hey all,
Just wondering what your opinion on Tattoo's were, whether you love them, or hate them, or just don't mind the odd one as long as it's not in the wrong places , I personally love tattoo's, sleeves, love em'. They would be a good story to tell your grand children about "when you were young and stupid" and just for memories:p
Then there is when you get old and wrinkly and they shrivel ( no offence to the elder members on here with tat's)

Defiantly yay for me. Been working on a half sleeve for well over a year now and still needs some more work done before it's finished, not just a show piece, meaningful material to me is all through it, hence why it's taken me so long to draw it up. I plan on getting it for my 18th. I'm very fascinated by other peoples tattoos as well, i just think they're awesome, and for once not just because it's scene.

I dont mind the odd tat.
But i was whatching Viva La Bam the other day, and Dunn's tat's SUCK. He has millions of little ones all over, he has them on his elbow and even in the joint.
The lacon bro's tat's look good too.
I went with an "i dont mind them". Although i do love tats, i think they can easily be screwed up by wrong choices etc.
Not a fan of cliche Asian characters (not being racist!! I'm half Japanese!!) but i think they are just tacky and lame. More inspired by Aussie HC style ones eg. Pirate ships, underwater worlds, scrolls etc.

I love a good tattoo, vibrant in color and with heaps of detail. WATCH MIAMI INK every day on channel 646 at 7:30. best show ever, taught me so much about tatts.
However, i hate those tattoos you see on old people that are simle line drawings and look green.
My question is, do all tattoos with black, does that color fade to a gross grean over time? or does it just fade in it's sharpness?

All depends on the ink.
Saw some guy with a Fox logo tattooed on his neck a while ago and shook my head, they're the types of tatts i can't stand!

lol. miami ink. They are real good but there are many equivalent artists.
I say yes, I like them - as long as they arent cliche, a band logo or from some book. Also people who copy others designs suck. I'm getting my feet done early next year and my left calf/shin mid year. then right calf, probably half sleeves down the line as well. Investing a lot of time and money into it.
Super detailed shit can fade and will need to be retouched over the yeard but is well worth it imo.
I rate Garver's work. I would like to get a Japanese style tatt. Something with samurai on my arm. One day I will put money aside for that purpose....... One day!

As soon as i have thought of a design and i am of age i will go and get about half a sleve.
If the reason you are asking this question is to decide weather to get a tat or not I would say a definitave NO for you. Tattoos are an expression of personal choice and should not be entered into lightly. It says something about the owner and is a lifetime commitment. Rememberance of a person or event in ones life or just dedication to a life style. I have a few tats and do not regret anyof them, but I feel it was my choice and not a chioce made through pier pressure or an attempt to be cool or fit in. Make your own mind up on tattoos and why people get tattooed, then and only then make your OWN mind up as to the acceptability in you own mind of Tattoos.

Not a fan of cliche Asian characters (not being racist!! I'm half Japanese!!) but i think they are just tacky and lame. More inspired by Aussie HC style ones eg. Pirate ships, underwater worlds, scrolls etc.I would hardly call that 'Aussie HC style,' given that most of the imagery and the script descends from old style sailor tatts. They're pretty rad but really not my style, most of the imagery is overrused imo. tbh they are just as tacky, and as common as that Japanese traditional styled stuff.

I work in a skate shop with a bloke who has some tat's that really made me dissapointed. But I guess it's his decision, and he is a hardcore skater. He has:
- Tony Hawk's signature
- ZERO (skateboard brand) skull and logo
- Jamie Thomas' signature
- And 'Skate or Die'
He has others, including a large dragon and banner with his mothers name on it (she died 5 years ago) as a dedication, and also some flames on his leg, but those mentioned above sorta turned me off. Seems like he's just become a billboard, to me anyway.

I can completely understand where you're coming from. But i was referring to the music scene of aussie HC. Within that scene, those are the styles most popular and i also like them. But yes, i can understand they would look tacky to most people.

