I can't eat anything containing gluten or sugar, so that means no gels/power bars for me. Honey is OK though, has anyone tried using that as a substitute?
Honey is about 80% carbohydrate according to the packet in front of me, so it should be good right?
I'm doing the Angry Dr on the weekend, so I'm thinking about going over to maccas and stealing a tray of those honey sachets they put out for the people who buy toast. ;)

That 80% carbohydrate is all sugar mate! Fructose + glucose. Is it a coeliac thing or something else?

Honey isn't sugar free But it is low G.I. It's an important distinction because it means the sugars are released slowly into the system. A critical issue if you are diabetic.
I'm guessing you have Coeliac disease or IBS? I would do an internet search and research as much about your particular problem as possible. Make sure the site is recognised and legitimate. You don't need misinformation.
Having said that, these guys might be able to help with Gluten free power bars etc

try a google search for "homemade energy gel" - you'll find heaps of forums from the multisport atheletes on different mixes.
Most have molassass (sp?) and barley malt sugar. Be sure to match the GI for the right kind of energy delivery.

Thanks guys, I have ulcerative colitis, which means no grains, sugar, or anything starchy. Makes carbo loading difficult. Honey is recommended though (its just bee poo..lol). I found these over at woolies and this same thread over on MTBR.

To paraphrase a well known tv add: Honeys ain't honeys.
They have variable GI values based on which flowers they come from.
---
Yellow Box, Stringybark, Red Gum, Iron Bark and Yapunyah honeys were considered to be of low GI. The commercial blend (1) and Salvation Jane honeys are of moderate GI and Commercial blend (2) was considered to be a high GI food.

But specifically in regard to UC, avoid refined sugars, and eat a big bowl of porridge with soy or rice milk as a carb source. Oats contain mucopolysaccharides (slimy goodness) which can soothe the GIT and especially ulcers.
Adding a teaspoon of slippery elm and some low fat yoghurt with Lactobacillus acidophilus will help a lot too. Yoghurt should be ok, since it is low in lactose, but if that is causing problems get some probiotic powder to sprinkle on your porridge.
Maybe consider getting some fish oils or linseed oil too (reduces inflammation). Ginger reduces inflammation too.
ok, I'll stop now - could end up getting way off topic. Private message me if you want any more info.
