate wedged in your foot for two weeks ( i did it first time up mount keira in wollongong) but don't let me scare u dh is the madest sport i've ever done and i wouldn't change for the world!!!

I'm from Wollongong and i love to downhill. There are a couple of tracks up Keira, out towards Bulli and Thirroul and also Mt Kembla. I suggest going to a track called the Uni Track. It's a real good starter and has a really cool flow and a mad ass rock garden. Even my brother can do it and hes got a shitty little 17".LOL.:D. Also another good track that starts about 200 meters from the archery track up Mt Keira road known as "Holey" is a good track to get you started. At the end of it go up the sealed road to either the first track you see to your left which is a bit harder known as "Huckers" or go up further to your right to find a track that is "Holey Part 2". Also a good track that is hard to find the entrance to is "Possums" up at Mt Kembla. It comes of about 1 kilometer up Harry Graham Drive which is just past Kemla Heights. I hope this helps you and are all good tracks for starters and are worth checking out. you can also get tours through certain companies down to Wollongong from Sydney to go downhilling.;)

hey jess. stoked to hear you are getting into dh. you will fall in love with it. i would suggest trying out a race or 2. even if you are brand new to dh it is a really good place to meet people and get to know the riding community. sometimes dh can be a bit tricky at the start because it is not as accessable as xc but if you go to races you will meet other riders and the doors are wide open from there. i would also suggest that you ride a bit with the boys. sometimes it can be a bit intimidating but i promise it will do noting but make you a stronger rider. when you see someone do somehting with confidence it will make you a lot more confident. that is not to say that girls are not confident at all because there are so many rippers out there but the boys will push you. that is what has helped me.

Hey Jess, I just came back from my second Women's Weekend at Thredbo and it was awesome. You learn so much and my DH skills have improved significantly in a short period of time. Plus, I went from riding 85% of Thredbo to 100% and now I'm able to ride over anything because I've learned the techniques needed not to be scared to ride anything. I can always learn more so I'm heading back down for the second Women's Weekend in March. Check out the RawNRG website for more details. They welcome beginners and trust me, you'll have a ball!

Oooh! I would LOVE to go to the Women's weekend in Thredbo!! But I was just there just after Christmas for the first time, did the Cannonball initiation and had a ball, :)but didn't manage to conquer the whole course. So like you Nugs, I'd love to get from 85% to 100%. But I live in Tassie, so going to Thredbo for a weekend costs a lot, :( but it would be great! Jess, you should try and go it you can.