Listen to Dug...Dug is smart, Dug has wise words. Dont be one of the many douches around that think 'hey, other people have got tats, I want to get one because they have one'. It may well end up being a big regret, it may not.
I have a couple of big tats on my back that I have had for a few years. One is a series of waves across the bottom of my back with a couple of bodyboarders DK'ing and busting off them and the other is a big sun up the top of my back. I regret neither because they both have meaning for me. I have bodyboarded for as long as I could walk almost, I remember my dad paddling me out with him and giving up sweet sweet waves for himself to push me into them and those memories and other bodyboarding times with mates are some of my best memories...also some of the worst with big waves and near drownings but hey, take the good with the bad. I got the sun because to me its a sign of the good times had outdoors whatever I may have been doing at the time and of the good times to come. Ironically, I just had a skin cancer cut out just below it on my back:rolleyes:.
My next two tattoo's will be two smallish puzzle pieces on the inside of my left arm for my wife and I as I am not allowed to wear a wedding ring with what I do for work and the other will be a half sleeve designed by my wife and her best mate as they are both brilliant drawers and painters. It is yet to be started as I have to give them a basic outline to run with it.
Somehow, I think I shall vote yes on the tats:D

That is why people get Tats. It also gives me the willies when people get little strange tattoos just because they got pressured into getting one or they just rock up into the shop on a one off thing.
If you don't mind me asking, what job dosn't allow wedding bands? Or is it a personal thing and you don't want it to get damaged
I'm all for tats. Love the look (of a good one), especially large or colourful pieces, and the commitment.
Yet for all the interest and appreciated I have, I doubt I'll ever get one.
50 years old, down the beach, with a half sleeve.... It just doesn't fit for me. So Yay, but Nay. If you have to ask wether you should get one, then you definitely shouldn't.
My brother just got an awesome tatt. His 2nd and 3rd toes are webbed - I look down at a recent birthday lunch, and there is a dotted line along his webbing, and a very small pair of scissors just next to the 1st knuckle. Such a small stupid easily concealed job. Classic.

Trust him he is an electrician...... Conductive ..
Also its not wise to wear rings of any sort of you work on or operate any type of machinery you can get your fingers skinned to the bone

I think it is a waste of money. Just like piercings what is the point.
If you aren't born with it why do you need it!
I just dont see the point getting something on your body that you will regret later in life.
The southern cross your name on your back even your post code tattooed on what is this suppost to prove you are tough. Or you got it just in case you forgot who you are and where you live.
I also dont under stand why people get mum and/or dad tattooed on them selves. so they can remember there parents? isnt that what photos are for.
As you can see i think they are pointless
My 2 cents
Ive been designing a half sleve for the past 6 months... Its finally getting to the point where it tells a story and means something to me and isnt just a collage of pictures anymore.
Hopefully i finish it soon, so i can get it done.

Each to their own fletcha....but I gave some pretty good reasoning behind my tattoos and if you cant understand that then its pointless trying to make you. For what its worth, I also have piercings which I love as much as tats and will continue to get as well.
Bitterbro, Im a sparky. Not technically supposed to wear wedding rings or any other jewellery but I like to wear my wedding ring. That was until a mate had his ring finger skinned when he slipped of a ladder and his wedding ring got caught:eek:
Although I can understand why people get tats, I for one am an unlikely candidate to get one. Though if I was forced I would have a humorous one, ie the one where you shave the top corner out of your pubes and have a stick figure with a lawn mower.

What Dug said... No-one can tell you whether or not to get tattoos or what to get. It's 100% about you and what you want. I love the idea of body art so long as it is truely done as a personal expression.
I cannot fucking stand all the bullshit wanna be fucktards (excuse the langauge please) that get something just to have a tattoo. such as previously mentioned, a fox logo.... seriously what the fuck.
My brother being a tattoo artist I see myself having a fair few in the future. I'm toying with a few ideas etc at the moment and will be going under the gun soonish (when i know for sure what i want done, and my brother isn't booked out:p).

