This camera (http://www.d-d-photographics.com.au/canong9.htm) fits the bill perfectly for what you want. $595 is a very good price and this supplier is reliable. Here's a review (http://www.digitalcamerareview.com/default.asp?newsID=3185&review=canon+powershot+g9). I'm thinking of getting one for my GF.

Canon PowerShot G9 Digital Camera

Those Powershots are the quickest compact digital cameras out for the price. There is still a little lag. A digital SLR will give much faster shots but will also be harder to carry on the trail.

Thanks heaps for that Graveclimber. Could pick it up from a store for a still competitive price? or is that a very good deal? The reason Im asking this is because I'd rather get it from a store so I don't have to use a credit card/parents don't have to be involved.

That price would be much cheaper than if you get it at Harvey Norman or a big name camera store. If you're in Sydney you can pick it up I believe. Otherwise contact them - I'm sure you could use a money order if you didn't want to use credit.

Im not really worried about carrying around so the size is'nt important.I assume the SLR type camera is very expensive?

SLR cameras probably start at around the $1000 level. Then you have to buy lenses and good ones are not cheap at all.....up to a few thousand each. For a 600mm lens maybe start selling you car to finance it :)

For MTB photos though you probably will use a wide angle lens more than a telephoto one.

SLRs feel a bit better in the hand with the bigger hand grips and allow better shutter release times generally. They also allow for faster focusing especially on higher end models. For low light situations where high ISO is needed, SLRs also have significantly less noise in the photos than compacts. Theses are just some of the many benefits of an SLR. However it is a bulky package and it does cost more once you factor in the cost of lenses and accessories.

Great thing about cameras like SLRs or the G9 is the manual control over shutter, apeture, ISO etc. Learn how these work together and you will take great action shots.

Oh also an external flash will also help. It will help freeze the motion in those fast action shots especially if the area is not well lit

It probably doesn't matter since your old camera is dead, but if you are ending up with photos without the rider in them it may help to pre-focus the shot. Most digital cameras let you do this by half pressing the shutter button. So point the camera where the rider will be, keep the shutter half pressed until you want to take the photo. This gets rid of the delay from the camera's auto focus.

Hmmm sound good I never thought about the pre focus but the g9 sounds like the camera I need, and the above price is is pretty good.

Not a bad little camera. I am starting to look at a camera to put in my pack for trail shots and this would fit the bill nicely. Now, where to find the money?
