PINT of Stella, mate!

Yeah, I know it's an yet another unimaginative 'favourite...' thread but I've spent the last couple of days dossing about the apartment watching some primo television and I'm always on the lookout for some more good shows to download/watch whilst I sink further and further into sloth-like apathy

At the moment I've been on a massive 'Dexter' binge. Fuck yer CSI:Miami crap, this is how ALL cop shows should be. Great dialogue, evocative settings, quirky characters, bloodshed, swearing and a sociopathic forensics scientist with a sideline in Hannibal Lecter style vigilantism. Just plain awesome (the only reason I'm on here just now is I'm still waiting for the next episode to d/l.)

So I thought I'd start a little list of The Classics...

Battlestar Galactica: Sci-Fi that avoids the usual geeky Star-Trek style utopian future setting for gritty realism and a nice line in political subtext.

Deadwood: If you like your westerns raw, violent and with an overabundant use of the word 'cocksucker' then this is for you. Ian McShane's 'Al Swearengen' is quite possibly the greatest tv character ever

Spaced: Greatest sit-com ever. A surreal masterpiece chock full of pop culture references, a class soundtrack and brilliant characters. Paved the way for Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.

Arrested Development: already the subject of a previous thread. US comedy at it's (non-animated) finest.

The Venture Brothers: Adult Swim cartoon based on a Johny Quest type character growing up to become an amphetamine addicted failure with two geeky kids and a psychopathic bodyguard with the coolest mullet ever.

Twin Peaks: An oldie but, fuck I was hooked (even if I didn't have a clue what was going on)

V: classic eighties nostalgia. alien lizards (in disguise) enslave the earth. It was really all about the nazis in a strange metaphorical sense. It went a bit shit when they resurrected it after the original victory though

Band of Brothers: speaking of Nazis, watch them get their arses kicked in this ace ten part-er following the troops of US airborne's E company romp through Europe from D-Day to VE-day.

A mention in dispatches also go out to the following...

The Simpsons, Cheers, Newstopia, Brass Eye, The Day Today, Airwolf, The Fall Guy, The Blackadders, Boondocks, Green Wing, Black Books, Father Ted, Alan Partridge, Saxondale (the best Steve Coogan's done since Partridge), Heroes, The Daily Show/Colbert Report, X-Files before it went shit, Taggart when he was still alive, Phoenix Nights, Scrubs, Big Train, The Sopranos (need to get the boxed set, haven't caught up since S2) Blue Thunder, Millennium, Beauty and The Beast (the Ron Perlman one, not Stan Zemanek:rolleyes:) The Equalizer and the Larry Sanders show

feel free to fire in your own suggestions and/or shoot down anybody elses on the grounds of shiteness...

Weeds: A look into the life of a middle/upper class single mother who recently became a widdow. She has to sell weed to make ends meet. Great comedy with some fairly adult themes. It's also a satire, often taking the piss out of American Suburbia.

Miami/La Ink: Yeah yeah, it's full of trie-hard yanks but it is good to watch. It shows some fairly interesting characters getting tatoo'd.

Top Gear - Awesome british car review show with extras thrown in (for example - they once drove three shitboxes down the spine of Africa in a challenge). All the cars they review are mostly high-end supercars too.

Fifth Gear - Similar to the above, but a bit more mainstream cars.

Prison Break - good recent series about a guy who intentionally gets himself arrested so he can break his brother out.

Seinfeld: Follows the lives of three of the funniest characters ever created; Kramer, George, Jerry. Elaine sucked. My favourite show of all time, every time I watch a repeat I find something funny I had not previously considered.

The Shambles: Channel 31 comedy show with a budget of about $0, featured some memorable characters such as: Rave Boy, Skyline Man, The Wanky Uncle. Also gutter talk was always a winner.

Family Guy: Bring it back channel 7! Ill take repeats, anything!

Mythbusters: Two humerous guys test a range of myths, often with catastrophic results. Some very extreme explosions and other cool stuff.

Home and Away: Shit actors, shit storyline and plot, shit production values, all around shit program. Yet I watch it every night?

The League of Gentlemen Dark, twisted comedy. The Christmas special gave my Brother's ex nightmares.
Seven Periods With Mr Gormsby New Zealand comedy about the world's least politically correct teacher. Absolutely brilliant show, and like the eponymous protagonist of the series, possibly the least politically correct TV ever.
Teachers Comedy about pommy teachers. Funny in it's own right, but much funnier once you learn to see what's happening in the background of just about every scene shot in the school

And I'll throw another vote in for Spaced

I can't think of too many more recent shows that are much good.

