View Full Version : Issues with Sram 9 speed chain.

Every time I go for a ride in the wet or there is a bit of mud about, my sram 9 speed chain gets tight links, jumps around on the cassete and through the derailluer and generally acts like a little bitch.

It's not like I'm riding through metres of mud or anything like that, I'm talking about your usual forestry firetrail and single track in the rain.

Twice now, I have had a link actually burr over and seize up so that I've had to replace it with a new joiner link. I figure that a tiny stone or something has got caught in there and smeared the edge of the link over to create the burr.

Anyhow, is this a regular issue with these chains or am I expecting a bit too much and its just normal behaviour for a chain in the wet?

Should I replace the entire chain with an xt/xtr?

I clean it properly after every dirty ride and use rock'n'roll gold.

Thanks, Wellsey.

I've heard that new chains, chainrings and cassettes are a bit stiff and need wear in time. Maybe your chain needs a bit of stress to loosen up and the water is just making it stiff in its early age? I had heaps of issues with my new drive chain, but after a bit of riding on it, it settled down. I didn't even use lube like you are using, which i should!
