Hannah isn't racing at all this year apparently, left his Cannondale contract to spend time at home or something.

Usually the riders will list what city they were staying in etc.

The track is a really pedally flat which isn't one of Hill's strong points, so that might explain his result there.

[rampant internet spectulation by someone who doesn't know sam]I think its fairly well acknowleged that Sam prefers steep and technical tracks and has never particularly liked, nor done well on the Sea Otter track-which is the opposite.[rampant internet spectulation by someone who doesn't know sam]

Well I might have to ask him... Then it should clear up this cloud of internet speculation :)

Anyone who read the press release from Iron Horse would know that neither Sam nor Brendan Fairclough were going to be too serious at Sea Otter. They were using the event to test their new bikes.

Unfortunately for Sam, he also took a fall the previous day and re-hurt his shoulder, which is still mending from another injury. He had to withdraw from the slalom event altogether.

sad news, some guy died as well

San Jose mountain biker Mark Reynolds, 48, died after his bicycle crashed during the Sea Otter Classic competition at Laguna Seca Raceway on Saturday, the Monterey County Sheriff's Office reported.

Deputies said that around 12:30 p.m., Reynolds, an experienced competitor, failed to negotiate a narrow wooden bridge and crashed into a dirt embankment, suffering head and neck injuries.

Reynolds was taken by helicopter to Natividad Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The coroner's office plans to conduct an autopsy on Monday to determine exact cause of death.

Officials with the race said it was the first death in the event's 17-year history.

Reynolds was a well-known mountain bike designer and had applied for a U.S. patent for a bicycle derailleur he designed that allowed riders to smoothly shift between two front chain rings. He was also a principle in a San Jose-based Web site development company called Domino Insight.

Friends and colleagues posting on a mountain biking Web forum expressed shock at the news of his death and described Reynolds as an innovator and a passionate mountain biker.
