Depends on what kind of riding you're talking about.

Usually good = more power when pedalling
Bad = stacks can get interesting when you're attached to the bike

good- pedaling, jumping, bumping over rocks, rocky corners.
Bad- Cornering, stacks although when you're used to them it don't hapen too often and clipping-in takes a while.

Oh, do a search michael ;)

For xc they are the go, much faster in all areas it just takes a little bit of getting used too. then when you ride a bike without them i always end up jumping of the pedals as im used to the clips.

They are used by all the 4x people i know and some DH guys aswell.

I dont think sam hill uses them and his just a little bit fast.

also befor people start flaming you for useing 'MSN' or 'SMS' lauange i would suggest that you at least try to write properly. i always try but i cant spell..:D

They're bad, if you crash you fully get smashed up heckers as.

It's been covered many a time.

+'s Pedalling, bike control.

-'s Lose time clipping back in when you unclip.

if ur like me and do massive hucks all the time ull want flat pedals cause there easier to bail from. i also hit up all local trails with ease doing all the major jumps.
i would choose flat pedals if i was u!!!!

What sort of riding do you do? Have a go at them still.

Cross Country i think it is essential to use them. It really does help & when you have nailed the feel for them it'll just become normal.

For downhill it can be a little weird at first but once you get a good feel for them they are great. After coming off the XC bike onto running them on the DH bike it made life a little easier to get used to them though.

Try clips, if you don't like them you can always go back to flats.

I'm running clips for DH/XC & loving them.

I think it's all about personal preference. Sure, they pose a fair few cons but I believe they only really make a difference at a rather skilled level.

If your shit don't make it any harder on yourself - ride flats.

Cross Country i think it is essential to use them.

While Im inclined to agree with that, I used flats for a long time for XC (working up confidance to get back on clips after a nasty crash)...the pain was that they were bulky and heavy but meant you could tackle harder terrain without fearing you would stack and not be able to get out...

If you want the best of both worlds, got for say the DX clip-style pedal which is essentially a cage with a clip section in the centre...

Thanks for that wonderful insight.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I like clipless for both DH and XC, I like the fact that I don't have to don anything to keep my feet in the sweet spot on the pedal.
Never had an issue of getting out of them when I needed to but have lost a pedal or two in a race trying to reclip after an unexpected dab.

For hucks you'll probably find the hold you foot too far back so are a bit harsh on you ankles.

For Dirt Jumping you want to use flats.

But there are so many threads on this already, do a search and take everything with a grain of salt the majority of people that argue one way or the other haven't actually tried the other themselves... At the end of the day it comes down to personal preference

Have another read of the rules bucko......Don't use SMS crap on here! You have a keyboard of the full alphabet so use it. There is no excuse......

On topic: I use clips for when I have to pedal for a purpose. By that I mean I use them for XC and commuting only. I have tried using them for DH and mountain cross but I prefer the full contact feel of flats for the rougher stuff.
I've always heard about these infamous "crashes while wearing clips" stories and how bad they are but seriously, no crash is good regardless of what pedals you have...........

My old saying: "clips for up, flats for down".;)

i dont know why people go on so much about them being really hard to use, they arnt that hard to clip out of, most people who say they are probably havnt used them or dont know how to use and maintain them well enough.

And i think that they are alot easier to use on "harder terrain" as you are at one with the bike and your feet are going to stay planted and not slip off.

Just my opinion

clips are good when your an advanced rider with no problems at all.

i use them for dh/4x/road/bmx and xc they make a big difference in power and i find them good because your feet dont fall of the pedals through rough sections. i find i can corner better as well and as for stack i always find that when i crash i always unclip never had a problem.

i use nothing but shimano pedals as i like there reliability and there float is handy for my stupid knees i use dx pedals for dh, 4x and bmx i use xt pedals for xc and shimano ultegras for road.

the other thing is to make sure you get good shoes and make sure there a snug fit so they dont move around on your feet.

i have shimano shoes as they make a wide version.

I use Eggbeaters on the XC and commuter bikes and Mallets on the AM and DH bikes. I use the same shoes (Adidas Hematomas (sp?)) for everything. I have only had two crashes caused by clipless, one on a slippery up hill and another on a dusty downhill corner. Both were within 2 weeks of starting on clipless. In no high speed crash have I ever stayed attached to the bike, or felt it was worse because of clips, indeed I feel that I have avoided crashes due to them.
I like the feeling of being "attached" to the bike. It gives me another way of controlling it, I guess.

This question has no right answer it is PERSONAL preferance. You just gotta give them a go. Use them for a litte bit until you get confident with them. They do good things sometimes.

i have both.. clipless pedals are better for pedal efficiancy, but take alot of practice.

If you need to pedal, you need clipless.

If you crash, you are going to get farked up either way.

Clipless takes about 5 minutes to learn, you will probably crash two or three times as you learn how to get your feet out, but then it becomes natural.

plus and minuses have been cothered but if the only reason you want them is to stop your feet slipping off just get some decent pedals (crankbrothers 5050, funn sole jam, etc) and set of 5 10s and your feet will nearly never slip off...hope that helped:)

I'd give the Clipless pedals a go. I got the shimano ones that have both a flat pedal base and clip in the middle. This is a good way to learn as you can unclip when you dont feel confident and then reclip to utilise the extra power up hills.
I now do all my riding in clips and i feel much more confident clipped in than not. I also havent had an issue unclipping during (or generally just before) a crash.
Expect to look stupid a couple of times though. I was riding the BMX track at St Ives with my Fiance (a very inexperienced rider) a while back and went to stop beside her at the top of the table top jump and started telling her how good I was, and then I lent the wrong way and fell on the side I hadn't unclipped. I slid half way down the jump upside down with my foot still clipped in under the bike. It took about a minute to work out the physics of how to unclip in that position. I think my missus laughed for about another 10 minutes, until I reminded her of who was driving home.