I'm not cool enough yet to use italics so heres my list:

Entourage: Loosely based on Mark Wahlberg (Marky Mark and the funky bunch) rise to hollywood fame. Great mateship, cars and girls.

Simpsons: All time classic

Family guy: Up there with the Simpsons

Top/5th Gear: Nice and not so nice cars driven how they were meant to be.

Mythbusters: Mismatched nerds butsing myths (duh), oh and the hottest Redhead ever Kari Byron (awesome smile)

Definitely agree with that. Love it when the old boy bores up the young moari kids. I honestly think this is where Chris Lilly got a few of his ideas from for Summer Heights High (for Jonah anyway). Incidentally it makes Summer Heights High look like a complete sack of shit.

Been trying to get my hands on the DVD for a while now. Think someone already suggested trying an ABC book shop.

Beavis and Butthead:Self explanatory really

For all you people who liked Saved by the Bell you really have to watch this clip where AC Slater beats on Zack. Classic!

Red Dwarf best smeggin' low-fi Sci-fi comedy in the smeggin multiverse o'righ'?

Doctor Who Hot chicks madly in love with geeky/old blokes gives us all hope. I love how event he new stuff dumbs down the special effects to maintain the cheeseness.

Rockwiz don't know just like it.

oh and
big Gig 90 standup comedy that featured the The Doug Anthony All Stars, Jean Kittson, Glynn Nicholas (Paté Biscuit and her hand puppet Bongo) and subliminal hard core pron form the breaka brothers

American Dad: Animation concerning the family of a CIA agent. Pushes the bounderies past Family Guy.

Drawn Together: Animation parody of Big Brother, using popular cartoon character types. Messed up shit!

Hermans Head: Short run comedy based around office worker Herman, and 4 characters in his head each responsible for different decisions, Love, Fear, Fun and Intellect. Featured Hank Azaria and Yeardley Smith of Simpsons fame.

David Attenborough Wildlife Doco's: Anyone in their 30's + will know.

Seinfeld is possibly one of the worst sitcoms to come out of the US. imo...

Anyway:

Doctor Who 'cos it's awesome. Although the new series is pretty cool, it gets owned by the old series on a level of awesomeness

The Simpsons Self-explanatory really...

That's all I got for now, I don't really watch a lot of TV.

Funnily enough it's pretty much the only one I can handle.

The Monkeys was a pretty good show. And as previously suggested the Goodies was pretty sweet too. I can't remember much when it comes to watching the goodies on TV as such. Watched all the ones my mum taped for my older brother though.

Those shows are shit. Top Gear's test track is constantly not driven on line, and over the limit, they aren't even serious enough about it to do it clean, not showy/noisy.

Their reviews are utter crap, they compare a car to a helicopter, is it cuter than a puppy etc - bullshit! There's no talk of how if you go past 9/10ths in a certain car that it will get very angry very quickly, in depth stuff that really matters.

POSM - I'm scared that you are so into TV, thats pretty full on.

These all tie for my favourite TV show:

Seinfeld - Have every series on DVD, one of my sons' first words was 'jerry'. Funny as all hell. Ross, how can you not like Elaine? She is comedic genius. 2nd only to The Simpsons in the comedy stakes.
* I watched it stoned one day & hated it, so pretty much gave up pot for that reason.

Sopranos -The violence, dialogue, Tony's menacing anger, Sylvio, Chris & Paulie bitching watching Meadow & AJ grow up, the themes on family loyalty, good & evil.
* I once watched an entire season in one day

Six Feet Under - So fucking fantastic, on par with Sopranos. Such a realistic portrayal of family dysfunction & unity it is scary. You want toboth hug every character & punch them inthe face at the same time.

The Simpsons - The funniest, most intelligent TV show ever. Works on more levels than the Burj Dubai.

Honorable Mentions: South park, Scrubs, Arrested Development, Wire in the Blood, Foyles War, Blackpool, Carnivale.

Allo Allo one of the funniest British comedies ever afaic, set in France in WW2 and cafe owner Rene is a reluctant member of the resistance. I love it.

The Sopranos like RICOH I watched a whole series in a day, several series in two days. I like many felt a bit cheated at the finale.

G-Force and Star Blazers, fantastic japanese cartoons toned down for a western audience, I need to see more of the Japanese versions.

X-Files, when this first came out I was instantly hooked, dragged on a little too long though and the movie that was supposed to wrap it all up was pretty lame.

Hogans Heroes, I used to love this when I was a kid, haven't seen it for years though.

I'm sure there are heaps more but I have to get to work.

I thought the finale of Sopranos was great. I watched about 6 times in a row.

