for those who missed the press release. 7-9 March 2008. 3 day music and gravity sport festival. We are running Dual Slalmon. Jump Comp. Trials demo and an invitation only on road down hill.
I was lucky enough to do a test on the road to day.
Picture this, if you will...
It's a glorious day. It's Mt Panorama. It's closed to traffic and you've got the descent to yourself.
Yeeeoooww. That's what I had today, well me and six Down hill Skaters.
These guys have my full respect, they're friggen nuts!
They were trying to figure out how far up the mt the could start and still get around Forest elbow.
2 or 3 tests from lower down and they were at the top with me starting from holden corner.
I was on my XC bike, knobby tyres at about 25 psi and 42T big ring.
Run 1. I give them a start as I fuggured I have brakes so if I catch them it's no big deal but if I go first and they catch me I could stuff them up.
Caught the back runners down through the essess. TV just does not show how steep this bit is, even with the dipper ironed out in recent years it's fun.
Break check into forest elbow and try and catch the front runners. Not a chance in hell... Once they were tucked I could stay with them but with out more gears that was it.
Ride back to the top as they load into the van
Run 2. Same. Give them a bit more of a start, didn't want to be putting the new guy off through the dipper. Hit it nicely sit up but stay off the brakes through Forest Elbow. Around tail enders with front runners in site. Average cadence? 129rmp. Speed 86km/hr. Man I wish I thought to put a 52t ring on. Still fail to over take front runners.
ride back to top
Run 3. loan Garmin to one of the skaters. Repete drill.....
Go for lunch
Break out DH bike and play around of the slope proposed for Dual Slalom. Have fun. Scratch in a bit of a rough track.
Get the XC bike out for one more run.
Give skaters a bit more of a start and pedal like mad. Come into forest Elbow nice but hit the anchors as two skaters tangle in the hale bales. They look alright so hook on pass.
Yeeeoooww.
Skaters are ok. First has a corked thigh from where the second guys board hit him but that's it.
Did I mention these guys are standing up? On their hands some have old gardening gloves with bits of plastic glued to the palm so the can put the hands down and slide around the corners. they are truely crazy.
No street luges today but they are expected to punch 100-115km/hr. Bloody el!

http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/4495384
This is going to be huge. Fuel TV is going a 1hr special on it. Camping, Bar, live bands, DJ. World Cup street luge, the skaters, us. Wake boarding, parachuter, swooping and wing suit flying down the face of the mountain...
Entries open next week. band line up about to be announced.
Stay Tuned

Grinspoon ready to Rock Mount Panorama!
An all Australian music lineup is set to take to the Skyline Stage on both days of Newton’s Playground – Mount Panorama’s gravity fuelled festival March 7-9 2008, headlined by hard rocking group Grinspoon.
Enormously popular and a perfect band fit for an adrenaline charged, gravity fuelled weekend, Grinspoon will play all their classics including It’s a Hard Act to Follow, Thrills, Kills and Sunday Pills, Champion, Lost Control and Chemical Heart as well as hits from their new album including What You Got and Black Tattoo and Alibis and Other Lies.
“Grinspoon are enjoying a strong following in the festival scene and having them headline our event seemed like a natural fit, ” said Newton’s Playground Event Director, Simon Rollin.
“Add to that some of the hottest Aussie bands of the moment Gyroscope, Urthboy, Kid Kenobi and MM9 - Many Machines on Nine all confirmed to take centre stage during the weekend alongside some of the country’s biggest up and coming new talent including Tonk, Bowser, Switch 3, The Funky Punks, Chaos Math and electro-breakbeat DJ James Taylor.
“We have split stage performances over the Saturday and Sunday of the Festival to ensure Newton’s Playground remains fully charged all weekend. We think spectators will get a pleasant surprise at our ticket prices given the standard of high adrenalin sporting action and live music on offer – it’s great value,” Rollin said.
The live music event backs up a massive variety of competitive and demonstrative gravity fuelled extreme sports across Saturday 8th March & Sunday 9th March 2008. On-track disciplines include street luge, speedboarding, slalom skateboarding and gravity bikes while off-track disciplines feature the BMX Big Air Dirt Dance, Mountain Bike Dual Slalom and a Skate Miniramp Jam. Meanwhile, overhead, Swooping and Wingsuit Flying demonstrations will be taking place above the festival site.
By the time Newton’s Playground opens in March, Gyroscope will have played their typically highly charged performances in front of sell-out crowds across Australia on their Snakeskin single tour, and will launch the band’s new album Breed Obsession at Bathurst after performing at the sold out Big Day Out.
More mountain moving sounds will come from Aussie hip hop legend, Urthboy, whose recent album release, The Signal, shows Urthboy’s deserved reputation as an MC and a unique songwriting talent. Hailing from the Blue Mountains in NSW, Urthboy has also enjoyed success as co-founder of one of the premier hip hop bands in the country, The Herd.
Joining Urthboy on the Sunday of Newton’s Playground will be arguably Australia’s # 1 DJ, Kid Kenobi, who has topped Australia’s premier DJ poll – TechnicsInTheMix 50 three years running from 2003-2005. Since then Kid Kenobi has had a number of releases including Ministry of Sound compilations, internationally renowned remixes and his debut original release "The Bump" which was nominated for an ARIA award for Best Dance Release this year. Kenobi will be joined on stage by MC Shureshock.
The electric sounds of DJ’s the Funky Punks will also make their much anticipated return to Bathurst after having been voted best act of the 2007 Charles Sturt University Village Fair.
Newton’s Playground will also feature a handful of local acts including The References with more soon to be announced. Additionally, the festival is supporting a new initiative of the Mitchell Conservatorium called the Living Sound Festival. This Festival seeks to ‘unearth’ hip hop talent from secondary schools in the region with the finalists getting their chance to perform on Skyline Stage as support acts to successful local hip hop group, Chaos Maths.
“Incorporating the Living Sound Festival finalists into Newton’s Playground was a way in which we could support local youth initiatives and encourage them to pursue their goals” said Rollin said.
Both Triple J and subscription music station Channel [V] have thrown their support behind Newton’s Playground having both confirmed their involvement today.
Tickets for Newton’s Playground go on sale Monday 3rd December 2007 from Moshtix with a special release of 2,000 festival passes available at a special early bird/pre-Christmas price.

