I reckon the bigfoot, i'm just more of a norco person that a kona person though, like said don't go for the jamis. Yes they can all climb, they are hardtails, in the end is weather the rider can pedal :p. The most wicked FR HT is a banshee morphine, you might find one on here in that price range, there used to be a few on here pretty cheap. Another suggestion is an STP with pikes or similar, so you cna bump the forks up to around 130mm for FR and down to 90mm for XC.

how about a sasquatch or manik, only down side is the weight, around 16kg i think. sasquatch is around 1400, manik about 1600.

nah the sassy is 1600 and the manik is 1800 or thereabouts. also my 06 sasquatch is a pretty heavy thing check it out in my sig just dunno about the frame or the parts is making it heavy? but it is still a ripping climber and can handle the roughest downhill/freeride.:D

+1

I got one when I first started riding, back then i didn't know much about bikes so i bought it cos it seemed good. Now it's a piece of sh!t. Suspension don't work, brakes fucked, bent the cranks within 4 hours of buying it (got new ones though). Slowly upgrading parts so as soon as i've got enough cash I'm getting new forks, brakes, frame, tyres and singlespeed.

Ime currently building a Brodie big shot, it currently weighs 14kg with the 2.5 kenda's (looks like 3).

I watched the old movie "statement" today and saw a guy dropping 30foot on his hardtail!

goes to show you don't need all the travel.

I will give you some picks when it is done in the holidays.

Kona 5-0, my brother has one and it rides pretty well. Not bad for uphill and he's taken it of some decent drops.

Originally marketed as a freeride-all-round frame, we decided to shift the Bitch into the jumping-all-round category, which is because that was the way the frame was actually used in most cases. The geometry of the Bitch seemed to be a little bit too radical for real freeride that would require riding to get to a spot, but was much loved by all guys who would use the frame for dirt jumping, hucking, occasional street riding.

So the 2008 Bitch fits in perfectly into the line up as an economic all round frame for extreme use.

Thats on the ns site. The guy two post above has no idea what hes talking about.

CroMo frame, SUPER strong for the abusive rider. The new 08 is available in black, blue or white weighing in at 2.8 kg this frame will be popular for jumping, street, park, all round cruising (and strong enough for a bit of DH and FR!).

Thats on tbsm.

I'm building up a Santa Cruz Jackal with some Marzocchi 06 66's (150mm travel) as a FR/DJ hardtail. Probably commute to work with it as well.

I don't think it'll be super light, but it should take whatever I can throw at it.

I figured the 150mm travel is more than good enough for most FR and hucking I do (got the fatass Faith for anything super massive) and it won't be too much for Dirt Jumping. I have done DJ on my 200mm travel 888's and it works, but it's not ideal, so 150mm seems like a good compromise...

Anyone else got a similar build setup they can comment on?

hi ive got an 07 kona stuff it rides great not to heavy strong frame and good quality parts i ride everything on my bike XC, a little DH and freeriding and its still rides awesome if you want a really good bike and you want to spend a little more i would get the 2008 Giant Reign X or the 2008 kona stinky or the stinky air (air suspension) i can garantee the kona wont break;) www.giantbikes.netwww.konaworld.com i hope you find the right bike and get out there and ride !
hope this helps.

kona 5-0. One of the best bikes you will buy and they have an awesome package.

iv got a norco rampage and love it.

marzocchi zf3's, and single cog on the front.

bike is fantastic for ht downhill and even works aight for street and dj's.
putting the seat up for xc works ok but in the end, it never going to be great lol.

i would also not recommend a jamis komodo. they are heavy, brittle and aren't all that cheap - and, also look like hell lol

If u want to buy a bike that actually looks nice get a norco bigfoot, sassy etc. But if u want the ugliest bike in the world get a Kona Five-0 with a seat tube roughly 50km long.

i'd go the norco sasquatch or bigfoot but i had a haro 8.3 escape and i did soo much chit on it and it still held up. 2 of the things i did were the 10ft drop at oxford falls and i hucked to an uphill landing off a public toilet block
so the old haro is also a good op lol

I reckon you should just get a manik, their bomb proof as heaps of people say, on the downhill parts of the course you can get tones of speed because their easy to controll, though they do weigh a bit.

if you were going to do more dj id suggest a norco rampage. my weighs 17.715 (weighed it at the bike shop asarvo) and its got some heavy components, they are in my opinion lots tougher then the manik and can handel a good thrashing. their rather heavy and probley wouldnt be ideal for xc.

Before i got my SC Bullit, i had an amazing hardcore hardtail, exactly what you're looking for. it was an 05 craftworks rail, and was pretty much the nicest hardtail i've ever ridden. it did downhill runs every weekend, got me to college cross country during the week, and i did a 6 hour enduro on it to. i got mine for $1000 second hand at the start of last year, with a nearly full custom build. weighs about 15kgs with mtxs, 8in hayes, old z1 forks. it would've been easy to build it lighter tho.
