Im about to buy something from the States and the seller said I can use pay pal to pay for the item.

The seller looks legit and I dont have any reasons to not trust him.

How ever, I do have one question, because this purchase is out side of ebay, will paypal still cover me if the seller is dodgy?

I know they will pay up to $2000 if its a ebay deal gone wronge.

Im spending $950 on this item, so I just want to know before I pay up.

Thanks Guys

I've had a deal go bad using eBay and Paypal... The seller did not send me anything after paying $60. I put a complaint in to Paypay, who said I was in the right. They tried to get the money back from the seller, but the seller had vanished, and they weren't able to get any money back from him/her. Paypal gave me back about $12. They couldn't do anything else for me, apparently.

Lessons learned:
Don't rely on Paypal to cover you when things go wrong.
Don't EVER buy anything from Hong Kong (2 different buyers in two weeks, first time I've ever bought from Hong Kong, both duds.)

is COD a safer option??

on the other hand ive never had any issues with paypal or HK sellers.

you always take that risk when buying stuff off the internet. is the benefit/lose worth it?

Before I say yes ... was this originally on ebay ???

If the transaction was originally on ebay ... then you WON'T be covered. There is an Ebay rule about this.

However, if you found the seller outside of ebay ... and pay via paypal, then you will be covered. Eg, a number of online stores now offer paypal as a settlement option (eg, Beyond bikes, Universal Cycles ... Fishpond - books).

However, there are ways around this ... ie, just make sure you don't use any ebay references (eg, item number) ... and make sure you tell the seller to keep his postage receipts ... keep all your emails until you get your package.

I tend to use paypal as my shipping insurance ... there is no cost to the buyer so alls good ... just takes 30 or 60 days (can't remember exact) to sort it all out if you have problems, but relatively painless.

Paypal gave me back about $12. They couldn't do anything else for me, apparently.
Thats a surprise ... I had a pear shaped but low value transaction and I got all of it back ... I guess I'll read the paypal fine print before I use again.

Exactly!

Generally I try to steer clear of ebay, I have also been stung once before
I found this rare record I really wanted payed my 40 bucks and nothing
Paypal took forever to respond and a didnt get the cash back.

Ebay Relies heavily of trust. So if something is to good to be true its a scam!!

I do stuff like that all the time, as long as the seller is legit (if you have any doubts don't go through with it) you should be fine. Recently I got an item posted to a wrong adress, Im trying to contact paypal so I can get a phone number or something (they are in the US)

On the other hand, has anyone contacted the lost mail centre? And got stuff back?
