My itrip is pissing me off and my current CD player doesnt play MP3s so im going to purchase a new CD player headunit with a front AUX port so i can plug my iPod straight in thurr. Just looking a buying at a cheap unit, for now, something around 100-150 bucks. Its just going through five stock/standard speakers which deliver quite a good quality sound actually.
Or would it be worth spending a bit more?
What brands/models would you recommend?
As far as looms, I've got a Pioneer in there now so i'm guessing the swap would be easier with another Pioneer.
If you push your budget to about 220 you can get something pretty decent, im not great with models sorry. Ive found that sub $200 units just seem to be junk, especially if you want alot of functionality. Buying a Pioneer should make it a straight swap.
BTW - you owe me a new perscription for glasses, after staring at your avatar for 5mins trying to work out if it was my eyes that were screwed!

I was looking into the same thing a while back. The sonys and the kenwoods seem to be the cheapest mp3 with aux front port, around 120-130 I have seen them. I ended up picking up a jvc, purely for the look, feel and for something different. It only cost me a little more at ~145, but the nicer dials and looks made the 20 dollars worth it for me. Most of the mp3/aux jvcs don't get below 150 on special, mine was a slightly outdated model.
I've been told many times as well by salesman (yes, I know) that at the cheaper end of the scale, there is no real difference in component quality (laser etc) between say pioneer/sony/kenwood/jvc etc

In that link above, I've seen the DEH-1050E for $99 at WOW, and the DEH-2050MPG at around $150. You'd be better off checking out the junk mail for prices imo.

Keep it under $150. Unless your planning to add in 6*9s or a subwoofer, which would cost $500+, don't worry about it.
As to the best deck, take a look at some of the specials at JB Hifi or similar. There are some good Panasonic, Sony's and Kenwoods to be had for that price.

I bought a Pioneer DEH-5950 about 2 months ago(on the same day i bought my car, i know thats pretty bad). It has full ipod control(you can chose songs on your ipod through the head unit, similar to that of using the ipod itself) and it charges your ipod, plus it also has a 5.56mm jack(headphone size) if you use another brand mp3 player. Hit up strathfield or something, should be able to get it for around $300.
I know its more than what you are looking to spend, but i thought i may as well say what i had bought.
As for pioneer-pioneer swapping, my car came with a(shit) aftermarket pioneer head unit, which i replaced with a better pioneer head unit. All i had to do was take the faceplate off, take the actual head-unit out, and undo the big plug(speakers and ofa crap all in one), and the arial(sp?), and connect it to the new one and slide her in. Bobs ur uncle, shes all good to go, at least in my car

Thoughts on cheaper, smaller, less reputable brands?

Most headunits these days tend to come with an aux-in plug on the front, such as Sony's from Supercheap Auto, which are in ur budget especially when they are on sale for cheaper than RRP. Also, some Sony's that look more appealing because they're more expensive often aren't worth it, as the only difference between them and the model below them is that they have a sub-out, which you wouldn't need.
Apart from that, junk mail FTW. Strathfield often have some killer deals, same with JB HiFi.