If you have foxtel, watch Miami Ink. It will totally change your perspective on tattoos. People get tattoos based on the highs and the lows of their lives. It may sound corny but they get them to remind them of past experinces and to not go back their. Alot of them are in triumph of an obstacle over come and they want to remember that. They get a tattoo that symbolises that experince and they can look back on it and reflect.
As for tribal tattoos, yeh IMO they are a little ugly and pointless but if you want one, go for life and get one.

For someone who professes to know a lot about tats, you're drawing a long bow... you've got no idea why he got them. He could have lost a best mate etc etc etc.
An ffs, why does every tattoo anyone gets have to be a serious statement about a life changing event? It's just a tattoo, it can be funny. I.e. this tattoo is one of my favourite ideas. I just wish I had thought of it first.

i'm big on symbolistic tattoos, things that mean a lot to me, although that doesn't mean funny tats can't be just as meaningfull
and personally i prefer straight black tats, i don't like coloured tats, any that i get will be straight black, not thin lines but yes if you get what i mean

Yay.
I've had my tatts for quite a few years now and whilst they don't look as fresh as they did when I first got them they still carry a bit of meaning and instantly remind me of particular moments in time.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h34/taylorndt/DSC00214.jpg
The big one on the arm is actually three seperate tatts. The two dragons were both products of youthful folly back in Scotland. I've always liked far eastern culture and whilst it's a bit cliche I knew I had to have a dragon. That led to two dragons as the 1st was getting lonely. The background came later as a result of a boozy night with a thai bar girl in Chiang Mai. Her bro ran a tattoo studio and I'd always figured I needed a background for the dragons so she took me along the next day. We hatched out a few ideas, adapted a couple of existing templates and voila.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h34/taylorndt/DSC00208.jpg
The chest tatt came later. The design is from the old cover of Iain Banks' novel 'The Crow Road.' Banks has always been a big influence on me and I always loved the stark abstract cover art of his novels. Whilst The Wasp Factory is my favourite book, I really identified with the Crow Road in my late teens and it's cover looked like it would make a good tattoo.
The tatt itself was done at hanky-panky's tattoo studio in the red-light district of Amsterdam on the day after England got knocked out of the World Cup by Brazil in 2002. Like I said, it reminds me of a time and a place and to be honest there's usually not many clear memories to be found after a week in the 'dam...

Question:
In theory, if someone was to get the Dark side of the moon logo tattooed what would be the best way of doing in? Considering it is on a solid black background. Would you do the whole black background or use black outlines for the white bits or just leave it white?
For example http://www.bric-a-brac.org/humour/images/divers/pink_floyd.jpg 3rd from left.

It'd be a toughy. The easiest way would be to just get the prism and rainbow tattooed with the original white lines substituted for black. You could have it as normal with a black background that either fades out at the edges or is a perfect square a la LP sleeve. This would be a bit more expensive and would take a hell of a lot more time and pain (to ensure a solid black the artists go over and over and over the same spot to ensure a uniform colour. it f***ing aches and still isn't guaranteed to be a solid black.)
Still, I'd probably go for the 2nd option as it's such an iconic image that anything else would be a compromise.
Another good option though would be some of Gerald Scarfe's designs for The Wall. They're distinctive yet aren't overpowering or too cartoony...

