View Full Version : DH shoes. Five Ten vs Rivers shoes

Hey everybody. After seeing the post about how the "Five Ten" shoe's sole went in under 3 months I went looking at Five-Ten's at my LBS and they were $170. I not saying they are expencive but there are shoes out there just as good or better that stand up to the "Five-Ten". I just bought these "Rivers" shoes for 40 bucks and they feel just as good or even better than the "Five-Ten", so if you have a cheaper, better or just as good shoe as a "Five-Ten" post it up! (maybe a pic of the sole if you can)

Is the sole still as grippy as stealth rubber? I personally wear my 5/10's everywhere as they are easily the most comfortable shoe I have ever worn!! Seriously! I've had mine for about a year and they are absolutely great. Not as great as clipless though..

The sole is sick. I find that five ten's really wear out quickly.
I find that five ten's really wear out quickly.
Not for me. Nothings got more grip than 5-10's. I've had mine for almost a year now and there has been very little wear and they are still as grippy as they were when I first got them.
If you think theres just as much grip with the rivers then you might need to consider the grip on your pedals.

I've worn my 510s pretty much every wear, every day for about 12 months now. The sole is just worn out now. As well as riding they been a great shoe for scrambling up the mountain side for trail maintenance.
i dont get it have you ever used five tens or are you just saying this because they look similar to those river shoes because i just puirchased a pair and i have never ridden anything as beautiful as them they just give you so much grip on the pedals. so can you explain a bit more:)

I worn five-tens before. Yes there are beautiful shoe for riding but you can get just as good cheaper. The five-ten will probley still remain the best shoe I've ridden on but the river shoe comes very close to it.

I also wear 5-10 shoes but not the impact range. I have a pair of "guide tennie" approach shoes... cuz I can get them at cost price from my work. Even if the Rivers are not quite as good, for $40 they are less than a quarter the price of Impacts and less than half of the cost price I am paying for the Tennies... so I'd say that at least makes them worthy of considering :)
you can get shoes which are the same as 5-10s but under a different brand and they are heaps cheaper they have the stealth rubber, you can find them in hiking type stores.

Shimano M66 DX boots ($ 100.00) and a second hand bash guard ($25) Clipped in or flats , best $ I have spent on MTB shoes :).

That's because they are based off rock climbing shoes. They need to be soft to grip on to things as well as possible, but that comes at a durability cost. If I rode flats I think I would use them only as a riding shoe.

Most people do. I dont know why people wear $170 riding shoes to go to the shops.

I think I'll be sticking to my 5-10's thanks. I doubt that the rivers shoes would be as good seeing as rivers is a fashion brand, and 5-10 have been in the outdoor / climbing industry for a very long time. The soles may look similar, but I doubt that the rubber would be of the same quality and stickiness as 5-10's stealth rubber. Also, the raptor tongue that 5-10's have make them some of the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned.
I've had my pair for about a year, and they are showing signs of wear, but they are by no means worn out. I only wear them for riding, and when I bought them, the guy told me that they would probably wear out quicker if I wore them walking around the place (foot paths etc).
I don't feel the price is excessive, most people wouldn't think twice about spending that kind of money on a pair of running shoes or basket ball boots.

Another good point to make about "shoe performance" for riding
is toe protection. I have used vans for years and always quite
liked the grip factor, but i clipped a stump a couple of weeks ago
and the result wasn't real flash. I like the beefed up toe area
on shoes like the 5-10 and think the overall build of them is pretty
solid. Did anyone see the article in dirt mag about the guys who
re-sole any shoe with stealth rubber? not cheap but cool option.

You used to be able to get the 5ten MTN master re soled. I think the guy still can do some types of shoes in the stealth rubber, but there was a catch, can't remember what.
i think the price is quite reasonable i shelled out about 250 dollars for my shimano road shoes although they were custom fitted.
i would buy a pair hat of 5-10 for that price if i used flat pedal so i use shimano dx shoes which were about 150 dollars.

5-10's are great, however, I have also been using a pair of shoes from rivers for over 12 months and have found them extremely grippy, far gripper than any other skate style shoes i have tried, a little too much at times, it take a completely deliberate lifting of the shoe to move it on my pedals (soljams) I back them as a cheap alternative that have also lasted at least 12 months.

This is like IronHorse (5.10s) Vs Huffy (rivers)...
Its obvious which one is better.

he pretty much hit it on the head!
Favourite shoes i own, are my 5-10's they arent ugly like the rivers shoes, so i dont feel like a dick wearing them out, to the shops and so forth, and they grip like nothing else, they also are tough, the amount of times i put my foot out in corners and stuff, and no sign of wear on them!
best 170 spent
when i was rock climbing alot in the UK and europe i'd get Scarpa shoes (because they had the perfect fit for my foot) and stright up resole them with 5.10 stealth rubber, i found steath to about the same a the Vibram Rock shoe specific rubber but seem to be grippyer when they had dirt on them.
that said i had a set of 5.10 tennies climbing/approch shoes that de-soled in a week (i got a warranty on them though which was good CS)
Now if Scarpa would just make mtb shoe i'd be a happy man (i love my Scarpa Frenzy XTs with a grivel crampons, ice climb-a-lisous)

Ty, I had a very different experience. I got a pair of tennies to replace my Mtn Masters. I've been wearing them for over a year and they're doing fine. Not as grippy and not as comfy though. You must have scored a manuf fault.

yeah thats what alot of people said, my climbing partners give them nothing but love, the shop I got them through refunded the warantied shoes and i got some montrail CTCs, slightly less climby but a bit more friendly to walk any distance in (tennies do have that cool "I'm a climber" look to them though).

