View Full Version : Best Excuses?

I know it's late people but I was just wondering what excuses some of you have used for picking up a new rig? Today my personal stable has gotten back into double figures again and it's becoming harder to explain the rationale for needing so many bikes. Today I added a beautiful steel GT Peace 9'r to the collection, I got home from work rather late and had to explain the strange beast I was riding.
Wife. "What's That!"
Me. "Oh, you remember two years ago when I wanted a singlespeed 29 inch bike, well the backorder finally came through".
Wife. Silence:mad:

I want to know the best lines used on family or the significant other for your aquisitions, I'm fresh out.

Live out of home... no significant other.... I do what I want :D Not that my mum ever really cared, but if she ever asked, I went with old faithful "At least I'm not spending it on drugs..."

Drugs, nice.:) I haven't used that one yet, thankyou.

yup, drugs for me too. Or gambling and hookers...

I like to refer to gambling, drugs and hookers as the holy trinity.
Unfortunately the Mrs wouldn't believe that anyone would sleep with me, even for vast sums of money. Which says interesting things about her really.:)

Haha - if you're planning to keep those bikes I wouldn't let her see your last post. ;)

Just save up a bit more next time and buy her a nice gift when you bring the bike home. You can quickly grab it out of the car while she's not looking - won't even notice once it's in the pile.

Fatman, does your missus ride any of those bikes? Maybe she'd get a good grip on your reality if she threw a leg over one.;)
The back order came in............it sounds like it worked!

When I get a new toy I always say that it is a super special and you'd be nuts to let it slide. I often say that I don't need it right now but the old bike is starting to show signs of age and it would be cheaper to just get a new bike!
My fiance has chased me up the street plenty of times because I've told her a bit of a fib..............:o

Drugs for me too, beer in particular.

When I bought my Reign I said: "It's better than spending it on alcohol, and I'll only get wasted half the time".

Im only 16 so i dont need to explain to a wife just yet.

My mums a bit of a safty freak so i try to explain how much safer a new Bike would be. "Hydro brakes would stop me faster in an emergancy mum. And look....it comes with a bell"

I'm kind of fortunate in this respect because I don't need excuses. My other half only asks one question when I return with a new addition to the collection - "So when do *I* get to take it for a thrash?" We ride the same size frames.

"The back order came in." - LOL. That's feeling around the bottom of the nearly-empty excuse sack for sure!

i'm a repeat offender for doing this i'm always bringing goodies home for myself. When i spend money on the car it's " babe it really needs it,if i put a cheap part in it will break" she's cool with that, bikes is "well at least i didn't bring home another motor bike i can get fit" she just generally laughs at me.I think i have found a happy medium buy my toys buy her gifts it seems to work.

haha dude i use this one when im last to class, but you can change it round so its like this,

you saw an old lady slip on some ( mud, water, wet concrete ) and she spilt her shopping all over the road. you couldnt walk past something like that? she was like 70! so you helped her pick it all up and she turned out to be really rich and gave you a reward?

so you decided to treat your self and spent it on a new rig

also maybe when she asks how many youve got, tell her a few more than is true, that way when you bring a new one home you can say " count them theres the same number there was last time '' ;)

good luck

My parents stopped asking now... I think they just accepted that I'm going to put most of my money into bikes and are glad I'm not on drugs and hookers (yep that one a work out from me) and actually do something that makes me fit.

i have no probs because my other is always trying to scheme new bikes passed me!:)
i have a buddy who is not allowed to spend money on more bikes, he tells his wife that he has just painted one of his other bikes. ;)
guess you would need a moderately gullible wife.

I ordered a new bike today:) but it wasn't so much as making excuses for it, I'd like to think I put put forward a reasonable case which in the end (nearly 5 months on) she just had to say yes.

