View Full Version : Aptitude Test
Dear mods:
Farkin is a growing community, there will bound to be growing pains. But merely as a suggestion, can those in charge consider an aptitude test of some sort upon new members registering? Despite the troublesome nature of it, I think it may aid in filtering out thought who were destined to be flicked. Even though sometimes you just can't fight the curiosity but to go to the last page of a banned thread and cringe at the banned member/s, I reckon we can do without that.
I can imagine it'd be a bastard of a job at balancing the accessibility and integrity of this site. As much as I love this place, it bothers to be faced with thoughtless dribbles every time I managed to get on the net.
To those who had made efforts to maintain the informative, and entertaining side of Farkin, well done and let's keep it that way.
Happy New Year.

Like a site induction test, on a mine site, building site or other industrail site?
Farkin is a web SITE is it not?
I'm all for a web site induction and test. Just simple multiple choice stuff to prove you've read the rules. Unlimited time and unlimited attempts sort of thing.

100% Agree. This will seperate the Flat Heads from the Phillips Heads (smart ones;))
Maybe a test for some of the newer users as well, as in the last 6 months?

TBH, I've wanted that for a long time.
1) What do I need to do before posting a thread? Refresh the screen, Check my review mirror, Use the Search funtion, Put the cat out, Wait for an hour before I swim.
2) Do I have to apply for Trading Access before I use the For Sale Section? Yes No
4) Can I use SMS/TXT spelling (e.g. u ne1, ur, ppl, m8, etc.) Yes No
5) When using the For Sale section do I need a template like all the other people are using? Yes No
6) When asking questions about a particular bike do I post these questions in Dirt Jumping/Street Downhill Freeride Cross Country Parts 'n Stuff
7) Can I use words like poof, fag, homo to describe people, actions or things I don't like? Yes No.
8) Can I use terms like nigger, wog, gook, and other racial terms? Yes No
9) If I don't like some one can I openly abuse them? Yes No
10) If I see a post that blatently breaks these rules should I report it? Yes No.
ETc. etc.
Simple, easy and makes our job so much farkin easier which makes us happier and nicer in general. :)
Another possible option would be to place an artificial post with all the above mentioned nasties and the said applicant would be required to rewrite it according to the rules. This would mean some intelligence would be required, not just to flick to the rules page and answer the questions accordingly.
Just a idea....

I think its a great idea, obviously it would take a little longer to get through the applications....but at least it might weed out the wheat from the chaff. Especially around school holiday times.
My idea for a question Johnny:
Should i post a thread about my SIK custom colour choice?
NO/NEVER/GOD I"M AN IDIOT

I too have been thinking about how to curve unwanted members from joining. I don't know if my ideas will work, or if they are even pheasable, but here is what I came up with:
-Paying to join the forums. Sure it may seem stupid, but I know I would definately make a $5 paypal donation to stay a member, this would definately prevent a majority of dickheads joining, and Scott could get some rewards for creating such an awesome site;) Would be a bit controversial but.
-Membership by invitation? On some other forums Ive been on, you can't register unless you obtain a code. This can be done by a current member giving you one, or there was other sections on the site where you sort of had to read a whole heap of crap to get the code. It may be a bit difficult to implement, and there still were quite a few dickheads on the site:o
-Test type thingo, like what has been suggested in this thread. I think the main thing that will make a test succesful, is that it takes a fairly long time to complete! This way, some idiot looking to join just to talk crap will probably not bother going through the process, and hopefully only the most committed people will join.
-More mods. The mods have the right attitude towards banning, there is no question about that. However I don't think there is enough to sort of keep the dickheads under control. Often when they emerge, you will get a heap of senior members flaming/abusing, yet no real action can be taken. Im not suggesting make lots more, but maybe 4-6 recognisable well known members could help with some real ruthless banning to get the message across.
Thats what I came up with, who knows how practical they would be unless they were put into practice I guess?
Johnny:
Allowing them to choose the obvious right answer out of the outright incorrect ones would just render the test more or less useless. Although that'll at least make them be aware of some of the rules at a glance, but imagine if you are only signing up to parade your e-penis, wouldn't you act sensible when taking the multiple choice questions and return to being a nuisance afterwards? ;)

Are you gonna post up the answers? There's a few in there I'm not sure of...
I'd love some sort of initiation test personally. Particularly if there was a way to show how many times someone failed it before they got through...

Can we also run this test on current members?

If we do that, Farkin's member base will halve overnight.

I never said that. But if it does halve, we'll have to invite rooks back so we have someone to make fun of.:p

Personally I am against controlling who can and cannot join Farkin. Correct me if I am wrong but I get the feeling that people are objecting to the posts that are being posted. Why not make posting a privilege that you have to apply for like you do for trading access.
The reason why I am against this is because I feel that knowledge should be shared not hoarded. There is information on Farkin that is impossible to find anywhere else. It doesn't help that when you are not a member the search button disappears and you don't have access to the vast majority of attachments.
Can someone also tell me where in the FAQ/Forum rules that you sign up to it says what era of the English language is being used, which posts go in which forum, and what you sell in the trading forum and what you sell in other forums. I looked but I couldn't find anything. Either I cannot read (which wouldn't surprise me) or these rules are just arbitrarily made up by some old timers who decided to get together and pick on little kids.

Then maybe an aptitude test for posting privileges?

Sounds like a prime idea. :( Better post as much as I can before this "test" comes into play.

But then we would miss out on threads like this Want to know why your trading access application was denied? (http://forums.farkin.net/showthread.php?t=76964) :p. Seriously though mate, I have no issues with it being a test, especially if it can be automated and take the load off the mods. And if the questions are as loaded as johnny's are even I can pass them.

Perhaps only members who have contributed financially can create topics in all forums except for an introduction forum and maybe parts and stuff. I personally would not have a problem contributing to the site. I wouldn't mind giving something back especially considering I have been browsing ever since the days of DNF.com.

Ok, send me $25 and I promise not to ban you for the rest of the year, unless you break the rules or I feel like it.
