Is this wheel larger than a 700c? I had a GT years ago with weird size wheels, they where 650c from memory. was actually a great fun bike came with Drop bars with the gear levers on the sides of the road style brake levers.
was a good bike for long fire trails and dirt roads, was wondering if this might have been a forerunner to the current 29" ers?

hey
The 650 is roughly around the 26" size its considered a kids road bike, or even some ladies ride 650's as they are a smaller version of the 700c road wheels
apparenlty you can run some 700c tyres on the 29er's but i havent personaly tryed this as yet but would be intresting to see if it actually works out

700c and 29er wheels are essentially the same size, give or take a millimetre or 2. 650c is the road equivalent to a 26" MTB wheel. Sounds to me like you're describing a cyclocross bike of some type, although a lot of triathlon bikes are made with 650c wheels.
I doubt that it would have been a forerunner to current 29ers. 29ers have actually been around for some time however have only recently enjoyed a growth in popularity.
One of the original 29ers was the Diamondback Overdrive and Overdrive Comps, circa 1993 (I think). They came with Panaracer Smoke tyres made specifically for DB.

Yes, you can run 700c tyres on 29ers. I use Schwalbe Marathon's (700x35c) on my 29er as my commuter tyre during the week and swap out to Maxxis Ignitors or Racing Ralphs on the weekend...

Memory is kicking in , it was a GT tachyon, Wheels were 700D not sure if many where sold out here.
I used it as a commuter from eltham to the city, It was great fun in flat singletrack and faster on road and the bike tracks than a standard mtb, came with 3 sets of tyres Knobby, semi knob and slicks I used the semi knobs mostly. Was a John Tomac inspired purchase, he did a few races on a Yeti with drop bars many yrs ago.
I did race it once, was a little scarry down steep downhills, my other bike at the time was a fisher CR7.
