HD-DVD IS DEAD, BLU-RAY IS THE WINNER! source: Yahoo.com
oh in other news, Fidel Castro has resigned from his position as President of Cuba (and US #1 bad guy) for the last 49 years.
Also President Pervez Musharreff (Leader of Pakistan - incredibly major player in our whole war against terror debacle) has been beaten in the national electons.
But, fuck it! Blu-Ray is the winner!
Nice work Yahoo! Great reporting there....

Sorry for the rant there folks but unfortunately Yahoo! is my (unfortunate) first source for the headlines these days as it's where my emails are hidden and it's headlines do give me a sense of where the general populace's heads are at and tonight's has been a little bit disturbing to say the least.
I've always scoffed at the idea that there's a general dumbing down in society as for every piece of lazy dumb-arse reality tv programming there's usually an absolute gem of a sitcom/satirical news prog hidden away in the darkest reaches of cable or late night TV.
This latest bombshell on the part of mass media however leads me to believe that the idiots have in fact taken over! I know it's only yahoo but the sad fact is that they're just reflection of a great deal of commercial media these days and whilst most won't lead with the massive blu-ray/hddvd revelation, I also doubt they're going to lead with one absolutely historical event and one incredibly internationally influential other when there are stories of horror smashes on the local roads and Britney Spears being spotted buying wedding dresses...
A lot of people called the events of 11th September 2001 a big wake up call for a complacent Developed World. I'm beginning to wonder if we've just hit the Snooze button and rolled over...

It truly is sickening, you have hit the nail on the head Stella.
Castro stepping down is huge, history making news yet I would have missed it if I blinked during the news tonight.
I wonder how many people watching actually knew who he was!
We are an idiot nation controlled by the media and it is very, very sad...

I've just been watching Lateline (Pardon me, Mater I'm orrf to play the Graaahhhnd Piaaarno)
Fidel was pretty much the only Communist leader to come close to getting it right. Cuba is far from a perfect society, but I believe that it's much better now than it would have been had not Fidel, Che & co. kicked the old regime out.
The idea of the world's most successful Communist nation being less than 100 miles from the USA tickles me no end.

How many people's lives outside of Cuba are realistically affected by Fidel (Fidel Who?)? On the other hands, think of the millions of people who haven't been sure which technology to jump into. :p

I was listening to the ABC news whilst eating my evening meal and I heard that Fidel Castro had stepped down, so I looked up expecting to see a big report... but nothing more was said!

Some sort of treaty signed after a war with the Spanish (?) in the 19th century I believe.

oh really? well they are bastards none the less.. they just have that prison their because they don't have to follow their own laws and can treat the prisons however they feel. That just defines america lol so hypocritical. Even though the people in this prison have done terrible things, america apparently created a war against the middle east to "save" the people of these countries from their "horrible" rullers, yet once america captures these people they do the same thing that they are apparently fighting to stop. Makes alot of sense to me...

hmm, a bit of a post pub rant that earlier. Ah well. I'm still a bit mystified by it all.
The funny thing is my folks are actually on holiday in Cuba at the moment. It'd be a fairly weird atmosphere I'd imagine...
you're mystified now? Wait till Katie Holmes has another baby or Nicole Kidman gets a pimple or.......... why do I even know Katie Holmes has had one baby? It is a bit sad that I know this, I have no reason knowing of these things they don't matter in my life and I really don't care, she could pop a flotilla of baby gorillas out of her Cruise abused uterus and I still wouldn't care, actually, I would probably wanna hear about that.

"I run my unit how I run my unit. You want to investigate me, roll the dice and take your chances. I eat breakfast 300 yards from 4000 Cubans who are trained to kill me, so don't think for one second that you can come down here, flash a badge, and make me nervous. "
"Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Whose gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinburg? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago, and you curse the marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That Santiago's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to. "
Ahhh Jack :)
Anyway, back on topic. Of course America has to save Cuba from its dictator, they need to replace him with their own dictator.
For a country that believes so much in democracy, theyve single handedly set it back numerous times for their own political expediency. Iran is a classic example, but theres plenty of them in South America too.

Yes the quality of news reporting does seem to be declining.
My personal beef is the trend over the last few years of TV news stations going live to the scene of a breaking story and then staying with it continuously until it had been resolved and analysed to death with the complete disregard of any other news event that is happening at the time. Even the hourly updates just interrupt some unqualified hack from postulating crap and update the situation itself without letting you know what else is going on in the world.
Israel bombing the crap out of Beirut and the middle east teetering on the brink of dissolving into war? Well who knows because Brittney is having her weekly conniption and Dr Phil is taking 4 hours to tell us that "this girl has problems"
At least there is still ABC, SBS and CBC (Canadian equivalent) to keep the standards up.

From what i understand , Che and Fidel started with the right idea , and then Fidel took over and sucked the country dry . I dont think its is better there than if it was a democracy , sure he finished a bad regime but then he raped the country himself.
as far as i am concerned he didnt even come close to getting it right.

I think the US led trade embargos on Cuba have more to do with the poverty there than Castro feathering his own nest.
There's lots and lots of bullshit written about Castro's Cuba, 90% of which is written by the very Batista supporters he kicked out. It's far from a utopia, but more people are better off under Castro than they would have been under Batista.

yeah sorry mate, i should of explained myself better.
Fidel didn't "rape" the country for himself, that's propaganda generated by a certain, large capitalist country who were suddenly faced with a leader who wouldn't deal with them.
Cuba was a very corrupt country under Batista and this left Fidel very lttle rescources to work with(also another reason for him to seek soviet support).
i wasn't having a shot at you, but American propaganda is very hard to erase from people's minds.
peace.

Mmmm... So what's the full story on this victory for Blue-Ray?

20-02-2008, 06:54 PM
A few studios pulled the plug on HD DVD and Blue Ray had better support etc. Neither have enough market penetration yet to have used that as a gauge so it just came down to who ended up with the most studios on their side.

this may seem like yet more futile rantings from a tired and hungover old man but this was in the Top 5 most read articles in The Age today. IS this what people consider news? I think I'm going to have to go back to bed. Somebody wake me up when the apocalypse is here...

Olsens coffee 'spiked' with full fat milk
By Dylan Welch
May 23, 2008 - 10:25AM
Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen in New York on May 5, 2008.
If you've been noticing that Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have been piling on the micrograms in recent weeks, a US gossip magazine has unearthed the horrible truth - a barista has been putting full-cream milk in their non-fat lattes.
The story, which is sure to send a chill down the spine of fat-fearing caffeine consumers everywhere, said a former barista at a Starbucks in West Village, New York, had been spiking the rake-thin twins' coffees with full fat milk.
"The barista thought the Olsens were too thin, so whenever they ordered their usual drink, he would replace the skim-milk with full-fat!" tittered an anonymous "source".
The twins always ordered 'grande nonfat lattes" from the US coffee chain, the magazine wrote.
When approached for comment a spokesperson for the Olsen twins, who began their careers as nine-month-olds on the American sitcom, Full-House, said: "This is ridiculous."
Fair comment, one would think.
