I keep on hearing "Dont have cheese before you ride, it will hinder you".
I can see from experience that I does clog you up a little but what is the hard truth of this matter?
Does anyone have an article on this that I could read through?

Don't know.
But I love cheese and Branston pickle sambos on multi grain bread as enduro food.
The secret is out.

I've heard the same thing applies with eating yoghurt before you ride but I've never had any bad experiences from it. It is probably just some food technician nitwit claiming dairy products will reduce your pedalling ability by 0.0001%..............
A cold beer and a bag of salt n vinegar chips before you ride is your best bet.;)

Rubbish...
Wine however, is a different matter entirely.
Various theories will be fully tested in late October :0)

Define "clog you up a little"???
I would suggest for most people, Cheese is harder to digest than a lot of other foods. It has a higher fat content, proteins and lactose. All things which if gobbed down in great amounts before a race is probably not going to do you a lot of good in much the same way chowing down half a cow probably won't work for most.
I don't have anything in my list of links that suggest "No Cheese" other than suggesting stuff that's low in fat and protein for your pre race meal, something which cheese definitely is not... for me, generally *dairy spells disaster* is the mantra, to which even for a while there I struggled with full cream milk on the breakfast cereal for some strange reason and still give it a couple of hours now
Dietry stuff changes so much from person to person, regardless of any publication out there saying it's good or bad, if you're finding it doesn't work for you, don't eat it...
*shrug*

i cant have any form of dairy before i ride. it sits in my stomach and eventaully comes back out. that could possibly be what it is refering to.

True - if you go to a wine tasting NEVER eat the cheese which seems to always be on offer. Cheese coats/clogs the tastebuds and masks the true wine taste. I have been advised that if a winery offers cheese with the tasting, DO NOT BUY THE WINE.

Does anyone know about the theory of not having sex the night before a big event?
To quote someone recently:
"It's not the sex before a game that's the issue, it's being up all night chasing for it..."
can't remember who, a footy coach of some description I think.
so we can all rejoice!! as long as we're at home in bed by 8:30 :)

...is the cheese in a cheese burger? man, when I eat those puppies I usually find the opposite.. more of a lubing agent.. which would be good for dropping a few grams off the rider.. so, maybe it could be a performance enhancer.. weight-weenie style?

cheese, milk and yogurt tend to increase mucus production in the throat, so I guess that could be what is meant by "clogging you up"?

These food myths are grist to the mill for Tour de France writers.
Ice cream and dairy products (incl cheese) supposedly causes digestional problems - Greg LeMond used to eat ice cream sundaes to the ire of his team mates and other riders.
Seafood also supposedly causes digestional problems - Jacques Anquetil after a very hard day on the Tour in the 1950s ate a large plate of seafood in full view of all the other riders (who it was noted struggled to take down their liquified chicken rice meals).
Other foods are supposed to cause all manner of problems from muscle cramps to headaches.
While obviously high fat, high protein food (eg cheese) takes longer to digest than simple starchy meals, the pro peleton runs mostly on myth and superstition.
Other myths include:
* shaving before individual time trial (although Hincapie has a 5 o'clock shadow most of the time) because cuts from shaving might lessen a rider's energy????,
*living at high altitude and racing/training at low altitude - that one came from Tyler Hamilton whose blood was improved by things other than low oxygen air and
*no sex for weeks before a race (unless you're Mario Chippolini)

It's not limited by any means to cycling. I once was reamed for bringing bananas onto a yacht as it is apparantly bad luck. Sat on the rail and started chomping away and the owner went off his nut... I thought he was joking for a while. I didn't sail with him much after that, and have carried bananas on my boats to numerous successes so hardly saw the issue ;)
That and the colour green... you'd be hard pressed to find any sailing gear or boats that are green.... go figure! :)
Cheers
Gonz - who has his own superstitions I'm sure...

I believe they ban bananas from boats because the gas that they give off makes all the other vegies on board (stored in very confined spaces no doubt) go off/go brown quickly.
I just learnt that you can make an avocado ripen up by putting it in a bag with a banana for a day, so they're not all bad.

Mr Pants, I've heard that they produce something that repels fish so most fisherfolk will slap you upside the head most severely if you bring nanas onto one of their boats.

Does anyone know about the theory of not having sex the night before a big event?
Invented by those who aren't getting any.
Whether I 'performed' the night before or not has naught to do with race day performance, as i've proven time and again... I'm crap, whether I've had a shag or not :P
I always said i'd be happy to entertain a bevy of lingerie models the night before a big race, but man they're always washing their hair!

Does anyone know about the theory of not having sex the night before a big event? No,
wineries offer cheese for tasting the same as a sorbet will cleanse the pallette.
It is supposed to be neutral to cleanse the pallette otherwise all the wines will get gluggy on the pallette and taste the same, cheese softens the tannins in the wine which are very acidic, and start having an adverse effect on the pallette after a while.
The problem with wine tasting is the alcohol, after a couple of little glasses, people start getting tipsy and wine start's tasting good, then when sober it taste's like crap.
This scenario get's played out on a regular basis at wine tasting weekend's.
Even when tasting the grange tour or the hill of grace tour you are given cheese as well, and these two wine's are widely considered to be the best of the best!

I'd rather eat my weet bix. I use cortisone creme to keep my (butt) cheeks from being rosy.
As the for the no sex rule, most TDF teams believe that a wife, girlfriend, etc staying with or in the vicinity of the team brings bad luck. When Lance Armstrong brought Sheryl Crowe around with him in 2004 Tour, the other team members and team managers thought it would bring bad luck and warned Armstrong against it. Dr Michele Ferrari, Armstrong's trainer (and EPO advocate) thought that Crowe would give him the edge because she provided stability and support. As to if he obeyed the no sex rule....
Hindcapie is another rule breaker, he married a podium girl...

I have a mate who was riding without a helmet one day when he fell off, cracked his skull and ended up in hospital.
He's a vegetarian and the only food they could offer each day was cheese salad. After a week he was very "clogged up" and the moral of the story is: riding without a helmet makes you constipated!
