The story so far:
I had an Intense Tazer from 1999-2001.
Loved it. Only bike I wish I never sold.
So when one of the old models (I didn't want a VPP model!) came up for sale - in perfect condition - I couldn't resist...

Shim to run my Crank Brothers Joplin seatpost.
Lol I want to see this in action, its not gonna make much difference in saddle height.. more of moving the saddle back.

Hehe. Yeah, the Joplin is more about riding to the track then dropping it when there. It does make some difference. The post is too low right now (that was pre-cut by Rhys) so a it more as standard height will be better.
This will be my stuff-about bike.
I'm too old and slow to bother racing (let alone getting to the races when you've got 2 kids ruling your life...).
I'm running a 38T front ring with an 11-34 rear & long cage derailleur.
I didn't want to get more specific than that, as all the gear is swappable with the Trance (takes about 45 minutes to transfer everything between the 2 frames).

Looks very nice. A lot of money spent on it, but well worth it. Are you using it as a 4X bike, or just a kinda do all bike?

Spec list up...
Frame was virtually new.
Rhys had built it, ridden it twice and then stripped it and hung the frame.
It has 3 scratches on it (headtube, been scraped on the outer edge, but a light filing and it's invisible and doesn't touch the headset), one where the chain rubs the frame in the smallest cog (chainline can be fixed a bit) and a slight rubbing on the outer edge of the right dropout. Non of which you'd notice.
Yeah, the shock looks short. In fact, the spring looks shorter than the last one, but the shock is the correct length. The spring's an 800lb 1.55", which matches the shock stroke, but I can bottom it just bouncing on it (fat bastard 93kg...). I can't help thinking it's not the right spring, but I'll switch to the Float RP23 tonight anyway.
Other things I noticed in the build: the headtube is massively thick. like 4-5mm; the ISCG tabs (which I'm not using as my chainguide is a BB mount) are neatly recessed from the BB flange. Nice; all interfaces are reamed, faced and tapped at Intense, so the frame requires no prep; it's beefier than my original frame (more M1-like rear, no front derailleur stub).
Only Yeti is similar for quality of workmanship. These bikes are amazing. There's something like 3 metres or welding on this frame...

This has the spec of a pros bike. Seriously a professional rider would not complain one bit with your bike he would be super stoked.

what is the stroke of that shock? it looks way short!
Stroke is 1.5" (38mm) and it's a 6.5" (165mm) eye-to-eye.
800lb spring - and it's too soft! I need a 950lb!
It's crap, really.
Now looking for a new unit to replace it...

nice build. i also like the old one (fsr) better than the vpp one... i had 6.6 vpp and the rear end was soooo flexy (sideways)
for the shock, are going to replace it? i once saw manitou swinger with piggyback in 165x1.5in size...

Yeah, I'm looking now. Posted a thread last night.
Been in contact with Tim Flooks at TF Tuned in the UK about a Push'ed Fox Float RP23 (tuned to the frame/my weight, too).
I think this frame deserves the best shock I can buy. Mind you, that's going to cost me almost as much as the frame did...!
The TF Tuned/Push upgraded shock would do the one thing this frame needs - reduce the required sag (slackens the head angle too much) and keep plent in reserve for hard landings. Prefect.
Looking at a slightly reduced travel fork, too... PM'd a Farkineer about a fork I hope to pick up...
Then there's just a slightly longer seatpost.
Thinking of Titec telescopic, so I can have the post at the right height for bombing and then lift it up a little for riding to and from places.
I was going to use my Joplin, but it's too small (Intense use 30.9 now, but this frame's 31.8, and you can't get a shim to fit). Also, the seat angle probably won't do the Joplin any good, so the Titec's a good, cheap option (with a 3 year, no questions asked DH and Freeride warranty...)

Hehehe... looked at a few old Tazers, but this was the clear winner. RCDH is mad for selling it to me, but that's my win!
So I'm back in the owners club!
Just need to sort out the shock and seatpost and I'll be tearing the tyres off it.

What's going to happen to the Trance now? Will it be rebuilt as a specialty bike or sold or just kept to swap the parts between them both?