Human Gliders to tackle the Mount
Have you ever wondered what it would be like if humans could fly?
The hallmark of Australian racing, the V8s, are set to be replaced by V2s at Newton’s Playground, Mount Panorama’s gravity fuelled festival March 7-9th 2008, headlined by hard rocking group Grinspoon.
The V2, or Vampire 2, is a state of the art wingsuit which shapes the human body into an airfoil with fabric sewn between the legs and under the arms. It is also called a birdman suit or squirrel suit and allows skydivers and BASE jumpers to fly long distances while gliding through the air, reaching speeds of over 100km per hour.
“Greek mythology and the stories of Daedalus and Icarus remind us that people have been fascinated by human flight for centuries. Wingsuit flying is the closest we’ve come so far to natural unpowered flight,” said wingsuit pilot Dallas Rogers.
The wingsuit flier wears parachute equipment designed for skydiving or BASE jumping. The flier will deploy the parachute at a planned altitude and unzip the arm wings so they can reach up to the parachute control toggles and fly to a normal skydiving or BASE jumping landing.
But wingsuit flying is not for the faint hearted. Event Director Simon Rollin believes the sheer sight of these guys gliding through the air will send a chill up your spine while at the same time simply amaze. “The sight of five bird like humans flying over Mount Panorama will have to be seen to be believed,” he said.
The wingsuit pilots will be flying over the Newtons Playground Festival five times each day with smoke trailing before deploying their parachutes and landing on Conrod Straight in full view of festival goers.
The festival will also feature another airsport called Swooping or otherwise known as Canopy Piloting. Swooping, at its core, is a more extreme form of skydiving. The point of swooping, however, is not just to parachute down from a plane and make a good landing. Instead, the swooper wants to swoop over the ground gracefully, prior to landing. Often, this is done over a lake or other body of water. At Newton’s Playground, the Swooping will take place over a large gravel trap situated at the part of the circuit known as ‘the Chase’.
These airsports will take place in amongst a host of other gravity fuelled sporting disciplines and a live music concert in what will be one of the most unique festivals in Australia.
Tickets are now on-sale for Newton’s Playground exclusively through Moshtix. Interested spectators can purchase online, by phone or through any Moshtix outlet. All event & ticketing information can be found online at www.newtonsplayground.com.au
Spectators are encouraged to book early as there is a strictly limited capacity.
Newton’s Playground is on 7th – 9th March, 2008 at Mount Panorama, Bathurst.