I love 'Allo 'Allo! In fact I am going to buy it for my dad for christmas & then borrow it. "You must listen very carefully, I will say this only once", "You stupid woman!"

The only X-Files I liked was the Simpsons version.

those are some good shows, but the two best shows you may not have seen are the mighty boosh and harvey birdman

Doctor Who - longest ever running sci-fi series.

Seinfeld - a show about how minutiae can mean so much to people.

Family Ties - great show, loved it.

Honourable mentions:

The Addams Family - steered away from the sugary-soapy American sit-coms.

X-Files - the finish was CRAP, and unfortunately dragged down this great series.

Bottom: Rik Mayall playing Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson playing Ade Edmondson, classic psychotic, violent, politically incorrect comedy from the BBC. The live shows were a lot better.

Red Dwarf: The saga of the non-movie and the lack of series 9 has diminished my love of this series but I still watch it whenever it's on.

The Fast Show: Hi, I'm Ed Winchester......

Star Trek: TNG/Voyager: When these hit the mark, (e.g. the Borg), they were brilliant, when they got esoteric they were shite.

Jackass: It just appeals to my inner 12 year old. Jackass 2 may be the best movie ever made.

Podge & Rodge: A Scare at bedtime: This was a show on my old employer's alternative channel. Basically a couple of badly made puppets doing twisted urban myths. The Legend of the Golden Arse is one of my favourites. It's worth a look if you can find it for download anywhere. I have the first series on VHS but don't have a VCR anymore :(

Dad's Army.

Timeless, relatively gentle British comedy, and was a post Monty Python last blast for a number of the previous generation of British comic actors.

Hogan's Heroes.

Lame American comedy set in a WWII German POW camp. Ridiculous, but becomes MUCH, MUCH funnier when you find out what a total sleazebag lead actor Bob Crane was in real life.

Supernatural: 2 brothers, who's mother was murdered When they were young by A demon, and have spent their life hunting it with their father.
Prison Break: A man who has a brother in prison, who has been sentenced to death, for a crime he did not do. And his brother plans to break him out.
Reaper: 3 of the most unlikely people on missions to send escaped souls from hell, back to hell. One of them (sam) is the devil's bounty hunter because his parents sold his soul to the devil, to make his father better, because he was sick.
Highlander: Wicked show, its about ancient people, with powers, and to gain more power, they have to behead another highlander ( a lot more to it, but it would take for ever to explain)
Moonlight: A new TV show, it is a Vampire who is a private investigator, who has set rules to not feed on the innocent, children or women, Only to kill the ones who are guilty, so his like a super mega Vampire Private Investigator.

Dexter : Freaking awesome. Great laugh and what an original story.

The Wire : This is a real stayer. Very complex and realistic cop show like the Sopranos set in Baltimore.

Firefly : Awesome space pirate series. Such a shame it got canned after only 1 season.

The adventures of Brisco County Jnr. : Bruce Campbell. Do I really need to go on ?

Saxondale and Alan Partridge : Great britcoms. Great characters.

[B]Colbert Report : Piss funny political satire.

3 Non Blondes : Hilarious candid camera style show but totally shameless and cruel with no "ha ha we got ya" releif to the victims.

Blackadder : Such wit and brilliant acting by all.

The Green Wing : English version of Scrubs but 100 times more odd

Kenny vs Spenny : An evil genius and a hopeless optimist battle out for glory and to humiliate the other.

Nighty Night : Evil evil show.

Good guys Bad guys - why? Elvis' car, arty scenes and best of all it had a character with tourettes syndrome.

Bush tucker man - I like land rovers and the early explorer's stories.

Nature docos - so long as you can here Richard Attenborough's voice, it's very reassuring.

Some B grade NZ soapie that was on late at night on 9 a year or two ago, can't remember the name but it was so bad it was good, my wife & I could not stop watching it even though we wanted to.

Last man standing - I related to the the story line and humour a little too well think.

FUUUUUCK....he said "OF ALL TIME" people, then I see shit like "Friends" and "Rove" come on....

Even the usually sycophantic Herald TV reviewers have said of Friends: while it is undoubtedly successful, it is hardly a classic TV show.

I was just watching the clip of the Beastie Boys 'Sabotage' and remembered
'Funky Squad'. A complete piss take of seventies cop show complete with ads from the era. I loved it, and it had members from DAAS and The Late Show. Speaking of which, I also loved the Late Show and the Big Gig, DAAS Kapital was interesting for us Doug Anthony All Stars fans too, not particularly great though.

