EDIT: The current incarnation of these bikes is on the second page, the Ojiki has moved on to greener pastures

Here's an update on my bikes

Sunday - Teams, 823s and tubeless 2.5 minions, bit of a black and pink theme going on the pedals and bar ends. I've got some mg-1s coming in the mail to have a go at, its around 19kgs

Cannondale f4 - stockers pretty much, other than the obligatory lock on grips. entry level bikes are getting really good! I'm not really into xc, but you can't always organise shuttles. The lockout is awesome, its pretty quick for me and it comes in at 12ish kgs

And this is my spare bike, I use it to take beginners riding to save our other bikes. its hell fun to ride itself anyway. 05 Iron Horse Yakuza Ojiki. Its for sale too
Moved in with some other riders too, so theses share the garage with a stinky and a glory

He has gone for the 'melbourne' look. Many folk round here have the same setup (probably because they don't actually know what a fixie is).

But who can complain for $20?

yeah they really should ditch the brake and go fixed gear and get the "hipster look"

its a $20 bike! it only has a front brake because the pads on the old one are shot. the brakes, in fact the whole bike is older than most 'hipsters' on this forum.

The idea came from that make magazine podcast, under the title 'things to fill in a weekend' or something similar, not 'things to get mad cred on internet forums'. I only ride it to uni because its cheaper than driving and too far to walk! and before i rode it, the last time it was ridden regularly was to get my dad to uni in the late 70's!

posted up some new pics of my bikes.
Haven't had a problem at all with the 50:50s, locktited the pins when i got them (just to fuel the love vs hate war people have with them and their pins). I've put a long pin kit in as well, so every hole is taken - they're very sticky now. They also RUIN your legs if you cop them without shinnies on.

I love riding the cannondale so much i even went to the darkside and bought some knicks... Got it just before christmas. Thanks winning edge in Bathurst!

I've been hitting this log over and over again, and I rarely use my outer ring, so after i got my gripshifters i decided to have a go at 2x9 without the outer ring. I figured these ratios would be pretty weak with only the middle and inner ring (which i also rarely use - as a challenge more than anything) so i put on a 11-26 cassette on the back, which happened to be 100g lighter than the crappy shimano one this bike came with

Anyway - here are some picks of the new shifters, fatter rogue lock-ons (so much better) and the 2x9 set up

Hrm.. AN interesting 2x9 set up you have there. Make your you come back after a week or so and report to us or me. on how it went.

I was planning to keep with the 11-32 rear and a 28-34 up the front.

How is the grip shift on first impressions ? Does it need alot of torque to shift gears or more of a general twist -click -shift . I am quite against gripshifting i have this idea i might shift gears without wanting to when getting the front end up and over. Is that a problem for you?

Anywho hope it works and make sure to report back. :)

Yeah - it is a weird set up, but the idea just came to me so i thought i'd give it a go. I was originally planning on doing it properly with 28 or 29 and 40ish set up but i would have had to buy new cranks it seems, so when i realised i had this cassette spare the idea came to me. If it works it should be great - a lot more clearance at the front, but not as much speed for the road ride there and back.

The gripshifters are great - accidentally shifting gears isn't a problem at all - the action is very positive, but does take a deliberate action to change. The speed of the change is awesome too.
I've been meaning to get a set for a few years now after riding it on another guy's bike - but i kept putting it off. It was definitely worth the change in my opinion. Then again, my riding buddy thinks its crap - he really prefers shimano's new system with the dual release (or whatever their terminology is). I think grippers are faster, offer a greater number of changes in a shift (you could dump the whole cassette if your derailleur could keep up) and leave your bars less cluttered and a your hands less inhibited.

Back from my test ride - here is what i think
just for background - i'm 183cm and 105kg, so i'm no cross country whippet. My rugby shorts look a lot better on me than my lycra. And i usually ride "downhiller's" cross country - as fast as i can for about an hour to 90 minutes.
1: Its great for the track i ride regularly, which is mainly pinch climbs and short sharp descents over and over again.
2: the longest ascent on the course is 2 hills about 200m long each right after another which is comfortable to do fresh in 22x34 and doable in 32x34, but really a granny gear affair if you're stuffed. I found this set up doable, and i reckon i could do it stuffed too in the 22x26.
3: 2speed grip shift is great fun. the whole setup takes a lot of thinking out of an already simple situation.
4: Top speed is lame compared to 44x11, but thats not a big deal if you're just out trail riding

I don't think i'd choose a set of gears similar to this for rides any longer than 2hrs - just because the fatigue would be more bearable with a more sissy gear. But for everything else in 'Australian conditions' (short, but steep as pinch climbs and long lazy ascents) I think its sweet as.
Definitely feels a lot more rocket fuel than diesel powered.
