Anyone able to keep us up to date with the weather down south. I had a look at the BOM site last night and it predicted isolated showers from wednesday on. Fingers crossed they are wrong

I agree, is the course muddy yet?
It looks like it will be by the weekend.
Anyone down in area able to scope it out and let us know?

I've got the wet lube and mud tyres at the ready... :)

looking out the window in Moruya, had sweet FA rain so far, overcast, light drizzle, just enough to moisten the track and bed it down. Might get a bit more out of this system, but my call is nothing of consequence, and looks like sun on sat to dry it out. Should all be good...Unless the EC low that is forming late in the week decides to hang around and track south...could be wet on sun then.

But at least there will b waves so bring your boards for a recovery surf on sun arvo (as if...) or monday.

Like your thinking but if i do the ride then surf then drive back to sydney i won't be able to move on monday. Keep the updates coming much appreciated

Im a bit further south (Narooma- about 60kms from Mogo) and its been pooring rain for the last hour here and doesnt look like stopping any time soon and chances are it's raining up there as well...
Id say bring your mud tyres but im sure Murrum or any other guys up a bit closer (if there is any) will be able to confirm that:)

Tim is on the money, and I am afraid my dreams of a career as a weatherman are fading fast. :o

Pouring rain on and off since 5ish. Its now 10 and seems to have backed off, but who knows whats in store.

Its only weds, but looks like a bit more rain. As long as the worst has past and its only showers and we get a bit of sun on fri and sat, then should be ok.

If its any consolation, the waves should be cooking on sat.

So how wet is it down there at the moment? Just checked the BOM and it looks like there is no rain, but how much rain at the moment have you had this week?

We'll be there rain or not, for me it's just a matter of being prepared for the mud. Mud tyres and wet lube make a muddy wet even rainy ride awesome (The Tumut 3hr last year (http://www.wickedrides.com.au/tumut/2007/) was wicked fun in the pouring rain), but ride on dry tyres and no lube or just dry lube and you're in for an unnecessarily rough day. So it's more about preparation that running screaming .... so far ;) haha

Im not worried about the rain i just want be prepared for it. My tyre collection consists of Larsons and crosmarks hardly the best mud tyres im just trying to work out whether i need to buy some tyres and some lube before i leave tommorow

Remember to take a snorkel. Many of the water crossings were deep enough to cover the hubs last year, and that was following a relatively dry week leading up to the race. With all this rain they should be considerably deeper.

Hmm, ive just put a ranchero on the back (fast rolling but gripy enough on the climbs) and an ignitor on the front. does anybody think this is a bad idea?

murrum
05-09-2008, 03:52 PM
^ dunno about your tyre choice. Myself, I rather grip, than roll knowing the tracks and the fact that its mainly up and down rather than powering along relatively flat fire trail.

Weather - just been driving all day up to Nowra and back. Showers on and off all day up there. Probably less wet here but still plenty of rain has come through. went for a quick spin this morning about 20min south of mogo and it was wet.
Right now its not raining on the coast, but the hills behind look like they are getting a bit it. (see photo of main st in Moruya).

The sun will be shining on sunday, so dont panic.

Top day out - thanks AROC. The mudfest speculation was unwarranted - a bit of splatter, a few short slippery sections; the rest of the course was hard and fast. That Mogo singletrack is great stuff - sinuous and smooth. The fire trails? They either go up or down - nothing flat. The weather turned out great too - not too hot, not too cold, little wind, plenty of sunshine.

As for me? Only walked a few sections - powering up the climbs. Not a contender though - broke a chain (cost me 10 to 15 minutes). Never mind - good training for the Scott.

Fantastic! Purrrfect riding conditions... some of the kinda damp loamy ST dragged a little, but so so worth it for tacky corners elsewhere and no dust anywhere!

Only the 50 for me - dissapointingly unfit - but I got up every climb, so a little victory there. Lots of nice new singletrack in a place I know pretty well - bodes well for the future.

Not a single complaint.

First enduro, great day and really well organised, thanks AROC. Stuck it out for the hundred, although was struggling at the 65k mark. Estimated 6 or so hours...how wrong I was!!!

Singletrack was great, pleny of stuff I hadnt seen before, which is saying something for someone that lives in the area. Looking forward to cheking it out in a more reasonable state.

Who was that bloke on the green SS avanti 29er who flew past me in the first 20ks - impressive.