What's going to happen to the Trance now? Will it be rebuilt as a specialty bike or sold or just kept to swap the parts between them both?
Plan is to pick up a few parts (well, it's now $950 worth on my list!) so I can swap over bits in about 20 minutes.
I'm working it out now, but basically, the rear shifter setup, brakes, bar/stem/grips/controls and wheels/chain will just move from one bike to the other.
The Tazer's most likely getting a 2nd hand Reba Team Air U-Turn on Thursday (which will allow me to match front to rear suspension better), plus new cranks/BB, seatpost, headset and shock from the US (damn Fox not letting me buy for half price from the US!!) and then it's built.
Reba Race Fork, Deus XC cranks (with triple rings and front shifter) will go back onto the Giant.
Then all the other parts are transferable in about 20 minutes (the front shifter just bolts onto the SRAM Matchmaker, and off I ride). Hardest part is the rear derailleur cable, but that's changeable in 3 minutes. I have 2 cut to length and bonded so they don't fray or need crimps.
One day, I might complete the Tazer more so it's even easier, but I like the stuff I have and it seems pointless to have 2 of everything when it's so quick to change... I am a bit mental! :D

Only Yeti is similar for quality of workmanship. These bikes are amazing. There's something like 3 metres or welding on this frame... Every M1 I owned or looked at was bent when comparing the seat post to the rear wheel. The shocks hit the frames on some, can't remember the rest.
Rad bike though, I made an offer on it myself.
How does it compare to the trance?
Can't you just sell the trance now?

Hmm. Not great to hear about the M1s. Both my Tazers have been about as straight as you can get with monocoques. No shock clearance issues on either.
You can, of course, configure the frame into a non-ideal setup where you could catch the cranks on the seat stays, but they don't recommend those configurations for that reason. I can't complain.
Now, the Trance... that will be rebuilt.
I've taken the parts off it to build the Tazer so I can play with it.
My intention is to slowly change parts back to the Trance as I get Tazer specific parts, which I'm picking up either 2nd hand, closeout-sale cheap or otherwise. Kinda vintage, but with better suspension. Eventually there will be 2 complete bikes.
The Tazer has been bought as a keeper, so it's there for the long haul.
Can't see myself loving it any less when I'm 50... I'll hang it on the wall if I ever stop riding!

Thought I'd subject you lot to some new pics until I get the new gear...
Can't ride the friggin' thing because of the rear shock (spring is too soft, bottoms out dead easily.
I've since found out from Intense in the US that it's 100lbs/inch under specification!
Running a 90mm stem (I ran an 80mm on the last one) until I get the forks sorted (tomorrow, I hope) and the rear shock arrives, too.

The red doesn't match, but I think I'll respray the lowers black.
I've got new decals hopefully on the way.
BUT, the 100mm travel is perfect.
Has 115 in reserve, and I can take it down to 85 (to match the 3" rear setting) in about 5 seconds...!
Bike already feels much more balanced. Should be perfect with the new shock.

Yeah, Ross, the Fire Engine is close to rideable now.
Yes, it's a post inside a post. I'll cut it low for playing but still be able to put it up a bit to actually ride!
Might actually paint the forks to match the Intense Red. Must email Intense to get a colour code.

My goodness. Shes absolutly gorgeous mate! Well done!
I daresay, the mismatched reds would have been a similar case for me if those forks ended up on my NRS...ha!
It looks very long though...do you reckon youll go back to a shorter stem at any stage?
Axela8
10-09-2008, 08:34 PM
Was just thinking about that.
Probably will revert to the 70mm now the front sits at a better height.
And when I finally get the sag right at the rear with the new shock (and I'm not hanging off the back axle so much) I think it'll be a better match.
I have that stem in 70mm, 90mm and 100mm, plus another RF in 110mm and an Easton in 65mm, so I should find one that's right!
When I find out if I can get the replacement decal set, I'll get onto the paint job on the fork lowers.
I think matt black like the other Rebas will be best. That looked good.
Did you end up sorting out those bolts for the brakes?

Hey, mate - no.
I'll have to cut down a pair (have quite a few).

Seriously, I'll just hit up a bolt shop and get some hi strength M5 10mm bolts and do it properly.
Headset, shock and post should be here Monday or Tuesday. Then it'll be properly rideable.

forgive my stupifity, but you sig says Tazer FS, which I read as for sale, and leads to this thread.
Is the FS suffix part of the bike name, or are you in the process of converting this thread into a sale thread?
Sorry, im confused.

Yeah I see your point!
FS is in the model name.
Means 'full suspension' as they make an HT ('hard tail') too.
I'll edit it to clean up the confusion.

OK, new bits on:
King headset. Nothing more to say. The shit.

RockShox Monarch 4.2, runs up to 275PSI. Great! Need 260PSI!
Works perfectly well, and $200 less than an RP23 with adjustable compression lockout threshold (MotionControl)...
Fat shaft, too. Thicker than the Fox.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j43/Axela8/IMG_3319.jpg
Titec Post. Again, works as advertised.
Full extension in this shot makes the bike rideable over short distances, drops down for stupid quick cornering...
Also features a head that can accommodate the Tazer's seat angle, and a 3 year, no questions asked warranty.
Inner post (27.2) has a pin that aligns with a groove in the outer post to stop rotation. Neat.

