I am thinking of buying a Giro Atmos helmet for XC racing and road riding/racing.
What do you guys think of this idea? Has anyone had any problems with them? Anything I should know?

i was looking at them, tossing up between the atmos and the bell sweep R, i'm going to go for the sweep just because of the better fit, but i've heard nothing but good news about the giro.
I was about to make the major mistake of buying one off the net though, then i remembered the whole 'australian approval', such an idiot.

I've owned 2 2006 models now, certainly one of the, if not the best road helmet, great for xc also
I would also look at the specialized decibel as an alternative, i think they are slightly cheaper also

While your looking at top end helmets, check out the lazer genesis (http://www.lazerhelmets.com/site/en/cycling/detail.asp?type=0&cid=146&cat=0&item=0), best fitting helmet I have ever owned, the rollsy adjustment system is second to none, its the only helmet I have had that I don't get pressure points. I have the XC version with a peak but you can get the road version without the peak for about $20 less.
Might be a bit hard to find as they have only just been standards approved.
I had a specialized decibel before this, which I thought was comfortable until I tried the genesis.

they feel absolutely horrible once the pads start to wear out but great with a new set. also the plastic on the inside is a bit fragile. but apart from that they are fine. they dont represent the best value though, the new specialized carbon one looks to be better built for similar money.

definitely the best fitting helmet i've owned. cannot be beaten on ventilation imo.
i also have a bell sweep and i would happily buy another of those too.

Are the pads replaceable?

Yes, but good luck trying to get Giro/Bell pads in Australia, I ordered from Chainreaction for my sweep XC, but even they took months to get stock it seems.

Well im on my 3th set in about 12 months and I am not even a ‘sweat dog’ like some people I know, so they do seem to get worn out quite quick
A small (but friendly) shop here took almost 3 months to tell me ‘pacific brands don’t want to ship just a padset’ so I just went to one of the big stores who had it in for me the next day, $15. prob order another set soon.
Long story short, mine is getting a bit ratty and the replacement will prob be a bell sweep R or the new lazer one like quick step use

Spoken to Phantom Cycles in Tahmoore. They said they can get them and have some on the floor now. That shouldn't be a problem.

Forgot to mention that, and the helmet bag, and the ventilation, felt i needed a bandana on our ride in the blueys last weekend. The more I wear mine, the more I know I have found "the one".
