This is great news. Hoo-fucking-ray !!

I don't care if it's a politcal stunt, a popularity boost decision just get us the fuck out of that quagmire of a shit hole. We had no place being there in the first place. The ONLY reason WE went in was to appease the USA. We had vested interest to stay out of it ala AWB (Lets not go into that) and now we have a chance to set back and make rational desicions about out involvement in the area without worrying about how it will affect out troops. We should never have gone in there unless it was under a multinational force under the UN or at the very least NATO. Our presence there was almost negligable when compared to the numbers of US troops and out resources were split over too many regions, like Timor, Afghanistan and I think we were in an African nation at the time of invasion too. We are too small a country to have out comparitively small defense forces occupied in an unnessecary war that had nothing to do with us.

With casualities starting to roll in in Afghanistan it's clear that that is where out efforts should be focused. Personally I dont think we should be there either but it's 1000X more justifiyable to be there than Iraq.

We have been party to making a huge mess there and yes we should stay to clean it up but there is no effort to make that happen at all. I am hoping that once it's just the US there they will accept that they need international support and call on the UN to try to find a solution involving an international peace keeping force hopefully involving neighbours of Iraq. The more we distance outselves from the area the less likely we are to be sucked into the war with Iran when that happens and that will be 100 times worse than the Iraq war.

More to come.. gotta work

Just as they announce that today, a new deployment is heading out today also. My brother is heading there for 6 months.

I think this will be inline with what the US will be doing come late 2008 and 2009. They have run out of rotation, it will literally be impossible for the US to maintain current, or pre-surge troop levels come this time.

Which seems to be why they're building colossal bases in the middle of nowhere to retreat to and maintain a presence, without actually having to do the "policing" work.

Rudd's policy has always been a scheduled withdrawl or relocation of trainers to outside Iraq to make it easier to do their work.

Still, good to see.
