Having done a bit of playing around with lasers recently, I have to wonder what exactly the point is...
A few femtoseconds... Yes, so you can reduce a very very tiny thing (how many times smaller than a human hair was it again?) to plasma by pumping an instantaneous huge pulse of light with effectively zero duration into it...
Aside from a cool set of numbers to proclaim, why would you? Lot of effort for very short (if intense) bang.
Beyond "because we can" I don't get the point...

SHOOP DA WHOOP!!!!!!!!!!!
I fecking love that shit.
IMA FIIIRINNNNN MUH LAZER!
Such intense beams could help scientists develop better proton and electron beams for radiation treatment of cancer, among other applications.
There you go. Blast cancer in 30 billionths of a millionths of a second!
