What to buy in order to build a bike?
hello I have planned to build a bike and have got pretty much all the spec worked out what I am buying. I have a budget so I will be buying part buy part I know to buy the frame first but I will get that for my birthday so I am not sure on which parts to buy first? Can someone help. I am thinking of buying;
1. Bars and stem and grips.
2.Brakes
3.Forks.
4. Wheelset
5. Cranks
6. Bits and peices.

What do you reckon.

If your going to build up a bike, then it isn't necessary what order in which you buy the parts, if your missing a part you can't ride the bike ;)

you my friend are an idiot. If you read the post you would see that I do no what parts I want but I thought it would be better to go in a certain order so you can build the bike up as you go and not go backwards and forwards. e.g obviously buy the wheelset at once so the bike shop can lace it for you. you my friend sound like a begginer at farkin and riding.

They sound like pretty good stages. Are you going SS or gears?
Are you planning to keep the costs to a certain limit with each buy?
As in buying with each paycheque?
This is one way to do it. Especially as if your not set on shopping at a particular place, you can fish around for specials and deals.

Each has benefits. Waiting and saving for the whole thing at once means you can get a bigger discount if your buying a wheelset, forks and all the labour, ect.

Im doing the same thing at the moment, just brought the frame, and deciding on weather to buy in stages or all at once. I'll probably end up going in stages because im to impatient, haha. :)

Post up a spec list for me to gander at, I might be able to point you to a few good deals at the moment.. yes ive been procrastinating from study and have been pricing up my spec list :D

1. Forks (so you know what hub type you want.)

2. whole wheelset (including tyres) and whether or not your going singlespeed or not descides your rear hub.

3. bars, stem and grips. might aswell get seat, seatclamp and seatpost with that aswell.(headset too if the frame doesnt come with one)

4. Cranks, sprocket, chain, pedals and BB (depends if you're going bmx style cranks or whatever)

5. brakes.

then you have your whole bike. brakes are really the last thing id buy, as you can just roll brakeless for a while :D

but if you buy in bundles like stated above, the shops may discount you because of the amount of money your spending, but dont count on it.

a spec list would be a great help to.

cheers.

Buy whatever first, just look around on the For Sale forums and online stores to see what's on special and what deals you can get. If you wait your time you can get some great deals. I know some people who have spent about half what they would have just buying a complete bike and ended up with something better.

best and cheapest way of doing most things like this that i know of, buy a good spec stp, sell of the frame cheap, and buy yourself a new frame of you liking

end up with a good spec non stp bike that putting together piece by piece would take ages to do

ok well today I went to town and had a chat with all the bike shops. I ended up being conned to buy a bike so I have a deposit down lol. I am happy with it. It isn't the most expensive bike so I will do it up. It is a 2008 kona cowan. yeeeeeeeeeeeeeew

And what makes this even more of a waste of space is that he has posted in about a billion F/S threads declaring his interest in the bike for sale in that particular thread, make up your mind kid! If you can't even settle on a bike, you'd be buggered trying to build one up.

umm what about your 250 broooo

Hey I have put a deposit on a norco 250 and planning to race 4x. I was wondering on the conditions of racing such as;
are you aloud to race with single speed
do you need a fullface hemet to race
any other conditions
adam

lol. OWNED

there was a huge delay on the 250 therefore letting me go back on my decision. So the next best thing was the kona cowan.

Brilliant, those that don't care and think this is a waste of space are:
1) reading this thread
2) posting responses.
Oh the irony of it all!

ok well despite all the crap that has been sent in this thread I have received a few p.m's with the answers I was looking for such as; Get the headset and the seatpost and the frame all in one so you know they fit. Thanks to the people who have helped and for the rest try reading the sticky " chill out be nice " it was just a question I was wondering about so instead of spoiling people on farkin and making this forum look like a joke just answer if you can help or don't at all.
thanks again to the helpers.