Just want to say well done to CORC and all invloved in the event, it was a great day out. Definately the toughest 50 ks ive ever ridden, i was having nightmares about those hills last night, but the singletrail made it all the worthwhile.
id especially like to thank the marshell who helped me out when my chain decided to go on a journey behing my cassette. Your help was much appreciated.

CORC - Nah it was not CORC it was run by AROC sport. But yeah they did a great job and those feed zones were great. I had some cramps and one zones fixed me up pretty quick to nail the last 22 k's. It was a great event and really enjoyed it.

Full rigid Avanti KISS 29'er??.

First time i've raced the thing, wasn't too sure how hard to go out, but ended up 2nd with 6:08.

Rode straight off the second (smaller) bridge, and went over the handlebars twice on the back 50 :) Full rigid bikes are quite unforgiving, apparently!!!! :)

Yeah how much fun was that. Thanks AROC for a great course. I couldn't believe how good the state of the trails were considering the previous days rain - I was fearful of a mudfest. I chickened out and downgraded to the 50k event a few days before, which I kind of regret, but 50 is so much more fun than a gruelling 100, at least for me.

Is it true that the course harder/slower than the last year?

How much fun was that !!!

A big thanks to the guys and gals at AROC... a great event.

In a moment of weakness (and after a healthy amount of red wine) I had talked the wife into entering the 50km Irate Intern. Also using the long weekend away as a birthday pressie to me.
She doesn't ride a great deal and only started riding in the past 12 months, mainly due to my gentle nagging and also as a fun way of taking the dogs out on the abundance of trails around our house, but its definitely not a passion of hers.

She had been training hard, entering and finishing the Oaks Classic, and a few weekends at Wingello, ran the city to surf and spent a lot of time in the gym.
Come the weekend of the race she was feeling confident and actually looking forward to the ride.
A realistic goal was set.. a) To finish and b) Not to finish last.

We stayed at the back of the field for the entire ride and were pretty sure we were last after she lost the front end in a little muddy gully and went over the bars pretty badly early on.
We felt like we had the whole mountain to ourselves and just rode at a relaxing pace enjoying the trails.... any mud had now been buffed out to smooth tacky trail by the bikes in front.

We slowly started to reel in pass some of the back markers which was good for her confidence. We set off from the feed station with a pack of people behind us, the wife now pushing to make sure we didnt get overtaken.
Some swearing started creeping in around the 35km with the hills mentally taking their toll on the wife... but a determined "Im not giving up" attitude keeping her going.

The last 10kms was like a light at the end of the tunnel with the track being pretty cruisy from here on in. The wife sighting 2 more riders up ahead and aiming to pass them by the finish line. They swapped positions a few times over the last 5 kms until the other 2 riders could no longer keep up with her.

We finally rolled across the finish line in a time that we dont really care about, but what was important was the wife had achieved both her goals.

For me this ride was about sharing some sensationally good trails with my wife and seeing her achieve something, that for her, was probably the most physically and mentally challenging things she has done to date.

Am I a proud hubby? You bet.
Will I be riding this one by myself next year ? you bet !

AROC have put on another great event - I liked the way people hung around at the event hub this year and enjoyed rest of the day.

I liked the change to the start this year. With climbing and dirt sooner - and that first bit of single track was so much fun.

Harder than last year? I don't think it was - Rode a 26" SS at 34:17 in 2007 and did 2008 on 29" SS at 34:18 - which I guestimate are not much different in gearing. In fact I reckon I didn't walk as much in the 2nd 50kms as I did last year. Also finished 15mins quicker this year even though I feel I didn't get any where near as much pre-event riding in this time round.

A great day - plenty of time to talk with other riders on the track - everyone seemed to be having fun too.

Im in a similar boat. I do the highland fling and dirtworks with my wife but im keeping the Angry doctor to myself im even going as far as entering the 100 next year to make sure.
Problem is though she's a good rider if she trained she'd be an exceptional rider if she trained for MTB i don't think i could keep up with her
first xc race she did she won her division, so i have to keep up the training otherwise it will be her entering races and leaving me at home

Likely to be you - again, well done. I was following you up to and through Little Andrews at the top of ridge road for a fair bit (Morewood ST), lost you before we dropped down to that little bit of sealed road before the highway culvert. Bloke from Turramurra cycles was in front of you I think.

I think I went out too hard. First 50 in 3:08, next 50 took another 4:20 and was a bit emotional by the end. Definitely more training next time - sickness played havoc with the program.

