I know this topic gets rehashed alot , but with new products and there use its a topic that can allways be debated . At the moment i am looking at getting new brakes . There are six brakes that i am looking at . 08/ saints, xt`s ,Avid code 5`s , codes , juicey 5`s and juicey 7`s Now are the xt`s better than saints ? The calliper on the 08 xt`s is 20% stronger than the saints and previous xt`s . The 08 xt`s have a pad modulator is it really neccacery ?. With the codes , the difference between the code 5 and code is the pad modulator . Does the pad modulator make a big difference between the two and is it really neccacery .<same question as for the juices .> ??????????
Any help on this would be good ..

Are xt's really more powerful than saints, I seriously doubt it, unless your comparing 08 xt with 06 or 07 saint, and by pad modulator do you mean reach adjuster?

In the Dec/Jan '08 issue of AMB, they reviewed a few brakes, including: Juicey 7, Ultimate, XT and XTR.
They gave good wraps for the Juicey 7 and XT.
Just thought this might help, incase you missed it in the magazine.:)
Edit: Sorry I can't help you in terms of the technicality of the brakes, still new to hydraulic discs, still learning. :D

The saint and xt calliper are exaclly the same until 08 where the xt calliper is 20% stronger <less flex > . In regards to pad modulation there is a red knob on the master cylinder of the codes , juicy 7`s and 08 xt brake . This adjustment knob allows you to manipulate the pistons for pad contact on the disc rotors .

I believe you but I find it hard to believe that their top of the line downhill brake would be weaker than a lesser model

Are you legit? Look at the brake he's asking about. These aint your average rider kind of brakes. You aint needing this much power for xc or your average joe. It'd be downhill for sure or street/dj/trials

It could be anything. XC, Downhill, Trails, park, street, DJ.

Hello there i have juicy 7's at the moment and i have had no problems with them at all but my friends shimano saints work just as well if not better so go with what feels better and not what people tell you good luck.

I suggest from personal experience, reviews etc.
If you are doing DH - Codes or Saints.
XC - XT or Juicys
Park/street etc. - Any of them.
I've run saints, juicy 5s and juicy 3s all on the same bike with the same rotors, I mixed and matched pad compounds a bit and my opinions are:
juicy 3 and 5 are indistinguishable in power and modulation, the clicky levers aren't worth that much, just get the threes.
Saints are more powerful, have a sharper lever feel and are easier to change pads on. but are a a touch more difficult to bleed.
From what I've seen at the shop: codes pull a long way in before the pad contacts and there is nothing you can do about it. unless you like to run you levers so they almost touch the grips when braking you probably won't like them. The new XT levers have better ergonomics but are a bit the same.
If money is no object: get hope minis, you won't be disappointed

What are planning to use them for?
If you are after outright power Codes are head and shoulders above the other ones mentioned. The only things that are better are Gatorbrake/Navigator 6 pots.
If you dont need planet stopping brakes, it's pretty hard to go past a set of XTs.
If your after something super light have a look at the Formula Oros.

The Codes can be adjusted by the adjusting knob at the lever, that's why it is there. You can have the lever pull to the bar, or the lever move jack all, or anything in between.
On a different matter, I love my Codes so much, but the last brakes I had were HFX-9s, so, well, lots of brakes would be better.

I'm going off a pair of shimano xt 4-pots onto a pair of Juicy 7's,
I figuired i realy don't need that much power as a 70kg guy.

Are you freaking insane? 4-pots piss on Juicies from a great height. You're essentially paying money to get a worse brake.
If you are stupid enough to sell the 4 pots, PM me.

Isn't that adjustable?
I've run Hayes and Juicy 7's, Neither are spectacular.
Heard great things about Saints and XT's.
But Sam runs code 5's... Must be fast.
:p

Thanks for the input everyone, Im leading towards the saints ore codes . The brakes are for a dh rig . Do you guys think , go the code 5`s ore pay out the money for the codes ? This might sound vain but i think the code 5`s look better than the codes .

So you narrowed it down to DH/DJ/Street/Trials - bravo:rolleyes:
Apart from XC, you've covered every style of MTB riding!

:p
you can adjust if from bad to worse :p
it's not that bad but I'm yet to feel one that is as snappy as a saint or a Hayes nine.

Hate to be nit picky, but the November 07 dirt mag showcased Sam's bike in the pro bike section. He runs the Code calipers, and couples it with Avid Juicy Carbon black box levers.
The Code 5's are essentially the same as the Code, but does not have the pad contact knob, which I reckon is a fantastic breakthrough in hydro disc brake design.
I have a set of Codes, and if I have any gripes about them, its that they scrub off too much speed! Not such a bad thing sometimes :)

I bought a set of avid bb7 brakes and i tell you they have as much stopping power as hydrolic brakes easily and they are very easy to tune as you can move each pad as you wish. and they don't need much maintenance at all.

you have failed miserably in both you assertions and your ability to not be laughed at.
the BB7s are fantastic FOR A CABLE BRAKE.
the other brakes discussed in here are a few steps above matey