okay fletcha here i am to try and prove you wrong in all or most of your points
first you say its a waste of money what if you have the money to spare,
then you say, if you arnt born with it why do u need it, well were you born with a bike.
some people may not regret tattoos later in life and j have heard f some laser stuff that can zap off tatoos so if you do regret just go under the zapper,
The southern cross this shows that you are Australian and proud, and with the name your name may imply something or if people forget your name they do not have to go under the embaressment of forgetting you name./
when people get mum/dad tattood on there body it can be there way of remembering there parents for example people with life sentances in jail have tats of there parents names saying R.I.P insert name here as it is there way of remembering there parents without the risk of there photo being stolen and deformed
anyway thats my two cents on why tats are awsome by the way i dont have a tat but the day i turn 18 ill have a nice chinese dragon down my arm and a southern cross on my heart although til then i should work on geting my parents to sign the permition forms for me to get one

okay fletcha here i am to try and prove you wrong in all or most of your points
first you say its a waste of money what if you have the money to spare,
then you say, if you arnt born with it why do u need it, well were you born with a bike.
some people may not regret tattoos later in life and j have heard f some laser stuff that can zap off tatoos so if you do regret just go under the zapper,
The southern cross this shows that you are Australian and proud, and with the name your name may imply something or if people forget your name they do not have to go under the embaressment of forgetting you name./
when people get mum/dad tattood on there body it can be there way of remembering there parents for example people with life sentances in jail have tats of there parents names saying R.I.P insert name here as it is there way of remembering there parents without the risk of there photo being stolen and deformed
anyway thats my two cents on why tats are awsome by the way i dont have a tat but the day i turn 18 ill have a nice chinese dragon down my arm and a southern cross on my heart although til then i should work on geting my parents to sign the permition forms for me to get oneWow mate, you just missed the point on so many levels.
This os the stuff I was talking about that the guy from Paris does. It's very simple but so easy to fall in love with.

That stuff just doesn't do it for me. makes me think that they gave a 4 year old a gun and said there's the colouring pad. but hey, it's not going on me so why should i complain.

A whole load of my mates just got back from schoolies. It seems as if every man and his dog (referring to my mates I mean) has a tatoo.
Among the various tats were:
- A couple both got the same peace sign/logo
- Boxing kangaroo
- Southern Cross
All pretty unoriginal in my opinion..but cool I guess if they're happy with them. My best mate is getting the word 'Resilience' written in Kanji on his arm tomorrow, and i'm planning to get the drivetrain of a bike (really simple) pretty soon too. Nothing insane compared to a majority of the photos on here, but meh.
Some stories I heard from schoolies were shocking. A guy got 'Schoolies 07' on his back, and various other people got the name of their girlfriend/boyfriend at the time too. To me, at this age, that's a little dissapointing.
I like tattoos. Arm finished & chestpiece beginning winter 08.

I have my left arm, wrist to shoulder, and the majority of my right arm tattoed. I must say that if i had my time again i wouldnt get visible tatts, although society is more liberal these days it can cause some issues with your career, despite EEO and Anti Discrimination laws. Im just lucky to have a stable government job i guess.
My message to the groms would be to seriously consider placement of your tatts. Although hard to fathom now your decisions as a youth will affect your future. Despite my protestations to the contrary, my tatts were definately a manifestation of my rebellion as a youth. I wish i'd rebelled by studying hard and becoming a doctor. My wife and daughter, plus one on the way, would be living a better life if i had.
Ah well.
I'm looking at getting my first tat in the next few weeks. Going to be on the inside of my bicep, a sort of commemorative piece for my grandpa.
Just got a few questions,
1. Being from the beaches and surf everyday, ive read saltwater is bad for the healing process. is this true?
2. I'm looking at going to innervision, which artist do you guys recomend for script pieces there?
thanx in advance oh and sick tats already posted.

1. Saltwater is bad for the healing process so you should stay out of the water for 1-2 weeks, depending on size of tatoo & how quickly it heals (as everyone is a bit different). I went ocean swimming the day after I got one of my tattoos & believe it doesn't look as good as it could because of my not sticking to aftercare procedures, mainly swimming in the ocean.
2. Rhys at Innervision specialises in script writing. He did my arm & is a fantastic artist & great bloke. You won't be dissapointed with his work, however at last check there was a 6 week waiting list.

I recently booked with Dean at Steel Lotus and taking the first available time slot for consultation only I am going in in late February.
In saying that, the wait will be well worth it...
I have got a couple of tattoos already and next will be a quater sleeve. As mentioned before, think of your future and 'career aspirations' when chosing your tattoo positioning. I'd suggest putting a t-shirt and shorts on and chossing a spot that would be covered by those clothes!

I've got a tribal design on my left shoulder and a lizard on my right shoulder. Given my occupation and career aspirations they're placed as they are so as to be easily hidden. I like them, but must admit that they have no specific meaning. I'm halfway through designing a back piece with my name and those of my wife and sons, as I'd like my next one to actually "mean something". Personally I find it ridiculous that society as a whole in this day and age instantly cast aspersions on someone's character because of the presence of tatts or piercings; these are but superficialities and in no way represent a person's character.
Re the stories of schoolie's tatts, that's really disturbing.

Call Steel Lotus and ask for Heath, he does some very nice script work
(they're just down the hill from Inner Vision- same street).
The attached isn't my tat but it's one of Heath's jobs... I'm trying to find a shot of mine.

It was pretty much all done free hand so i had no idea what it would be like until it was finished. There is more to the story but i seem to have a special ability to come across like a 12 year old over the internet so im not going to even try.

I really quite like tatts, but I have never thought of anything in particular I'd want, so I've never got any.
It's a shame Celtic one are cliché (a bit like tribal tatts) because I'd kinda like one. If I could figure out a way to make some tree design look masculine I'd consider that (because I'm kinda a greenie).

What is the point.
My 2 cents
mate, didnt you know that tats make you 10% harder:p

Found a picture of my tat, it's on the inside of my left bicep.
It says Nec Aspera Terrent which is latin for 'Not Daunt by Difficulty'... it's on my family crest and both my brothers also have it.
I should also mention that this photo was taken about 2 hours after I had the tat done... that explains the 'rawness' of it.

love tats and will be doing the 5th one in some time.
i just want somewhere else but upper body. legs aren't really suited to anything other that very intricate artwork.
my choice was either do a semi sleeve from the back, over the shoulder to halfway to the elbow.
or
across the whole of my upper back, but i dont want to go there as the last tattoo on my back was so painful it took me 5 years to even think of getting some other tattoo re done.
design will be oriental or maori based, maori tatts are really what i really like, but i would like it to be done by a proper maori guy as i want it to mean something rather that just artwork, but i also really like japanese tatts, but i doesn't really float my boat.
i have also thought of indian designs, but most of them are pretty flat.

Isnt "my brothers keeper" a famous Bra Boys tattoo on the bloke who got done for perjury, protecting his bro?

And slip, 'My Brothers Keeper' is a tattoo that many Bra Boys (Maroubra, Sydney) have..it's just Koby Abberton made it more prolific when he was charged with being an accessory to murder.

Speaking of tattoo's, my best mate got his first one yesterday.
Means a lot to him and his family: 'Resilience' in Kanji.
I did a series of photos for him tonight. Here's one of them. Really like his tattoo.

You guys are kidding me, right? With all the dumb-ass tattoos that we (or at least I) have seen over the years, why would what that guy suggested be unimaginable? Hell, I'm sure you guys noticed several of the completely terrible and ridiculous tattoos that were shown earlier in this thread...
Also, how do I know that guy isn't capable of putting something most people (meaning, people who are avid about tattoos) think is idiotic? Farkin isn't exactly the gathering ground of nuclear scientists, y'know.
Plus, we all know that "My brother's keeper" tattoos exist. So why not that "kunts for lyfe" or whatever that other one is?
Gimmee a break.
*EDIT* Actually axertes, I was too hasty in my response... I didn't give you a chance to defend yourself. Can you please explain why you feel that this was so obviously a joke that you posted such a lippy, smart-ass remark? Educate us, please.