Action-packed International event set to sell out as
ticket sales surge
Mount Panorama in Bathurst is getting set to host the first International Gravity Sports Association (IGSA) World Cup event ever held in Australia and with just over four weeks to go, tickets to the event are in hot demand!
Already, thousands of extreme gravity sports goers have paid interest in Newton’s Playground and so event organisers are urging all keen spectators to act quickly and buy their tickets now to avoid missing out.
“We’ve had an overwhelming response to the sale of tickets to Newton’s Playground so far. It’s hardly surprising though as for under a hundred bucks [for a weekend], spectators can experience a level of entertainment unrivalled at any other festival in Australia,” says Event Director, Simon Rollin.
“This truly is a unique event with some of the world’s best gravity riders and Australia’s top music artists all heading to Bathurst,” he added.
With World Cup Street Luge, World Cup Gravity Bike, Buttboard, Giant Slalom, Hybrid Slalom, Freestyle Skateboard Sliding, Carveboard and Downhill In-line, not to mention Skate Miniramp Jam, the Southern Cross Mountain Bike Dual Slalom, Mountain Bike Trials and Swooping, Newton’s Playground will be a dream come true for all extreme sports devotees.
Scattered throughout the whole weekend will be a huge all-Australian live music lineup playing on the main “Skyline Stage”. Headline act Grinspoon, whose recent single “Black Tattoo” came in at #73 on Triple J’s Hottest 100, will be supported by Big Day Out crowd favourites Gyroscope (single “Snakeskin” scored #16 on the Hottest 100), Urthboy (#25 on Hottest 100 with “We get around”), Kid Kenobi, the Funky Punks, Tonk and many more.
Tandem skydives will also be available through Skydive Oz who will be set up amongst the Newton’s Playground Industry Village, which is an area dedicated to businesses or clubs specialising in extreme sports products or services. Thrillseekers will also be able to get their fix on the Drop Zone experience which is a freefall simulator, a 90 metre Flying Fox or a multi skill level climbing wall.
Accommodation in Bathurst for Newton’s Playground is extremely tight, however organisers have opened up an extra camping area on top of Mount Panorama and are urging people requiring a bed to consider pitching a tent or hiring a tent-city tent.
Festival tickets, camping passes, tent city tents & tandem skydives are still on-sale for Newton’s Playground exclusively through Moshtix. Interested spectators can purchase online (www.moshtix.com.au), by phone (1300 GET TIX (1300 438 849)) or through any Moshtix outlet.
Tickets will only be available at the gate if not sold out prior so spectators are encouraged to book early to avoid disappointment.
All event & ticketing information can be found online at: www.newtonsplayground.com.au

OHHHHHHH YEAH!!!! Im sooo there...
Hi a couple of questions.
Entry is $50 is that for both days racing?
What womens categories are on offer I was under the impression there was going to be Junior Women and Vets Women for the series as they were trying to get more riders. The entry form has only U19 and Elite are more classes going to be offered?
Thanks

$50 1 day
$70 both days.
As for categories, those were the ones I was given as we struggled to fill those in MtnX last year.
However, I just spoke to steve and we will record ages and if it warrents will expand for series and later rounds.

We got the DS tracks sorted today and the boys had a great time test running it.
lead changes all the way down...
It's got fast berms, tight berms, flat corners, off camber drifty corners, little rocks.... It looks mighty fun and should make for great spectating
The only jumps are a small set of moguls at the very end, about 1 foot high. The good guys should be able to nail the last corner and double, pump single or Pump single double. Guys like me will be able to just pump through them.
It's going to be a hoot.
I got a little bit of crap vid on my phone as I forgot to take the camera, will post later.

"BMX ‘KING OF THE HILL’ HEADS TO NEWTON’S PLAYGROUND
The cream of Australian BMX talent are heading to Bathurst on the 7th – 9th March to battle it out for honours & cash prizemoney in the Newton's Playground BMX Big Air Dirt Dance.
Fresh from the BMX Games held at Homebush in January the Newton’s Playground professional competitor field reads like a who’s who of the sport with Cam Pianta (VIC), Dane Searls (NSW), Josh Stead (NSW), Jaie Toohey (NSW), Andrew Gul (VIC), Brendan Jones (NSW), Niki Buckard (QLD) and Josh Mete (VIC) heading the list.
Hailing from NSW’s Central Coast, Dane Searls, age 19, is recognised within the industry as Australia’s leading dirt jumper and took out the title of “King of the Hill” at Cam White’s Dirt Jam recently staged in Canberra. Searls, who is no stranger to launching himself 30 foot in the air to perform his tricks on any given day, is looking forward to the Newton’s Playground challeng
Riders will roll-in to the first kicker from a 6m high scaffold ramp and onto a purpose built dirt jump course shaped into existence using 350 tonnes of freshly dumped soil. While these guys are professional riders they are certainly not immune to their fair share of stacks as they push the limit of what they can do in the air.
Young 17 year old Jaie Toohey is another rider following in the footsteps of great Aussie riders before him such as Ryan Guettler & Corey Bowen, and going on his form at the recent BMX games he is odds on to end Newton’s with a podium finish.
In addition to the pro-comp there is also an amateur competition for all up & comers who may feel they have something to show but not quite at the top level. Quality prizes are on offer kindly donated by Backbone BMX and a large field of riders is expected.
The BMX Big Air Dirt Dance is one of a host of other gravity fuelled sporting disciplines featuring at Newton’s Playground."
