Having done a bit of playing around with lasers recently, I have to wonder what exactly the point is...

A few femtoseconds... Yes, so you can reduce a very very tiny thing (how many times smaller than a human hair was it again?) to plasma by pumping an instantaneous huge pulse of light with effectively zero duration into it...

Aside from a cool set of numbers to proclaim, why would you? Lot of effort for very short (if intense) bang.

Beyond "because we can" I don't get the point...