Is it true that the course harder/slower than the last year?

I only rode the 50 this year but found it was definitely slower than 2007. I rode the 100km in 2007 and my first 50km time split (2:21) was just over 7 minutes faster than this year. I was expecting the opposite. :(

The fastest elite time for the first 50K was also significantly slower than last year.

Lanky Love
09-09-2008, 03:12 PM
Im pretty sure it was slower this year. fastest time for 2007 was 4:18, this year it was 4:40, and i felt it was slower, especialy the last 20 to 10km.

that was the only disapointment, last year at about the 10km mark there was that awsome track with all the berms that went on for ever, this year i think they used about 300m of it if anything at all.

I dont suppose anyone can produce a map of either of the two loops ?

This is the sort of location I'd be happy to spend a long weekend. If there was a local body who could do what they did in Forrest it would be sensational.

I know the guys at the Batemans Bay cycle shop have a map of the single tracks in the area. Also, if you log onto motionbased.com and do a search on "angry doctor" or "mogo", you'll find alot of downloaded GPS data which should give you a good idea of where the tracks are.

What an event, hats off to Aroc. The single track & some of the faster fire road descents left me begging for more. That said the finish line couldn't come soon enough, my first cramp came on at the 45km mark & didn't stop for the next 55kms, I had heaps of fluids (incl endura, gels & gu), ate plenty but just could not shake the cramps, open to suggestions on remedies (besides the obvious "teaspoon of cement & harden the fuck up" type solution).
Finished up at a little over 7.5hrs, was hoping for low 7's but had no idea really as it was my first race. Will definately be back for more next year (hopefully without 4hrs of leg cramps).

hey mate
i cramp regularly on rides over 3 hrs....for the last few races the cramps have been under control with Staminade, Hammer Endurolytes and salt n vinegar chips...the Angry Doctor had me cramping after 25 kms though, its the hills that do it to me...maybe its a fitness thing (???)

Hi Everyone,

I live in Batemans Bay and ride the tracks (not all at once!) a few times each week. Glad you enjoyed the Angry, had good weather, no major accidents and look forward to AROC organising again next year.

BUT

Why drop your rubbish as you ride (and I realise this applies to the minority)? I was out there this arvo in gorgeous bush with heaps of wildlife and stuff and there are all these little silver energy gel wrappers lying about. It's not cool! :( Surely you could chuck them in your pocket, stuff them in your sock, or whatever until you finish.

So please be mindful when riding (not just here but anywhere) that you take you rubbish with you. It looks like crap when it is just lying about everywhere.

Thanks and let the flaming begin:)

The amount rubbish on the course was one thing that annoyed me too. I felt that the number of gu packets and bar wrappers that we left behind was in extremely poor form (and I only saw the result of the 100 or so riders in front of me). It is not hard to put stuff back into where you got it from - and there were bins at the feed stations. Event organisers may find it increasingly difficult to convince land managers to provide access in the future if we can't be responsible and minimise our impact.

I thought the same thing as I occasionally came across plastic wrappers from the 50 or so riders in front of me...until I realised I'd accidentally done the same thing. At the 79km feed station I stashed a Red Bull for the next fire trail. When the track opened out I chugged it down, enjoying the last of it while launching, one-handed into singletrack scrub at 35+km/h. I managed to find my jersey pocket in time to avoid an undignified dismount. I realised a few kays later it had since fallen out.

I agree that there was a lot of crap left on the course. I know at least some of it was accidental, but things like Goo wrappers are usually fairly easy to keep hold of.

For events like this, where there are Sustagen poppers and cans of drink, maybe a bin placed, say, 500m down the track from the feed station would work for the large stuff. If it was signposted I'm sure people would use it. Even if they miss the bin, at least the rubbish would be in the one spot on the ground.

An idea for the immediate-term.....(it's easy saying this as i live in Sydney)...why don't some locals do a Sunday group ride with a plastic bag each?? It'd at least be done, and in about 8 hours what's more!!

I'm hearing you.

Mate it happens at all Aussie events- the dirt roadies care more about their times than the environment.

Selfish cunzors if you ask me. If you wippets and weekend olymipians keep your littering up you will not only stack bad time due to trail Karma- but you will also ruin it for everyone with track closures.

mr_h._simpson

Glad to hear others feel same way.

I'll get in touch with AROC about that idea of having bins 500m up the road from feed stations at next years event.

Thanks again and spread the word of littering equals bad trail karma!:)