Ever since she got her license just over a year ago I've never got the car anymore:mad: so the bike will double as my commute to work.

there's always buying a pink bike or something similar, if you don't mind that. then drop the line : "i bought this one for you babe, so we could spend some more time together... *kiss*, *hug*, *tears of joy cause you are such a great husband*"...
how often will she ride it? means its yours the rest of the time right?

How do some of you guys do it? I dream about a stable of bikes! I have a very old roadie and my real bike (mtb). Admittedly a very nice bike, but when it comes to update/more money I've got nothin - used all the excuses long ago (and some of these in this thread wouldn't even come close to flying...).

Beg/plead/drop 'subtle' comments, thats where I'm at; it becomes like geology: time and pressure. It's a patience game...

I'm about 2 yrs from my next bike I reckon.

You want me to be safe don't you??

I tell my wife that my mates have catastrophic accidents as a result of equipment failure.

And as we all know, the only way to avoid catastrophic equipment failure is to always have new equipment.

mmm i used to have free reign, but now that we have shacked up together, and the bikes are in the living room, there has been a 3 rig limit put on the house. I am investigating storing bikes at other peoples places.....

Everytime I mention buying another bike, I get the "well, one of these other ones has to go...." :(

Today my personal stable has gotten back into double figures again and it's becoming harder to explain the rationale for needing so many bikes.

Do you need to justify the extra bike, the money used to purchase it or both?

I think my stable has reached a point where an extra ride could go largely unoticed (takes me a while to remember what I've got these days...), and I'm concentrating more on picking up retro parts these days so there's less of a money issue than getting new bikes (unless its something very special).

My better half also has 4 bikes herself (MTB x 2, Road and Fixie) so is a little more understanding than most. :)

Thank god i havent got to answer to any significant other at the moment, just the rents. But luckly, whenever i have needed a new bike(gone through 3 in 1.5 years), it has been because something has broken, like stripping threads in cranks, or getting hit by a car in the other case. Parts are a different story, but the good old "the old one is broken so i may as well upgrade while im at it" comes out quite often.

Only problem is then your mates will have to justify their bike collection...and the cycle continues ;)

mm i tried the couch, but with no luck. even hiding them in my office doesn't work. damn me for living in an apartment.

You could also upgrade your girl to a more understanding model... ;)

i have read about these "more understanding" women in travel & lifestyle magazines, but am lead to believe that they are mostly the fictional creation of magazine writers with little else to write about and too much time on their hands. whilst I have heard much talk about them, I have yet to see one in the wild...... :p

nah, my good lady is very understanding and puts up with more of my shite than I would care to publicly admit to. if left to my own devices, I would just start collecting bikes and never stop. the collection did get up to about 20 bikes at one stage (with only one of them actually working at any one time...) so i do need a good amount of discipline to keep it to just three, plus it means that I really have to put some thought into which three I am going to keep and why - that is a whole world of fun in itself. trying to create the perfect quiver of bikes. also, there are no restrictions on buying new bikes - it is just that I have to get rid of something else before I bring it into the house.

cheers,

al

edit: and no, she is not looking over my shoulder as I type this..... :D

Suggestion*:
Ask her if she counts as a "rig", and if so, are you allowed to have an extra bike while she's out of the house?

Acting upon this suggestion not advised.

Sooo many great excuses in this thread! Im only 16 and my mum is always on my back about spending money on bikes for parts or even building a new rig. So all i do is hide how much i paid for it and just say that i needed a new bmx/ downhill so i can become a better rider and more confident on a decent bike... usually works

buying her another bike makes it much easier to get another one for me. Fortunatly/unforunatly we are very different sizes.... although the solid little short travel rag bike might fit her.... must see if that one flies.

and sad as it is I go with the excited kid enthusiasim + puppy dog eyes .... oh and it helps to have a reason, like my bikes too heavy and giving it to her to lift...

and I am not too sure if I am comfortable with her reading this...

That is until you come off and smash you mouth up pretty bad. I suppose by then you've already got the bike so it doesn't matter.