Also, thanks to Justin's mate Jing, new 2nd hand bits coming in for the Taze...
Juicy 5s, CrossRide wheelset, X-9 shifter, PG990 cassette. Bargain on practically unused parts - thanks mate!

Haha redbird:cool: So after staring at the seatpost for a while...the purpose is you can get a longer extension than normal...due to your seattube being very small and otherwise the seatpost would interfere with the rear shock?
Its either that or your seatpost doubles for a light saber?

Correct about the seat post.
The lightsaber idea crossed my mind, but you really don't want to go sitting on one of those, as they're impossible to bolt a seat onto, so you just get the blade...

Yeah, it's old skool, but it's funny how many people I've talked to who think Intense never bettered their FSR bikes.

Not so much long as very low. It need the 170mm cranks, believe me!
I'm actually considering the 90mm stem again.
I had an 80 on the last one, and you need it to stop falling off the back!
Wider bars with a 2" rise are on the horizon, so that might fix it anyway.

I've decided to just get a few parts that 'fit'. Juicy 5s are a great brake. Had several sets before, and they just work.
Plus, it doesn't need adjustability, like the Trance benefits from, so I'm gonna keep it simple.
I thought about totally blinging it, but I found some good, tough 2nd hand parts (thanks Jing!) and they're perfect for this bike.
All the good stuff's going back on the Trance...
Action shots as soon as she's finished being built and I can get some!

Final bits on their way...
Full RaceFace Diabolus component set (cranks/BB/bars/stem/post), X-9 rear derailleur, PC991 chain, SDG Ti BelAir.
Decided this bike doesn't need X-0/Juicy Carbon lightness or adjustability, so X-9 and Juicy 5 brakes it is.
I'll eventually be respraying the forks to match the frame's red (and applying new 05 decals), and then it'll be finito.
Then I plan on smashing the living shit out of it with my 90 kilos of pure idiot power... :D

Hell yeah. But let's ride on Earth, rather than Jumanji...
Geeze I dunno man...
All the Raceface/SRAM gear is in/on except the cranks (that weigh about a kilo each arm!).
Will install them tonight and post pics of the final build!
Would have gone the RF Atlas over the Diabolus to be perfectly honest. Essentally the equivalent of the Hone.
What happened to the telescopic seat post?

Rebas + Diabolous?
Strange.

Hehehe... Knew someone would question that.
I needed a strong seatpost that could handle the seat tube angle (and a heat the could rotate far enough to compensate for the seatpost angle, too), and the Titec wasn't ringing my bells (see below).
Then I wanted a bar with the right width, rise and sweep.
And I wanted strong cranks.
That left a stem with the right rise and reach.
After all that consideration, online availability and the discounts I could get, all the parts that matched up were Diabolus.
Atlas was too much like Deus in degrees of sweep, bend and width, and only Diabolus met all the specs I was after.
Basically, I like my stuff (components) to match, so that was cool.
It's about 2kg heavier than the first build using all light weight XC parts/CrossMax SL wheels, but it's a shitload more solid.
Bonus is, these parts'll never break!
The Reba is surprisingly well suited to it all, being short travel (and it does save a little weight, not that that was my goal).
I just didn't want a thru axle, and wanted U-Turn Air... which left Revelation (too long, min 100mm travel) as the only option, or Fox (none available for a decent 2nd hand price).
So the Reba won.
Now, the Titec telescopic post: great idea on a bike with a normal seat angle.
I couldn't use the telescopic feature as the seatclamp was pinching the post too much to allow it up to slide easily up and down.
Sure, I could undo the seatclamp, but that's hardly the point... so it just became messy.
The design of the frame and this post don't actually work that well together (unfortunately) so it's a conventional post for me!

Me too. The forks look better on your bike than any of the 3 bikes I had them on... Besides, the amount of time and money and general farkin around that it'll take to get the forks resprayed just isn't worth it IMO.

Farkin' around for a respray I can do. I have no time to ride at the mo (long story) but enough time to put 1/2 an hour a day into a respray over a few days until it's done.
I need to pull them apart to change the MC damper, so the lowers will be off and the oil will be changed. Thought I might as well paint at the same time.
So I'm running 50/50 on the poll at the moment! Great!

OK. Going matt black.
Got the decals (all sets of all 08 Reba models) so it's gonna look mint!

After some weeks, and several poor results with products I was told would paint magnesium, I finally got the forks finished and re-decalled.

Looks better than the red.
It's semi-gloss, has a nice textured finish that mimics the shot peening on some other parts, and I'm well happy.
Switched to non-remote MC damper as well.
How it looks now:
