View Full Version : My first DH bike
After months of riding my son's old crappy XC bike and then his STP, today I got my own DH bike. Having a limited budget (around$1000) and needing a small frame, and living in Tassie, and wanting it before Christmas there wasn't much to choose from, but I got what I wanted!! :)(Had some friends pray for it - true!)
I got a Kona Primo 2004, small frame size, and it's in excellent condition, been cleaned up beautifully and it's red - so it must be fast! Right? ;) I think it might be a somewhat unusual bike too, in that I bought it from another woman. I suspect, in such a male dominated sport, that there aren't too many DH bikes that have only had female owners.
Now I just have to learn to ride fast, rail berms and fly over drops...woohoo! It's gonna be fun summer!

that is awesome!! I wish my mum, or even dad understood bikes as much as I do. I tell them about something and they're like, "and what's that again"
Anywayz Goodluck! :D
Thanks ! Maybe you should all tell your Mums (and Dads) that they could have a go too. There are lots of over 40 blokes riding and a few over 40 women too. They say 'It's all downhill after 40" Hallelujah!
Jill you have inspired me... I am late 20's and a bit of a down hill phobe ;) I worked in a bike shop in London where all the boys were obsessed with DH and XC. I am more of a roady (but am coming to the dark side ;)
I must have just missed you in Thredbo, was there around Christmas. I see you are coming to Canberra in the new year (oh opps, that's now.) Why don't you send me a pm and maybe we can hook up for coffee and a chat or something. I will def. be around during nationals time. The only problem is that the course has no trees and it's way too open.
Kate :)
PS - stoked about your bike, awesome, my mates in London love the Kona bikes and I have heard lots of good things about the Stinky. That's cool when you pray for stuff and it happens. Are you a Christian like me?
Hi Kate
Darn! I've only just checked into Farkin today and I'm in Melbourne now. Would have loved to have met up with you in Canberra. We went to Stromlo on 3 days and also rode xc at Sparrows Hill with my brother. Had great fun. Even got pictures. :o I'm still a 'beginner' at this DH stuff but getting better and enjoying it in spite of many bruises. (PTL!No broken bones) :)I love it when I see other girls riding DH. I saw one at Thredbo and one at Mt Buller but none at Mt Stromlo. :) Have decided to keep on doing lots of riding, as much as I can, when I get back home to Tassie. Might even have a go at our next state series race. That'll give the boys something to laugh at hey!?:D

very cool, nice action shot ;) Did your brother take this?
I didn't realise you were not from canberra, shame, but good luck down in tassie, hope you find some cool riding buddies.
Are there any girls in Canberra who want to go riding with me. I am a hack, female and still ride a stiffy, long story and due to lack of funds I got rid of my hard tail a while back :( But I am still keen to ride and have some fun. Message me if anyone wants to go for a cruise, but no pros please, I won't be able to keep up.

Your seriously the coolest mum ever.
Thanks :D
I just did my first race recently too. I was slow but I didn't fall off and it was FUN! And I told all the boys that if I can do it, I reckon some of their Mums can too! We need more girls (of all ages) riding.:)

Great picture.
Maybe i can get my mother in law on a bike once she gives up karate.
With the great hills in Devonport, you'll be a DH star in no time.
I second the coolest mum ever comment too.:)

"Wildside" would be an awesome epic ride! Requires a bit more endurance and different bike to what I have now, but definitely something to consider for the future. Love to meet you when you're down here next time!