And how could I forget Takeshi's Castle? Those crazy japanese.:D

And for some of you youngins that have no idea what I'm talking about heres a fuggin classic clip.

Again reviving old threads but I've lately become re-addicted to Trailer Park Boys and I'm still loving NCIS and I love picking holes in and picking out all the ripped off movie clips in JAG. (I also have a terrible affliction for Catherine Bell)On a different tack are there any other Life on Mars fans? I loved this series so much, I couldn't believe it only ran two seasons, at least it didn't drag on like some others.

**EDIT** They were tele-movies not really TV but the Sharpe series and Foyle's War really got me too.

Firefly - cowboys in space. Kinda. Written and produced by Joss Whedon. It only lasted a season, because Fox suck. Also led to the movie Serenity, but you must watch the show first.

Rome - Title says it all.

The West Wing - actually makes politics interesting.

Ideal - just fooking bizarre.

You'll have to YouTube these ones, but it's worth it -

Never Mind The Buzzcocks - wickedly funny British pop quiz show. They take the piss out of their guests to the point where one of them actually walked off half way through the show.

Mock The Week - again, does what it says on the tin; a bunch of (mostly) British comedians get as many laughs as they can out of the events of the week.

Friday Night Download youtube is funny, so is this. its just becoming more like Australia's Funniest Home Vids though, more interviews and talking than actual videos.

Dunno if these have been mentioned, i went to look but after about 6 pages i gave up.

House - Lame at times, i always assumed it was mainstream crap like the OC so i never gave it a chance. But, i was wrong, it's interesting, maintains attention and keeps you coming back for more. Witty too.

NCIS - Sad i know, but its catchy, and so thrilling at times. Although it isnt shoot 'em up style, it has good storylines and keeps you guessing till the end.

Scrubs - Funny, but not funny funny. Eccentric but I like it.
Breaking Bad - Seriously awesome. I recommend this to everyone! Really good drama/action flick about a guy who...well I won't go into it too much, just go watch it!
Two and a Half Men - Funny, good show. Charlie Sheen at his best (well, recently at least).
The Extras - Insanely funny British humour, great show. Some seriously whacked out characters too.
Flight of the Conchords - Funny but cool, kinda like the Extras. Good show.

Deadwood: If you like your westerns raw, violent and with an overabundant use of the word 'cocksucker' then this is for you. Ian McShane's 'Al Swearengen' is quite possibly the greatest tv character ever

A- freakin'-men. Rates as possibly the best TV I have seen. along with Band of Brothers of course. Can't wait for the "sequel", set in the pacific..

You already mentioned Dexter, though I am not enamoured of Season 3.

F*** me, has nobody mentioned The Wire yet?

I've just spent the entire UK summer watching all 5 series and can't help raving about it like some sort of mad religious convert.

It's quite simply perfection.

On a similar note it's worth checking out The Corner (also by David Simon and set in Baltimore) and Generation Kill (produced by Simon but based on a book by Evan Wright). Both excellent mini-series...

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who detests little britain.

Timline of little Britain quality

average------------> awful.
Season 1 2 epsisodes later

What few redeeming features it had were murdered by fans attempting to immitate the accents and catch phrases. I swear if I hear another immitation of Vicky Pollard I'll snap.

On a better note:

Black books. Without a doubt the funniest show I have seen. It as about an alcoholic Irish Book store owner, Bernard Black, with a meagre sense of proportion and no sense of socially acceptable behaviour. He is narcisitic, sarcatic and brutally honest. It details his daily existance dealing with the great unwashed public and the anger he has to cope with over their stupidity. Wildly entertaiing

some of these are on foxtel/austar and some have to be "acquired" but they are some of the best product of the writers strike

Breaking bad. Stars Bryon Kranston (dad from malcom in the middle) as a tumour toting, chemistry teacher cum meth cook that goes from a mediocre life to trying to go out with a bang. Awesome TV. was on showcase during sept.

Big bang theory. Written by the same guys that do two and a half men. Follows the trials and tribulations of 4 nerds and the one hot chick in the apartment next door. comedy gold.

Generation Kill. HBO adaptation of the controversial book written by Rolling Stone author Evan Wright. Follows a company of recon marines as they enter bagdad for the second golf war. Shows all the gritty anti war themes from the front lines, exactly as Wright saw it (he travelled with the marines). ultra realistic.

Yeah, one of my mates got me onto to ...philadelphia a few months ago. Total sick low budget genius! At first though I thought adding Danny DeVito onto the cast was a desperate move by the makers but he's actually made it even more twisted. The Green Flash/Philadelphia Eagles try-out episode is one of the funniest things I've ever seen!
