[UPDATE]
Im now running an 8spd Shimano Alfine Hub in the back, and a Rockshox Reba Race Fork on the front! Im very happy with the way the Alfine runs... I stinged out on getting a Rohloff simply because of the cost, and the fact that im off to Nepal in four weeks to climb some mountains. Im noticibly faster with a suspension fork on the front, it also makes a huge difference to how I feel at the end of the day! I do not notice the weight difference of the bike, even going up steep hills. I guess having the choice of a better ratio, and better traction up front, makes up for the 1.7kg weight gain to a rigid 29er (still ~12.6kg).

The J-Hawk collage never took off unfortunately, I couldnt get enough different pictures in the right sizes. But look out for my "newspaper" theme collage/paintjob in the next few months!

29er is still the future!
Let the good times roll.

That thing is beautiful Alex, strangely well proportioned in such a large frame. One of the nicest 29'rs I've ever seen.

First impressions were tidy and it looks so in proportion for a 29er.

Im actually suprised by how light it is seeing as its alot bigger!

BB5's or BB7's?

Nice!
It really does look like a scale up of a 26'', not a 26'' frame with monster wheels

I cycled this rig today for a bit... it is magical!

Relax... the Thomson gear is in the mail... That will only make 14 items from the Thomson factory!

Sam: BB7s... havent got them bedded in yet though!
Lebron: The J-Hawk is all on. Im collecting Jen pictures as we speak! In the mean time i need to save up enough $$$ and pictures to cover the lowers of a F29 Fork! :p

That looks great. I certainly didn't think it looked like a 29er with that size frame!

There was a review on the Salsa El Mariachi 29er in this months edition of "Mountain Biking."
If anybody is interested :)

Here's how they summed it up!
Thumbs Up:
*Back to basics "retro" simplicity.
*Smooth and confidence inspiring for a fully rigid rig.
*Single speed ready - if you are into that.

Thumbs Down:
*Limited appeal - this bike isn't for everyone.

Looks schweet. My Monocog 29er pales in comparison to this bike. So much more bling!

Looks really nice. Is it noticeably heavy with the Alfine on the back?

As always, excellent build... what trails are you riding it on? Being a tall fella myself i can definitely see the appeal of the big wheel...

My Stumpy29 has sliding dropouts and I hardly ever use my middle ring, so I'm interested in the possibility of a geared hub - I really like perfectly straight chainlines... What size ring/cog are you using and how is the gear spread on the Alfine?

Nope, dont even notice it! Even when im 5foot in the air... nothing!

Mainly been riding Yarra Trails during weeknights and weekend mornings, mixed with some You Yangs whenever I have days off! Lots of fun, this 29er moves! If you want a 29er, just drop past the shop!

Im using a 34/18 ratio at the moment, and I dont think I will change it. On the Alfine hub, the 4th gear is what your actual ratio is, and there is a ~307% spread of gears through the hub. I get some great gears for the open sections, and some small gears for the techy sections! Really, couldnt be happier!

Ooh could you be more specific about the performance of the Alfine? Do you feel any resistance compared to a derailleur? Are there any dodgy gear changes?

I ask because if I were to build a 29er - which is an idea I've toyed with - it would be very similar to yours.

Have fun!

are you like 8 foot tall - cause that bike is HUGE and then the seat is high as well!! it does look nicely proportioned for a 29'er - very nice

thanks for the chain today alex, it works well and my only problem is the chainline is slightly out because the bb is too small, I did come back to the shop to weigh it but you were gone........8.74kg!!! The guy working there was like wtf? And thats with bmx pedals on as well. Salsa pride:cool:
