Update 10am Friday: No word yet on any concerns regarding the weather, so things are still good to go.

Today's THE day and we still have two Australian men mixing it up, Jared Graves (http://www.jaredgraves.net) progressed through quite easily and Kamakazi just scraped through for the final day of competition. Luke Madill didn't fair so well, falling victum to some first corner mayhem.
Following yesterdays competition, the field that started at 32 has been reduced to just 16. The women's top 16 will complete all their racing today after only having to do their seeding runs yesterday.
Todays racing:
11:00am - Women's Semifinals Run 1
11:08am - Men's Semifinals Run 1
11:30am - Women's Semifinals Run 2
11:38am - Men's Semifinals Run 2
12:00pm - Women's Semifinals Run 3
12:08pm - Men's Semifinals Run 3
12:30pm - Women's Final Run
12:40pm - Men's Final Run
Live Viewing
You can either view the race live on channel 7 (who have done a pretty good job so far), or on the yahoo7 live website (a bit temperamental) here (http://au.sports.yahoo.com/olympics/live-video/). **Update: Apparently due to a conflict of interest between Yahoo and 7, there will be no live web stream of the event on Yahoo.
Live Results
For semi live results, keep refreshing this page here (http://results.beijing2008.cn/WRM/ENG/Schedule/CB.shtml).
Video Clips
Clips from yesterday can be found here (http://au.sports.yahoo.com/olympics/video/-/sports/bmx/).
All times are AEST.

F*** Oi OI oI, it was an advertising campaign from MC Donalds wasn't it? I guess that doesn't matter, I shouldn't be such a kill joy, I just hate corporate kill joys.
Thanks heaps Scott for the times etc, should be fun watching.
Just letting people know that according to Yahoo7 site there isnt any live streaming of the BMX today for the semis and finals on the link above ie
http://au.sports.yahoo.com/olympics/live-video/
That was only scheduled for the seeding and quarters, so dont get your hopes up. Lets just hope they put it on TV.

Channel 7 are advertising it as being on "later", so fingers crossed. I'm still sceptical though, they might decide to show synchronised swimming or something instead, fucktards.

Heavy rain has forced the postponment of Thursday's semi-finals in the BMX bicycle competition.
Action in the men's and women's events had been due to start at 11:00 am (0300 GMT) but the bad weather saw this put back to 3:00 pm (0700 GMT). If the rain continues it could be delayed until Friday.

no that would be 5pm AEST
But wasn't it 11am AEST (but 9am Bejing time)? So wouldn't they use the same time zone unless they specify otherwise?

I think it's 3pm. As the news update says racing was to start at 11am (9am China time), so that'd be 1pm China time for racing.

I pray that this isn't the case! Hopefully the Chinese have still got a few of their "weather rockets" kicking around.
Such a shame they've had to postpone it, which means I'll have to get back to doing some work:(

Just wanted to say that the Quarters were great! I am in an office where everyone stopped to watch it when it was on..and that is with most people here not even knowing what a bike is!!! as it is just such a great spectator event.
Can wait for the finals, even if the rain is making me wait today!!:D

21-08-2008, 11:52 AM
Could the rain be due to the fact that Gravey is on such good form and we know the track record with Toowoomba and wet races????? He must be wearing a T-bar mtb shirt under his race jersey.
Is there a location on the web where we can get update-to-date statuses on the event?
Try here man (http://beijingbmx.loopd.com/Members/beijingbmx/Default.aspx)...look for the headcam lap with Mike Day....kinda makes you realise how big those jumps really are:eek:

I just confirmed this with my sister who is a journalist covering the event at the venue in Beijing.
She thinks its extremely unlikely for any cancellation to occur. Forecast is for sunshine tomorrow and they can always run the event on Saturday or Sunday.
The postponing affects people in different ways - she was looking forward to getting hammered tonight.

People like this douche that keep saying "....They took out softball for BMX...." needs to do a little bit more research.
There are 18 cycling events in 2004 and there are 18 cycling events in 2008 including BMX. They took out 1km time trial for the BMX!! I guess variety is not in Robert's vocabulary!!

Two australians got 2nd and 4th, jill kintner 3rd and the big great britain favourite had a massive crash on the first corner. Thats what happens when you ride with your visor down kids. Let that be a lesson to you!!!

Second semi with graves and kamakazi, graves finished 2nd and Kama kazi got caught up and finished 7th.

They just need to take the focus of crashing and more onto the racing but its still awesome.

dirty move read, got what she deserved
Do you really feel that was a dirty move? Maybe she was trying to avoid such a sharp corner considering she washed out on a berm before?

That's my sentiments.. the commentators were the one's heaping it on the South African.. that's bad class.
Dozer, I was mainly holding my breath when they showed the rider's view of the start ramp!! I was even feeling nervous. I've never raced BMX but I just thought "Wow, that is scary. Racing bar to bar with other riders on a track like that!". Amazing stuff.

Bad luck Jared, I was standing on a chair at the Sports and Rec Centre at work yelling!!!! Then throwing polite abuse at the Saffa. But to his credit, it could have happened to anyone.

Hey I'm a South African anyone got any problems they can talk to me!
There were plenty of stacks all week, and he was trying to make a passing move which just didn't pay off.
Unlucky for Jarred, but don't make it personal, it's just the way it goes.
Hope Jarred is at the World Cup so I can give him a round of aplause great effort for a mtb'r.

picked a real doozy of a rider to washout into
I am cataloguing all of the olympic bmx right now. Graves, Madill & Kama now entered into ABC archives to be preserved as olympians until the world ends!

'Dirty move' may be a bit harsh - perhaps it would be better to describe her move as overly ambitious or reckless... It certainly wouldn't have won her any friends if she'd taken out Anne-Caro. Can anybody think of a more accomplished rider? Multiple World Cup and World Champ and now Olympic Champ - bloody freak!

I feel so sorry for the guy (Graves). The blowout at Fort Bill last year, being crashed out by another rider in Italy this year, and crashed out again at the Olympics. That photo of him sitting with his head in his hands at Italy ... man, he's proving a lot by keeping his chin up and continuing to perform so well.
I understand this is just the way racing goes, and you can't be too vindictive towards the rider who crashes Jared out, but I have to say, if he's riding in Canberra next weekend, and something like this happens, I imagine I will feel like decking whoever knocks him out of the race. Hopefully he just gets so far in front it won't be of concern ....
Great effort though to get as far as he did.

ive never felt so much sympothy for a rider! unlucky jared. Ohwell im sure this will just motivate him more.
Just watched the replay over here in the UK. Gutted :(
In the women's final, I think that Reade's move in the last corner wasn't deliberately dirty, just a dick move. There was no way she was sticking it and if she hadn't hit AC she would have been over the edge of the berm anyway. AC wasn't even knocked off line though. Because she is an axe, made of meat. What a rider, head and shoulders above any female bike rider ever in my opinion.
Jared got a bad gate in his final but his first corner move was a fucking stunner. Again, I don't think the move that brought him down was deliberately dirty, just another dick move that was never going to stick. As soon as I saw the Saffa setting up inside Graves I was cringing. No way was he keeping it upright on that line at that pace.

Yeah, I'm starting to think Jared has a massive target on his back. Ah well, stellar effort on his behalf in not only making the final, but putting in an effort that made the top 3 fight. He'd be ride great over the two days of competition and I'm sure if the final was run a couple times he would win at least one of them.
The year is not completely over though, Jared will be attending Canberra next weekend so lets hope he can take out the 4x and get a little bit back.

Graves had a shit gate but his first corner was unreal. His exit speed seemed very high considering his line. Many riders were hitting that line and had no speed down the second straight. The first jump out of the corner is what cost him. He over jumped a little and lost a bunch of momentum and thats when Day, Robinson and Nhlapo lined the inside run into turn 2.
Watch the race and check out Donny Robinson's line into the turn. A lot more risky then Nhlapo's. Once again, I'm already sick of people saying it was a take out move and that it wasn't on. I idol Graves and was extremely cut when he crashed but I never saw that move from Nhlapo as a take out move.
I think we all just need to be proud of what Graves, Kama, Madill, Callisto and Bailey did for Australia. Makes me extremely proud to be Australian and more so a Bmxer.

Echos my sentiment exactly. Nhlapo just came into that corner too hot, too inside on the berm and on the wrong side of Jared to pull that off. I think there was a chance he could have pulled it, and wow... that would have been incredible... but anybody who's raced BMX before knows that when the stakes are high, you've got ground to make up, and you're cookin', the brain usually doesn't have time to make split-second judgments on whether to back off from a move or not... I don't begrudge Nhlapo. What a great rider, and after Graves, I really wanted him to medal as well. :(
Now Reade... she definitely had more than a split second to think about her corner before making that dumb decision. Instead of pulling on the brakes, it looks like she wanted to change her line to conserve her speed. Bad decision. She could be THE female BMX'er if she matched her power with a little improvement in skills and better judgment.
I think that first corner by Jared will go down in the history as one of the textbook examples of how to come from behind in the holeshot through the corner. Stunning.

Graves and Kama were just on Channel 7's "Yum Cha" morning show. Poor bloke (Graves) was gutted, but great to see him getting some exposure. I wish they would tell everyone about all of his other abilities, so that it isn't just us that know how good he is!!!

I agree entirely about Nhlapo, just an unfortunate outcome for all involved, I'm not so sure about Reade though. I don't think it was necessarily a takeout move, but to me it stank of a dive way too deep to try and force Anne-Caro wider again, and shake her up. I don't think Reade had much of a chance to catch AC on the final straight unless she made her lose some of her speed. I bet know she's just wishing she'd been a bit more conservative and held on for silver though.
Hindishgt, ay?

Yep. You got it. I guess Reade just got a bit greedy and wanted that gold, even though she had almost no chance at that point of getting it. Now she's got nuttin'.:(

Awesome to see the BMX on tv. I had all the boys from SBR watching the final and although they hadn't even heard of him we were all devo'ed to see him go out. Either way proud of his efforts.