I like 5-10's i don't mind forking out the money for them either.(despite the discount, kinda bragging,i know).I use to use 5-10 for rock climbing too, that's what attracted me to them for riding.

Hey m8.

They always do a fine job and cost less then a lot of MTB shoes.
Just go to ur local surf shop and they can hook you up.
Mine have lasted me 2 years now.

ive had my 5-10's for about 6 months.i wear them everyday.i wear them at work too.i wouldnt wear anything else.they are great for walking the bike up steep stuff and they just feel solid.i had a pair of rivers shoes when i first started.they were not as solid as the ones shown but they only lasted 3 weeks.i would have no probs giving the rivers a go but i figure $170 every 18 months is good value for anything in this sport under so much preasure.

I just laughed so hard i nearly fell of the chair. Hiking boots are not mountainbike shoes- not even close. But yes, by claiming that Five 10s are expensive, you can take pride in knowing that you've won the tightarse of the year award.

Owned, haha.
He has a point though, and I seriously doubt those Rivers shoes would stand up to 5-10's. IMO this thread's a bit of a waste of time and you're not gonna find anything that's really gonna come close that's just designed for general walking around.
BTW, to the guy who posted this, the design of the sole of the shoe is not really the main thing in this, it's the stuff it's made off. 5-10's have nice and soft rubber that grips very well because of the manufacturer's background in rock climbing shoes. Rivers definitely don't have the know how to produce anything up to 5-10's standard.
Ha Ha Daver, $170 is not cheap for shoes!
I have 510's, got them in Canada where they retail for $95.
You can get them re-soled as NSM said, my mate just got his done here http://www.bigjohn.com.au/ or as an alternative you can get the 510 stealth rubber applied to the bottom of your favourite skate shoe, hiking shoe, thongs or whatever you like.
I've had my 510's for about 6 months now without any real wear, can imagine they'll last a good 12 or more months quite easily.
Also buy them from climbing stores and you'll do a lot better than $170...in saying that I got mine from a bike store for $120 and most places have them on shelf at $150.

I wouldn't trade my five tens for any of the rivers range, not even the fetching brogues. I'm pretty hard on shoes and have worn these things pretty much constantly for six months, when I ride flatties I wouldn't use anything else. As for the tight arse question, 170 squid for shoes is still a lot if you have no brass at all.

considering the amount a good skate shoe costs these days, 100 is the minimum youll be paying really and then they just dont stand up in comparison

MEC aparently had the old design on sale recently for $55. I missed out and had to get the new ones for $95 as well.
I had to hike a bike in snow today. Those things grip any surface.

I was just trying to make the point, if you have no cash $170 is still a lot. As Daver said it is all relative. I saw the price of five tens as good value and purchased, as a matter of fact I'm heading up to Hornsby R'e in them right now. Mountain bike shoes you can wear to the rissole, gotta love that.

skate shoes are way too soft, the pedal pins chew holes in them in a few months, a proper BMX shoe like an Orchid or a Lotek will last 3-4 times longer and only cost an extra $30.

2 years? What shoe are you sporting?
I buy Etnies but they last 6 months tops before they are in "to shite to ride in" condition. They serve the rest of their life as gardening/work shoes.
I WILL be buying some 5/10's for my christmas present. One pair of these for 12 months is now cheaper than 2 pairs of skatey's........and who the hell drove the price of new skate shoes up to the 120-150 mark?

rivers are the go ,on a buget who needs the bling mine lasted more than 2 years and ive updated got two new pairs cc rivers and dh rivers only thing is there made overseas now, orignals were made local but new ones seem durable and well worth your $35.00
just because something lasts for ever doesn't mean it's good, somethings, like rubber, need to be soft and to do the job they are meant to do, ie, grip to stuff. That said a line has to be drawn between performance and durability.
anyone remember IRC Kujos? those things would last like 2 seasons, but it doesn't mean they were good.

If I ever see someone at the Hornsby RSL wearing 5.10s I'm going to call out "Hey Fatman!". I hope it's you. Low tops or high tops?
I'll start this off by saying I don't race, so may not necessarily be as hard on my shoes as the rest of you lot. In saying that though, I do ride a hardtail for all types of riding, including DH through rocky shite, and I've never had a problem with the shoes i wear - Asics gel Kayano cross trainers. They grip like nothing I've ever tried (even on wet rock climbing mount warning, and wet roots walking through Springbrook and up at Tambourine), and after four years of wearing them walking, to Uni, riding, wearing them pretty much every day for everything they're only just giving up the ghost now. Even as worn as they are (the tread's gone around the ball of the foot, just down to soft rubber) they're still the best I've ever tried, for anything from running to riding and beyond.

I ride DCs and they have awesome grip, look alright and are real comfortable.
Had them for a year and wore them for going out, and for the last year they have just been my shit kickin shoes that i wear riding every day, digging, at work and whatever. The top part of the shoe has no stitching breaks, the double stitching is awesome. The sole is in pretty good condition aswel, and they cost about $60 less than 5-10s.
Deffinately stood the durablity test and have sweet grip (You could probably get thongs to grip good to soljam vipers though).

i would go five tens over any shoes inless your riding xc, if you have a good peddal and five tens your feet will not come off the paddals, they are a bit on the expensive side but well worth it.
all my mates who used to use regular skate shoes thought they had awesome grip until they got five tens, when they relised that comments i made saying your foot NEVER moved and it was like clips grip wise were actually true, they are never going anything else now

Have you looked into Helly Hansen's Jaeger shoes? They aren't as clunky as some other suggestions and have some nice features. I thought my pair was really comfortable and held on to a variety of pedals really well.
