It was caused by water flooding into the tanks and a chemical reaction taking place making the liquid fertilizer turn into gas.
There were 5 fail safes, they all failed.
Because the gas is heavier than air it floated just above the ground, thus the children died first.
They all could have been saved if Union carbide had told the citizens of Bhopal that if they placed wet clothes at the gaps in the widows/doors that would have prevented the gas from coming into the houses.
Ill do some more later, im tired now.

I'll scan you something from a book I have which may help you out. It's called "World Famouse Catastrophes" by Ian Schott.
Here it is in PDF format:

I hope it gives you some info, it is a general article.

There should be a doco floating around youtube, and a wiki about the stuffup and the company.
Don't plagarise. Not a concern if its for highschool, however.

in 2002 Dow Corporation bought Union Carbide. The still refuse to clean up the site even thoug Indian law requires they do. This is despite fronting $2.2 billion USD for asbestos affected former UC employees in Texas.
Warren Andrson, former UC CEO is wanted in India for crimes related to the disaster. UC itself is charged with culpable manslaughter but is yet to face an Indian court.
the $470 million payout allowed between $300 and $500 USD per victim. 20 000 people died, 120 000 people suffered permanent injury.

Union Carbide is also responsible for the major polloution of the Homebush and parramatta river area. They also developed alot of AGENT ORANGE because it was illegal to produce in the US.
