View Full Version : private dh tracks. what are tour thoughts?
my mate and i are part of the way of building a pretty good dh track and it is on private property. i was wondering what you would pay to ride a private dh track you know the money would go to maintaining the track and other uses like this. what are your thoughts?

it sounds good, i would pay but only so long as the track was of good quality and i get insurance cover within the payment.
also id be pretty pissed if you were building in my yard like your "location" suggests

It would have to be a pretty good track as the only place in Aus you actually pay to ride are at Thredbo, Buller and the few other privately owned race tracks.
It's probably not feesable anyway unless you have alot of riders there, if you just let them in and they give you money and they crash you are liable to get sued a shit load of money. Insurance costs a bomb. Keep the track for yourself. Less maintanence, less worries more fun.

Agreed, if it's on your own private property, best to keep it to you and your buddies for riding, that way it'll only need maintenance from your own riding and not some idiot that's ripped up that berm you just spent hours working on.
It would definately have to be a really good track otherwise it would seem you are being stingie
good idea i don;t wanna be sued money if someone crashes better keep it to our selves!

One way to do this might be for you to affiliate with MTBA as a private promoter. Then, if you run "events" or "organised training" on your track where people pay to ride, both you and the riders would be covered by the MTBA insurance as long as the riders were either MTBA members or they had purchased an MTBA day license when they ride on your track.
You would have to meet certain MTBA requirements in terms of support at the events, risk management, first aid availability etc.
You would need to contact MTBA about all of this.

Would the cost cover shuttles or would it be a hike a bike sort of thing? If you had transport you might have a bit of a chance

just keep it between you and your mates, i've made a few tracks and tried to keep them quiet but once heaps of people start riding it and not helping with maintenence it takes all the fun out of it

have a look at Cameron_15 s trail building thread, he charges $2 or $5 cant remember, but you have to fix what you wreck and come on build days if you want to ride. I dont think its a good idea to get people to pay, its about the love of riding, having guys to ride with, not scrounging a couple of bucks here and there.
More people will come if you let people that build ride, and your track will get better for it.
Just my opinion do what you want, but think about it, do you want more people to ride with or a small amount of money?

yes well, people have came, they have built, they have ridden. the tracks have improved a lot since i have i have hosted the days. but it is getting to a stage where people want north shore and other stuff. i can't fund all this myself. the few dollars donation doesn't go towards me, it goes towards the track. i put money in as well.
all of the money goes straight into the track. i don't even touch the money as i am not in charge of that. my friend nick, who i trust completely is. the money will pay for wood, chicken wire, padding, a set of shovels, maticks and other tools to help build the track and maybe a little shed thing like a clubhouse.
the first thing we are planning on buying is another ramp. at around $50 a ride day will pay for it.
even if the money was going to me it would still barely cover lunch. i wouldn't make any money out of it. its only a couple of dollars not much at all really.
why do i open my backyard up to the public? for the love of riding. i want people to share in my property and have fun riding it with or without me there. i beleive a couple of dollars as a donation is fair enough.

yeh but lets admit it, your property is way cooler. i mean, it's in the blue mountains. i bet your track could be like twice the size of mine.

not legally:D. its pretty gnarly landscape though, lots of potential for drops and big freeride stuff. I think we can call it even. yo have heaps of lines, and more clear area, if you look to the sides of my track, thats what the entire thing was, i've done so much bench cutting (cutting into the hill).
