This guy is one of the most experienced riders I know, just goes to show... shit can happen. Without a helmet things could've been far worse.

Get fixed soon Andy!

Holy moly that would have been a shitty way to crash! Over the bars without any time to even react, apart from the 'Oh Shhhhh.......' sort of thing.
I think i should start wearing my lid more often, have gotten very lazy about actually putting it on.

Good story. Glad it turned out OK for him. I'd say that guys life has changed for the better. Not that it was probably bad or anything, but a near-death experience tends to make one appreciate life a little more.

As for people who don't wear a lid - that's just natural selection at work.

My lid saved my life once. High speed down hilll, road > stand up to put in a big power pedal > Worn drive train > chain skips.... MAJOR otb, flipped right over, land on back of head and shoulder, lid smashed into several pieces (as well as my clavicle).

Wear your lid kids!

I've destroyed (ie: large visible cracks) three helmets now by crashing. It's an expensive habit, but cheaper than not wearing them.

You'd be silly not to ride with one.

Depends how you define a helmet...some people like to believe a construction hardhat is a "helmet" when riding a bike.

We live on a steep hill on a blind turn in the road... its sort of on the way to the area where the dirt jumps are. The kids on their BMXs look out for a gap in the cars then peddle like mad to tear down the hill at pretty amazing speed... and they do this all without a helmet!!

I imagine there is a nice new helmet sitting at home in their room not being used for some reason like it isn't cool. Scary stuff.

heh, i don't need a reason - i have a constant reminder to wear a helmet because i don't have a dad as a result of a bike accident in the mid 80s...

i don't think i'd be able to ride a bike without a helmet, just as i couldn't snowboard or skate without one either...

After 4 years of snowboarding (only about 4 or 5 days a year) I've decided to get a helmet for next season. Can't believe I haven't already (probably a cost justification thing since I'd only use it a few days a year ... my own contribution to Darwinism), but hearing about a friend of a friend who was switched off a few months ago after a Northern Hemisphere ski accident left him brain dead, I figured it was time. A helmet would've saved his life.

...and check that your front wheel is securely attached to your fork.

Best wishes to Andy, his site has brightened my day many a time.

Its amazing that helmets are not enforced for snow sports either. Ive on more then one occation banged my head on ice and that wasnt even at speed...it was an awkward "ah crap Ive crossed my skis" moment while stationary! The speeds at which one travels are enough to do some serious damage...

Anyone remeber that story of the guy that fell off his bike and had the truck roll over his head? He survived with nothing but a scratch but his helmet obviously didnt.

The last bit of that story is so true though...

I know I hark on about kids doing tricks on their bikes and how they should 'wear a lid', ESPECIALLY when it is so shockingly glamorised as being the 'hip' thing.

My Mum would yell at me from the front door if I tried to sneak out without my lid, Catt would relay stories from the hospital of non-helmet wearers instilling fear, and looking back at pics of myself from my earlier courier days I wish someone would have given me the eye opener I've had now.

Even if you drop serious coin on a fancy schmancy helmet, it may be the cheapest second chance at life you'll get.

So next time you read 'wear a lid' on this site, it's because I love my friends, want them to be safe, and a helmet is the sole reason I'm still here, and not like Humpty Dumpty.

My mother's 'wear a helmet' scare story was actually of this girl she used to teach who reached down for her drink bottle while riding with not helmet...she slipped and ultimately, ended up with the brake cable in her brain. She is now a vegitable and cant walk anymore. (Just goes to show you, never drink and ride either!)

I grew up in the "helmet not compulsary" era and raced with the leather canoe type on track and road. I do NOT miss those times at all.
I remember seeing a guy slide "Breakdance 2 Electric Boogaloo" style on his head along the finishing straight at Inverell veledrome for aroung 30 odd metres in the very early 80's(around the Scott Sunderland Era). Ground his melon down a fair way, enough to see his brain so i recall. Since that day mom went out and bought us hard hats(cant remember the brand but not Rosebank LOL)
Since then I have ruined a multitude of helmets from crashes and am happy to say all brain injuries sustained are from too many cans not bike related at all.:D
Wear a lid people, let Darwinism be taken care of by Alabama and Louisiana
