Yeah and there is a good reason for that, they are good bikes with good parts at a good price.

Yes the kona's may be bomb proof but
-limited warranty
-poo on stick geo
-weight sucks
-components suck
-doesnt like having chainguides installed....(took the bike shop some grinding cutting and chopping to put mine on my old kona)
go the stp
-lifetime warranty
-great specs
-nice color
-great geo
-IT'S GIANT!!
and cause i have one lol
shred

-poo on stick geo
and what makes you say that?? have you even riden one?? i would go the shred, but if ypu do go the shred get the extra small, the smalls feel to big and stretched out

STP. Just make sure you get the smaller frame, the large frame has some geometry changes that slightly spoil the bike.
Oh, and budget for a set of decent pedals. The Welgos that come stock are somewhat death.

G'day Mate,
First of all.. why would you bother asking this thread, DO NOT GET A GIANT STP 2!! My mate Jase has a STP 2 (2007) and he has had to replace alot of components on it. He has changed his brake pads 3 times (all back)! All because they have just worn out... It's not just his brake pads so many other things I wouldn't even class it as a bike, the back deraiuler, just don't get me started on how bad STP 2's are..
I got a Kona Shred (08) and haven't looked back, so far it has served me great!!
Well thats just my opinion! :D

The Konas geo is more trail worthy then most other bikes. Longer chainstays, higher BB and slacker headtube all contribute to the feeling. STP is lighter (thus a little weaker you would assume) but the lifetime warranty makes it a non issue.

id go the kona, stps are spreading like wild fire
And Kona's never did?
Now, people have realized how much better the STP it.

The warranty for a kona frame is 5years... The geometry is only "poo on stick" if it does not suit your riding style... I have never heard of a Kona being overly heavy... The components may not be good but the frame sure is almost bombproof (Giants lack in frame quality)... How can that be true when the 2007 Kona Cowan came with a chianguide???
The STP frame is not warranted against dirt jumping and off road use (I couldn't find a copy of their warranty but I have read that from the 2006 Giant catalouge)... Great specs but weak frame... And which fucking bastard said not to buy a Kona because of the "PRETTY COLOURS"??? Yet again, can be "poo on stick" geo or it could be "great" geo, depends how you ride... So if Giant bought out Kona and put a Giant badge on them they would automatically become better bikes???
I rest my case ;)...

I think you should get a new Norco 125, they are $1500 and with some better forks, IMO, it would be a sick settup

The shred is a SICK as bike! And for a thousand bucks it's great value for money. The Giant STP 2 is also a thousand bucks and terrible value for money, so in my opinion get the kona. Very strong frame, has also held up for downhill for me! :D

id get the stp because one of my mates has a 2007 kona shred and two other mates have got a 2007 stp2 and 2008 stp and the people with the stp2's are alot happier
